Welcome to Miss Pritchard's Year 6 Blog!

Week commencing 21st July 2014

It has been an exciting but very emotional week in Year 6. On Monday and Tuesday Year 6 performed their production 'School Daze' to parents and friends and they were amazing! I am so proud of the class, they have worked really hard preparing for the performance- rehearsing the acting, singing, making backdrops, props, the programme and lots more. Well done Year 6, it was a fantastic show (in very hot conditions!)

On Wednesday Year 6 presented their leaver's assembly to the whole school and parents. We reflected on our memories of Grange Valley, PGL and read some poems about moving on. Mrs Holcroft presented each child with a scroll and recollection book. The children were really excited about their gifts from school and couldn't wait to start filling them with signatures!

It was a very emotional home time on Wednesday. The class were sad to be leaving their friends and school, but excited to start their new High Schools.

It has been a pleasure to teach the class this year and see them progress and grow in confidence. We have made some fantastic memories and I thank Year 6 for an amazing year at Grange Valley. I wish you all the very best of luck and success in High School, I will be thinking about you in September.

Please come back and visit!

Thank you to all parents for your support this year.

Have a lovely summer break.

Miss Pritchard.

Week commencing 14th July 2014

We have had some action packed days recently in Year 6 and I am so proud of the class! Their behaviour has been impeccable on our recent outings to celebrate the end of the year. They have been a credit to the school.

Last week we visited the PGL centre- Boreatton Park and enjoyed lots of activities that included: giant swing, challenge course, archery, zip wire, abseiling, survivor and raft building. All children challenged themselves to complete activities that they found daunting at first- the class encouraged each other and celebrated their class mate's achievements- each child grew in confidence and it was lovely to see them work as a team. It was a fantastic trip that I am sure they will remember for a lifetime! Caitlin said 'This is so much fun, I don't want to go home!'

We began this week with our trip to Alton Towers, we arrived bright and early in school to make the journey to the theme park. Again all children were fantastic ambassadors for Grange Valley and had so much fun enjoying the rides for their final trip as a class. It was a day full of laughter and I have never seen smiles so big on some of the children's faces. Dylan said 'This is the best day ever!' The class agreed that this has been one of our favourite days together. We were even joined by some feathered friends at lunch- Lewis nearly lost his sandwiches!!

Well done Year 6 and thanks for an amazing end to a brilliant year!

We are now looking forward to performing our production and leaver's assembly next week, I hope you can join us.

If you would still like to purchase any tickets then please send your slip and money into school as soon as possible. Please also return your report slips into school to confirm that you have read your child's report.

Thank you

Year 6 had a fantastic oppportunity this week, as they were trained to perform CPR and use a defibrillator! Grange Valley has purchased a defibrillator after lots of fundraising by children and parents. The class were excellent at listening to instructions and following the correct procedure to ensure a person's safety. Year 6 were really impressed with the defibrillator and thought it was a very clever piece of technology and think we are very lucky to have one in school. We also met 'Boots' the Saints mascot and Kate Cross the women's England cricketer. What a fantastic week in school!

We hope to see you at the summer fair tomorrow, there will be lots of exciting events and stalls on offer (despite the weather!) so it will be lovely to see you there!

I hope the weather improves for PGL next week!

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard

Week commencing 23rd June 2014

We enjoyed lots of sporting activites this week for 'National Sports Week.' We improved our tennis skills earlier in the week to celebrate the start of Wimbledon and enjoyed competing in this year's fantastic Sports Day! We were all really proud of Lewis who won the long distance race in style!

At the end of the week Year 6 took part in a Childline workshop. The class discussed the reasons why a child may need to contact childline and how we can look after ourselves and our friends. We had a class photo taken with Childline's mascot 'Buddy'

Have a great weekend!

Miss Pritchard

Week commencing 16th June 2014

This week I was really proud of our Year 6 girls when they decided to make loom bands to sell in school to raise money for our trip to Alton Towers. The sale was so successful that we have decided to make and sell some at the Summer Fayre to raise money for school funds. Well done girls!

We enjoyed the sunshine on the field on Friday afternoon and practised some of our races for sports day. We can't wait and hope the weather stays nice for Wednesday 25th June. Hope you can join us!

Please ensure your child has their coloured PE top and pumps in school next week.

Your child has brought home a costume list for our end of year production. If you can help us by providing any of the items needed for your child's character we would be extremely grateful.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard.

This week Year 6 are excited about the start of the World Cup! We used this as a great opportunity to improve our map reading skills. I set the class a challenge- to locate on a world map and globe, all 32 countries competing in the World Cup! The class worked really hard in their groups to locate all of these countries and enjoyed discussing the locations we had visited. We also discovered lots of information about Brazil, the host country.

We also made the most of the good weather at the end of the week and started to sell ice pops to the rest of the school to fund raise for our trip to Alton Towers.

Have a great weekend. Come on England!

Miss Pritchard

Lights, Camera, Action!.............

This week our attention has turned to our production. The class are excited about rehearsing and preparing for their end of year performance and were extremely professional when we held auditions for the cast! They had obviously taken this very seriously and prepared for their audition thoroughly. We had some very confident performances, I can't wait to get started! Children now know the part they will play in the performance and will bring home the script over the half term holiday so they can get started on learning their lines!

Some of our Year 6 children joined Year 5 on a fantastic trip to Lords cricket ground in London on Tuesday and I was lucky enough to go with them along with Miss Prescott, Mrs Threlkeld, Miss Sheffield and Chris our cricket coach. It was an amazing experience, one I know the children will never forget! We had a chance to play cricket on the main outfield at Lords, we had a tour of the ground, decorated cakes with the ground's amazing chef and met some of the women and men's England cricket team! It certainly has been a hot topic of conversation in the class! All of the children were fantastic ambassadors for Grange Valley receiving many compliments for their impeccable behaviour and smart Grange Valley sports kit! Well done Fay, Molly, Shannon, Allana, Ajay, Harrison, Nathan, Connor and Harry P! We have some very talented cricket players at our school, Harry even caught out one of the women's England cricket team- well done Harry! If you haven't already watched the video on Mrs Holcroft's blog then have a look, there are some fantastic shots of our very talented children in the background!

We have also been busy skipping this week in order to raise awareness for 'Healthy Heart Week'

Your child will have brought home a letter this week with the date for the PGL meeting on Thursday 5th June at 3.30pm in the Year 6 classroom.

A letter has also been sent home with some information about our end of year trip to Alton Towers. Please return the slip and payment no later than Thursday 5th June.

Thank you.

Have a fantastic half term holiday and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday 4th June.

Miss Pritchard

Week commencing 12th May 2014

Wow! What a 'testing' week it has been! I could not be prouder of Year 6 this week! They have been amazing and should be extremely proud of themselves.

It was great to see the children in school bright and early each morning, enjoying toast and cereal in the hall in preparation for their SATs tests. We began on Monday with a few nerves, but these soon turned to confidence as the week progressed.

I am extremely proud of how the children prepared themselves in class, how they tackled the tests and how they conducted themselves in such a mature manner all week. They really did apply 100% effort to each and every assessment throughout the week and thorougly deserved their treat on Friday.

As soon as time was up on our last writing assessment we had a celebration in class to some music (with some very relieved children and staff! This soon turned to a conga around the playground!)

Then the ice cream van visited the children on the playground! We were joined by Mrs Holcroft and Mrs Threlkeld and the rest of the staff who supported children through their SATs assessments.

Have a fantastic weekend Year 6, you have all been incredible! See you Monday!

I am extremely proud of Year 6, they have worked so hard throughout the whole of this year and have maintained their efforts and determination each and every week. They are ready and prepared for the week ahead and should be proud of their achievements so far and be excited to show off how fantastic I know they all are! All that is left to do is to ensure that they relax, have a good nights sleep and carry out our class motto: "Just do the best that you can do!"

We have also enjoyed some rounders on the field earlier in the week (when the weather was much nicer!) and enjoyed some art and craft activities in the afternoons. Mrs Holcroft will be joining us on Friday for some hot chocolate and biscuits. This will provide your child with an opportunity to ask any last minute questions in a relaxed informal environment.

Week commencing 31st March 2014

It has been a lovely end to a busy half term this week, we visited Christ Church on Monday for an Easter experience that the children thoroughly enjoyed. We were also treated to a fantastic musical assembly by some very talented children in Key Stage Two. We were very proud of Jessica and Madison who played a solo during the performance and were both amazing- well done girls!

The holidays have been eagerly anticipated in Year 6 after all our revision, practice papers and booster groups! All children are certainly looking foward to a rest! I am really proud of all the children in the class who have attended the booster sessions each week and given 100% effort-well done to you all! These sessions will continue for the first two weeks back after the holidays. The last booster session will be on Wednesday 30th April. SATs week begins on Monday 12th May. I have set some maths and reading homework for over the Easter break and I will send home your child's log in details for Education City on Friday. The mental maths and quick tests are excellent revsion and will really help to ensure your child is fully prepared for the mathematics tests. On Education City your child can access a 'my revision' section. This section saves games that will be useful for your child to play to revise areas that they have struggled with.

Have a lovely Easter break and thank you for your continued support.

We look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 22nd April.

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 24th March 2014

It has been another busy week in Year 6 and we have managed to cram in lots of different activities! We began the week by completing a maths treasure hunt that included lots of problem solving! The children worked really hard in their teams to solve lots of mathematical problems that led them on a trail around school and eventually to some treasure! We have also been concentrating on our times tables this week. We have been chanting our tables at every opportunity throughout the day using our counting stick (we may be saying them in our sleep soon!) and then completed a game in pairs based on the times tables facts that we have been learning. Why not ask your child to chant the 8 times table to encourage them to practise this as often as possible! We will be moving on to a new times table each week. We also completed some algebra problems in class and worked as a team to solve problems based on algebra. In Literacy, we have been learning about noun phrases and different types of nouns in our grammar lessons and we have completed an information leaflet about our upcoming trip to PGL, that we are all very excited about! In our science lessons, we have been completing an experiment to measure shadows at different times of the day and revised the reason why a shadow is longer at the beginning and end of the day and shortest at lunchtime because of the position of the sun in the sky. Harry P also noticed that this also changes the direction of our shadow, well done Harry!

We had lots of fun creating some motivational posters for our SATs week in ICT based on the 'keep calm' posters. These included Keep calm and try your best! to Keep calm and check your answers! We are going to use these for a class display to inspire us in the coming weeks! Why not pop in and have a look next time you are in school.

Our sewing is also coming along nicely.......................

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 17th March 2014

This week Year 6 took part in a class debate. We watched a video of a debate in the Houses of Parliament and discussed the different features. We chose our speaker and 2 proposers for and against the motion. Children had the opportunity to plan their ideas and think of some really good points that they they could make throughout the debate. We recorded the debate and watched it back later in the week. We were very impressed with how some of the children in the class were very confident and made some very persuasive points! We decided that the debate didn't get quite as heated as we would have liked! So we have decided to revisit this topic in the coming weeks, now we have had the opportunity to practise the conventions of a debate, we are looking forward to arguing a different motion that the class plan to choose. A great effort year 6, well done!

We have also enjoyed some relaxation time in the afternoons as a well deserved break from our hard work during our weekly practise assessments and booster groups. Year 6 have really enjoyed sewing! We were very excited to receive some new sewing material this week and have really enjoyed spending some nice afternoons sewing some designs on to a binca bookmark (I was also very busy re-threading needles!!!) We will hopefully sell these in school to raise money for our end of year trip.

On Friday we are looking forward to Sport Relief. We will be completing some team games and Sport Relief activities throughout the day.

Easter is also approaching fast! The very popular Easter Egg Competition is back! All children are invited to design and decorate a boiled egg ready to bring in to school and present in the hall on Friday 4th April. There will be prizes for the best eggs, judged by an impartial panel! Children and staff love this very popular event. I can't wait to see the entries this year!

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson

Week commencing 10th March 2014

This week we were treated to a show by 'Captain Grammaticus!' This was an entertaining performance that included lots of important facts involving spelling, punctuation and grammar. In Year 6, we are working really hard to improve the levels of our writing and are constantly looking for ways to ensure we show off the fantastic work we are capable of. This was excellent revision for facts including types of verbs, adverbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns and much more.... Why not ask your child if they can explain what each of these mean and see if they can give you an example?

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 3rd March 2014

This week Year 6 had a practice SATs week. The class sat a reading, maths, mental maths and spelling, grammar and punctuation test to fully prepare them for real thing later in May. Children had the opportunity to see the rooms where they will sit their papers , they are now experts and realise that they have nothing to worry about as they are all fab! The whole class are working so hard and it was great to see how determined every child was to show us what they are capable of!

After all that hard work, Year 6 really enjoyed taking part in their PE sessions this week with our cricket and saints coaches. We have also completed some 'graffiti art work' to support our literacy topic. Children will be taking part in a class debate next week to discuss this issue and argue the reasons for and against this hot topic ready to write a balanced argument.

The highlight of the week of course was 'World Book Day!' Children came to school dressed as their favourite fairy tale character. We completed some activities linked to World Book Day in class and also had the opportunity to take part in some tree planting to develop the wooded areas around our school. There were some fantastic costumes on display on Friday with lots of children really getting into the spirit of this event. Please encourage your child to read books of their choice as much as possible at home as it is amazing the difference it can make to their learning.

I look forward to meeting with you again at parents evening next week on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th March. Your child will bring home your appointment time on a letter on Friday. See you then!

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

These begin next week on Monday 3rd March. Thank you to all parents who have returned your child's permission slip.

Reading booster will take place each Monday and Maths will take place every Wednesday, after school.

There was lots of excitement after we had finished our Maths tests on Thursday when Ajay spotted a huge bird in the trees across the car park! We went outside to take a closer look (we think it may have been a hawk, it flew away too quickly to catch it on camera, but it was impressive!)

Reminder: Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school everyday. Some children are missing out on valuable time at the beginning of our PE lessons sorting a PE kit to wear for our lessons. Thank you.

This week in Year 6 we have ended the week with a class party in Reward Time to celebrate the children's hard work this half term! We also had a fantastic time at the disco on Tuesday night. Year 6 are really looking forward to the half term break and deserve a rest before the hard work begins again after the holiday! We are only 9 teaching weeks away from SATs! (12th May).

Your child should have brought home a letter regarding the booster groups that start the week beginning the 3rd March. Please ensure your child's slip is returned to school as soon as possible. These groups will be a fantastic opportunity for your child to work on their targets in a small group and can have a huge impact on your child's attainment.

I have sent some reading and maths homework home with your child to complete over the holiday. Please can this be returned on Monday 24th February.

Have a lovely half term break.

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 3rd February 2014

This week Year 6 have been busy learning about personification in sentences. We discussed how to write these sentences and the effect they can have in a piece of writing. We ended the week with a writing assessment to show off all the sentences types and other important writing 'ingredients' that are needed to achieve high levels. We will complete a spelling, grammar and punctuation assessment on Friday to assess our learning in this area so far. In Maths we have been revising converting units of length, weight and capacity. We have also looked at changing an improper fraction to a mixed number and vice versa and continued our weekly times table and mental maths challenges.

In Science we completed a forces experiment. We measured some objects in Newtons using a forcemeter. After this we predicted how our measurements might change when we measured these objects again in water and discussed water resistance.

On Monday, Mrs Holcroft's assembly was all about kindness. We watched a really powerful video that showed how kindness will come back to those who are kind to others. Back in class this week in our SEAL lesson, I gave the class some scenarios that they might face in the classroom and on the playground and we discussed the right thing to do and how we can show acts of kindness. We are looking forward to finding out who has received the bronze, silver and gold awards in Friday's assembly.

Have a great weekend.

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 27th January 2014

This week was 'National Storytelling Week' we started the week by reading a German story called 'The Musicians of Bremen.' We identified the audience and purpose of this story and decided that the story was written for a younger audience. We decided to write our own stories for younger children in Year 1. We visited Year 1 on Tuesday morning (clipboards in hand!) ready to find out what kinds of stories the children in Year 1 like to read, the characters they like to have in their books, settings and ideas for the plot! We returned to class with all the information we had gathered ready to write some exciting stories...Year 1 were amazing and gave us lots of ideas and requests to work from. Year 6 are busy this week writing as they have promised Year 1 they will come back to their class on Thursday morning to read the story to them. Harry P is busy writing an 'Underwater Adventure' Harrison is writing a fantastic story set in the rainforest, Fay's story is about a giraffe's exciting escape from the zoo and much, much more!

Wednesday night was a lovely day in school as the children were really excited about returning later in the evening for the 'Bedtime Story Event.' Children returned in their pyjamas to enjoy a lovely story read by Mrs Threlkeld in the hall and then returned to class for hot chocolate and further stories by candlelight.

In Maths we have been learning about probability, rating how likely events are to happen on a probability scale. We also looked at ratio and proportion later in the week and used our knowledge to answer some SATs style questions. We are looking forward to continuing our weekly mental maths challenge against Year 5 (who are fierce competition!) later in the week to try and achieve the most top scores in a mental maths test, come on Year 6!

Year 6 are currently working really hard to fundraise for their end of year treat to Alton Towers. The class decided that it would be a good idea to have a book sale as it has been National Storytelling Week and they are keen to encourage other children in school to read as much as possible. If you have any old children's book that you no longer need and you would be happy for Year 6 to sell them, then please send them in to class with your child. We would be extremely grateful!

Photos of this week will follow.

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 20th January 2014

In Year 6 this week, we looked at high level punctuation in our grammar lesson. We looked at the correct uses for a semi-colon and colon and used them effectively in some sentences. We then challenged ourselves to use this punctuation in our writing this week. We began the week by playing the 'rock, paper and scissors catching game in PE. We then completed some instructions about how to play this game in our writing lessons using imperative verbs, adverbs, time connectives, colons and semi- colons. We then redrafted our instructions after some feedback from our writing partner to produce our final draft.

In Maths, we have concentrated on the properties of some 2D and 3D shapes, discussing parallel sides, perpendicular edges and faces. We have been practising mental maths and have really improved our scores! We finished the week by discussing how to read scales accurately. On Friday we completed a maths investigation ready for next week when we will look at probability. The children recorded the amount of times a head or a tail is thrown when a coin is tossed 30 times and the amount of times a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 is thrown on a dice.We will investigate probability in more detail next week. We also played the remainders game to practise our devision skills and a loop game to convert measurements from centimetres into metres and vice versa. Phew!! A busy week.

Next week is 'National Storytelling Week.' The class are looking forward to reading lots of stories from around the world and writing their own stories aimed at a younger audience. We will be writing our own stories and reading them to Year 1 at the end of next week.

Reminder: Children can return to school on Wednesday 29th January from 6.00pm to 7.00pm for a 'Bedtime Story Evening'. Children will listen to and read a variety of stories and enjoy a hot chocolate (all dressed in their pyjamas!) Please ensure your child has returned their reply slip if they would like to attend. It will be a lovely evening!

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Pritchard, Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson.

Week commencing 13th January 2014

This week in Literacy we have been reading Anne Frank's Diary. We started by answering some challenging reading comprehension questions on Anne Frank and then we located some contractions and subordinate clauses in her diary entries. We have also completed a character description on Anne Frank, the class came up with some fantastic words and phrases to describe her. In Maths, we have been concentrating on Data Handling. We have revised our knowledge of frequency tables and constructed bar charts and line graphs. Year 6 were asked to read and interpret some challenging bar charts, line graphs and pie charts and calculate the range, median, mode and range of data.

We have been thinking about our school mission statement 'Guide, Challenge, Achieve' in our SEAL lesson this week ready for a new display in our corridor. We discussed how we are guided and challenged at school and achievements that we have made so far since September. We have designed some leaves that include some of our ideas that we will place on our class tree outside class and we are excited to add some to the fantastic tree in the school entrance!

Year 6 are really excited about being positive role models when they visit Reception class on Friday for reward time. Children will be paired up with some reception children and enjoy the last hour of the school week playing games, reading, playing in the reception outdoor area and generally having fun in Reception class- (always popular even though they don't like to openly admit it! :-) )

Have a great weekend.

Week commencing 6th January 2014

Happy New Year! We hope you had a fantastic Christmas. We have really enjoyed hearing all the children's stories about their Christmas holiday, they have obviously had a well deserved rest as they have returned to school this week eager and determined to work hard!

This week we welcomed a new member of staff to our class.

Mr Robinson is a new Teaching Assistant who will work with children across Key Stage 2. Mr Robinson will work with children in Year 6 each morning during the week. The class made him feel really welcome. Lewis said 'He is really nice, I like working with him.'

We have completed some work in Maths this week on time and calculating the inverse. We have revised the important methods for calculations and solved some word problems involving money. We have worked really hard to achieve our writing targets this week by ensuring we have a clear opening, ending and paragraphs that are linked and flow effectively. We have written a recount about the Christmas holiday and completed a non-chronological report including good subheadings and subordinating connectives! (Why not ask your child if they can give you an example of a subordinating connective!) I was also amazed this week at how accurate the class have become at levelling pieces of writing. Each week your child is asked to level a piece of their own writing to assess the level they feel they have achieved and identify their progress in writing and areas for improvement. This week the children were given a piece of writing they hadn't seen before and were asked to highlight an assessment sheet to identify it's level. The class were spot on and could identify very easily why the writing was successful and identify suitable targets for this child to make progress. Well done Year 6!

It has been fantastic to see so many children attending the RM Maths club in the morning. However, some children are arriving later than 8.30am and therefore do not have enough time to complete the programme and achieve a score before the morning register. Please ensure your child arrives at 8.30am if they attend this club. Thank you.

Next week your child will bring home a new workbook for Maths homework. They will be asked to complete some pages from this book each week and return it to school on Friday.

Have a great weekend!

We have had a fantastic end to the term so far this week! Thank you so much to all parents who contributed food for the party on Tuesday, the class had a fantastic time and couldn't believe how lucky they were to have such brilliant party food, they were very full! We have saved some cakes and treats for our last day on Thursday to enjoy watching a Christmas film. Thank you again! The excitement is building for our 'X Factor Talent Show' on Wednesday- the children are really eager to show off their many talents. Hopefully see you there!

We hope you have a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for all your support in 2013, we look forward to welcoming the class back after a well earned rest on Tuesday 7th January 2014- (Wow! Where is the time going!?)
