                                      Thursday 13th July 6pm

End of year trip to LA Bowl- Please return permission slips ASAP

Another hectic week in Year 6! Firstly, can I say a huge thank you for your efforts with the children's costumes for our performance of The Lion King - judging the competition will certainly be a difficult job! We were all very excited to try them on for our friends during our dress rehearsal! Tickets will remain on sale next week but hurry! evening tickets are selling out fast!

On Tuesday, Year 6 enjoyed their transition day at Haydock High School. It was lovely to hear how excited they are for their move up to high school and how they have already made lots of new friends ready for September.

We ended our week with a lovely outdoor session of cricket with our coach, Chris! Our skills have improved so much over the past few weeks.

Today children have brought their end of year report home which includes their SATs results. All children have done incredibly well and I am so proud of how much progress they have made during the year. If you have any questions regarding your child's report please call in to school and arrange an appointment.

Have a lovely weekend!

The Lion King Performances: Wednesday 12th July 9.30am

                                      Thursday 13th July 6pm

We started the week putting our co-ordination and rhythm to the test with our dance teacher, Emma. We worked in small groups to choreograph routines for our production. We had lots of fun! I was so impressed with the effort Year 6 have put in to remembering their lines! Well done children! We managed to have our first run through without scripts this week and the show is now starting to take shape. Next week we will be using our creative side - designing and creating our programme, tickets, back drops and props! Can I please ask that children's costumes are brought into school no later than Friday 7th July as we still need to have a full dress rehearsal before the 'big night'! I can't wait to see them all. I'm sure it'll be very tricky to judge the competition!!

Have a lovely weekend!

The Lion King Performances: Wednesday 12th July 9.30am

                                 Thursday 13th July 6pm

This week we have had many opportunities to show off our creative talents. We have enjoyed creating a class sculpture of Elma the Elephant for the Art expedition, which will be held at the Town Hall. Children have used a variety of recycled materials to create a structure to Paper Mache. This week we also celebrated Culture Week in school, in Year 6 we chose to celebrate China. The children made Chinese lanterns, dragons and even experimented with prawn crackers! During our English lessons, we spent a lot of time comparing the differences between our school and schools in China. Year 6 were shocked at some of the differences! Did you know after school clubs in China are compulsory?

This week we have also been very busy rehearsing for our end of year production. Letters have been sent home this week, informing you of the part your child will play. Please can you dedicate some time at home to help children to learn their lines. Next week we are hoping to be able to practise without our scripts!

Have a lovely weekend!

Kingswood: 14th June - 16th June - Please complete the medical forms and return to school ASAP

This week 'Goldilocks' found herself in the middle of an attack from our Year 6 press team! We received reports of a break-in to our favourite family of bears cottage! The Year 6 police force set to work investigating this matter: interviewing many woodland- creatures. Thankfully, due to our amazing newspaper reports, the local community were made aware of this issue and 'Goldilocks' is no longer at large!!

During our Computing lessons with Mr Robinson, we learned how to order and present data using Microsoft Excel. We had lots of fun interpreting data from our graphs in our Maths lessons.

We have made a final decision on this years end of year production. Year 6 will be performing ' The Lion King'. Children have been given their part and a copy of the script. Over the holidays, please can you find a little bit of time to read through the script with your child and practise their lines.

Have a lovely half term!

Well done Year 6! I am really proud of you! This week has been a challenge but you have shown real determination and perseverance, attempting each day with a positive attitude, ensuring the tricky tests where completed to the best of your ability. Today we celebrated the end of a very tough week with a toy day, ice cream and a party!

We have some very tired children (and staff!!) so make sure you have a lovely, restful weekend!

Friday 12th May - After SATs Party- Please can children bring an item of party food in to school on Friday.

We have had a week jam packed full of fun revision activities, from treasure hunts to becoming graffiti artists. Have a look at the pictures below! We are very prepared for next week and are confident we will rise to the challenge and show off our full potential!

W/B 24th April 2017

Reminders: SATs - 8th May - Children are invited to join staff for breakfast from 8am.

This week we have been very busy revising for our tricky tests. In our maths lessons, we have been looking at the properties of 3D & 2D shapes. I was super impressed with the children's use of mathematical vocabulary to teach each other about the different shapes and how they applied their knowledge of angles, to further discuss their properties.

During our English lessons, we took on the role of a SATS marker and put our SPAG skills to the test, to correct somebody's very silly mistakes. This week we enjoyed spending some time with Mrs Lyon and Mr Robinson, practising the use of the active and passive voice. We are now experts at identifying the subject, verb and object within sentences.  Next week, we will continue with our revision and make final preparations for the tests the following week. It was lovely to see you all at the parent meeting, remember there are lots of resources which can help at home but most importantly reassure the children that they are amazing and just need to continue trying their very best!

Have a lovely weekend!

SATs Parent Meeting - Thursday 27th April - 3.30pm in Y6 classroom

SATs - W/b 8th May

Welcome back! We have hit the ground running this week in Year 6, ready for our final push before SATs. In our Maths lessons we have been learning all about angles. We began the week by helping Mr Robinson improve his high score on his favourite game - Angry Birds. We investigated which angle each bird flew best at to reach its optimum level of impact. We worked in small groups to learn how to measure the angles accurately using a protractor.

We then moved on to learn how to use our rulers and protractors to draw angles accurately. This was very tricky! When we became more confident, we used our skills to practise constructing triangles. We learnt all about the different types of triangles and their properties. We ended our week with an 'Angly' Birds quiz, I was super impressed with how Year 6 attempted the tricky SATs problems and could use and apply their knowledge of angles and triangles to arrive at the correct answers!

During our English sessions we have continued to revise for our SPaG and Reading assessments. This week we have been revising the different verb forms. Together we constructed a tense grid to help us with our revision. Why not ask your child to explain the difference between the simple, perfect and progressive forms of the verb?

Next week we are going to be taking on the role of a SATs marker, to see if we can identify mistakes in a test paper and explain to the person where they went wrong.

Have a lovely weekend!

W/B 20th March 2017

Reminders: Tuesday 28th March - Christ Church - Please return slips by Monday

We have had a wonderful week in Year 6 this week. We have continued with our work all about Ratio in our Maths sessions. Year 6 have continued to impress me with their knowledge and how well they are applying their skills to solve tricky worded problems. Next week we will be putting our ratio skills to the test to see if we can make some yummy Easter treats!

During our English lessons, we have been learning all about non-chronological reports. We have had great fun creating our own creatures to write about. Some of my favourites were: The Gittercorn, Trico and Unihorn. We tried really hard to plan our writing using a variety of technical vocabulary and the passive voice.

We have taken advantage of some of the nicer weather this week, we really enjoyed our PE lesson with Mrs Fowler!

Today we have had a lovely day talking about the importance of Comic Relief. We had lots of fun telling jokes. Well done to Molly and Ruby who were our class winners!

Next week we will be having a practice SATs week. I can't wait to see how much our scores have improved!

Have a lovely weekend!

It was lovely to see you all at Parents Evening this week to share with you the progress your children are making! I am very proud of them all. We have really enjoyed our reading sessions this week, trying hard to improve our PEEP skills. We had lots of fun reading the books from the Book Fair with our reading buddy, creating tricky two and three mark questions for our peers to answer!

Have a lovely weekend!

W/B 6th March 2017

Reminders: Parents Evening - Tuesday and Thursday

Booster Groups - Monday and Wednesday

Book Fair - After school, every day until 4.30pm

We've had another busy week in Year 6! Countdown is now on to our important tests. During our sessions this week, we have been discussing our personal targets and what we need to do to achieve them. These will be shared with you at Parents Evening next week.

This week in English, we have been writing in role as Shrek. We had great fun thinking of some humorous activities that 'we' could have been up to in 'our' swamps. We worked in pairs to create our own checklist of criteria to try and achieve expected standard in our writing. Mrs Holcroft came to visit on Wednesday afternoon whilst we were redrafting some of our sentences: she really enjoyed reading our work. Our diaries really made her laugh!

In Maths, we have began a new chapter - Percentages. We learnt how percent means out of a hundred. We used the bar model to show 100%, 50%, 25% and 10%. We used this pictorial representation to compare the percentages to equivalent fractions. Using our knowledge of dividing by 10 and doubling and halving, we could find tricky percentages of numbers. We will continue with this next week!

We had a lovely afternoon with Mrs Fowler on Tuesday. We continued to practise our batting and catching skills. Next week we are going to put our refined skills to the test and hold our very own tennis tournament.

Have a lovely weekend!

 W/B 27th February 2017

We have had lots of fun celebrating World Book Day. Thank you for your efforts with the children's costumes. We really enjoyed reading Giraffes Can't Dance. We discussed the characters thoughts and feelings and which characters we are similar to. Mrs Holcroft really enjoyed listening to our stories and diary entries in role as Gerald and couldn't believe the progress we have made with our writing! Unfortunately, we wasn't able to visit the library this afternoon, due to the weather. Instead, we had great fun creating our own illustrations for our book. Hopefully we will be able to rearrange the visit very soon!

Friday 3rd February - Year 6 will be visiting Haydock Library - 1.30 - 3.00pm

We have had a very busy week in Year 6! This week in maths we have been focusing upon measurement.  We set to work looking at what we already knew and what we needed to know by the end of the week. We began by estimating the length, capacity and mass of different everyday objects before moving on to accurately measuring the items. We discussed how different weighing scales, jugs and other equipment can have different scales and it is good practice during our tests to write on the different divisions to help up to work out our answers. Together we discussed how we can use our mental and written methods to help us.

It has been very tricky, trying to remember all of the conversion facts. Mrs Lyon has been working very hard with us during the afternoon to give us some extra practise!

Together we made a handy hints book which we can use to help us to revise. Please practise this at home with your child as much as possible. Useful questions could be: How many ml in a L? If a jug hold 335ml, how many more ml are needed to fill the jug if it hold 1.3L? Similar questions can also be used for mass and length.

This week during our English sessions we have enjoyed writing our very own spooky stories, trying hard to build suspense and tension. We 'slowed' our writing down this week to make sure we were thinking carefully about the effectiveness of each sentence. During our reading sessions, with Mrs Abbott, we have been looking at the story, 'The Street Child. We have been focusing upon word meaning and skills to help us to summarise the text. We will continue to read this text over the next few weeks.

During our Art session we looked at an American artist called Frida Kahlo, who was famous for painting self -portraits. Year 6 had great fun Friday afternoon creating their own self portrait (with a twist!) We will continue with them next week and hopefully have them displayed in our classroom for you to come and look at.

Have a lovely weekend!

W/B 30th January 2017

Reminders: Wednesday 8th February - Valentines Disco - 3.30 -5pm

It was lovely to return back to school to see so many smiley faces and hear the children's thoughtful comments. We have had a lovely week together and I am so impressed with the rapid progress the children are making within all areas of their learning. This week in English we have continued to read a selection of books Mrs Holcroft chose for us, all about the importance of recycling and caring for our environment. On Thursday morning we put our speaking and listening skills to the test and turned our classroom in to the Houses of Parliament and held our very own debate - 'Should not recycling be a criminal offence?' I was so impressed with how all of Year 6 presented their arguments and respected each others points of view.

Magic filled the air on Friday morning when we took flight on our broomsticks - only to find out they were broken and causing all kinds of mischief! Year 6 enjoyed watching a short video clip of Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom taking their first flying lesson, we then worked in small groups to share our humorous ideas of what could happen if we took flight on a defaulted broomstick! Year 6 showed off their great understanding of our year group expectations when discussing the WAGOLL and could also magpie words and phrases to use in their own letter of complaint. Very soon these will be displayed in our classroom. Please feel free to come in and have a read!

We have continued with our focussed booster groups during the afternoon and I am so pleased with the how the children are approaching each session with enthusiasm and gaining in confidence each week. Well done Y6! Next week, I will be assessing the children in small groups so that children's next steps and targets can be set. You will receive an updated list of targets after the half term.

Today we have had a talk all about head lice from the school nurse. The children listened well and have a good understanding of how to keep their hair healthy and clean. Please can you make sure long hair is always tied up for school and read the information leaflet carefully which your child has brought home this evening.

Have a lovely weekend!

W/B 23rd January 2017

We've had a fantastic week in year 6 although we have missed the children who have been poorly. Fingers crossed you are all fighting fit on Monday.

In English, we have looked at two persuasive texts that both centre around the importance of looking after the world we live. Children enjoyed looking for language features that authors use to engage readers and are all experts at spotting personification, alliteration, similes and metaphors. We then began to look at how we can be persuasive and Year 6 have all tried hard to convince me that Thomas "needs" to have a pet snail. Some very convincing arguments were used and I will keep you posted on whether we have a new addition to the Abbott family!

Reminders

WB 16th January 2017

This week has been very busy in year six. The children have persevered with some tricky fraction work in maths; comparing and ordering fractions by finding common denominators! Keep up the fantastic work everyone it will get easier.

We have completed work on our class novel Holes, by writing a report on the "deadly" yellow spotted lizard. I wonder how many facts your child could remember from their research.

Mrs Fowler was impressed with the children who completed their Science homework this week which was keeping a diary of living things we see around us. On Tuesday afternoon, the children collected the data together and were able to present the data in a graph. Well done everyone! Science will be really interesting next  week; we will be doing an investigation into mould – another living thing around us!!!

On Tuesday, we also had a visit from Karen Hower, who talked to Year 6 about internet safety. The children showed a good awareness and maturity when discussing keeping themselves safe. Further workshops are going to be provided later on in the year.

On Friday, year 6 began sharing their homework projects on America. I have been really impressed with the effort, creativity and range of information presented. You have worked really well Year 6, well done!

Have a lovely weekend, spend time doing some of your favourite things and we will see you on Monday.

Mrs Abbott and the Year 6 team! Xx

WB 9th January 2017

Another busy week filled with fabulous new learning has flown by in Year 6. This week in Maths we have been learning all about common multiples and factors. It was a little bit tricky at first, as multiple and factors of numbers can often be confused, we used a given number of dienes to create as many different rectangles as possible. We discovered if you multiply the height by the width then this would equal the given number and in fact those numbers are factors. Year 6 discussed that this could be time consuming and decided they could use written methods of division to help them to find factors of numbers. After a little bit of practise, Y6 had mastered how to find common multiples and factors of very large numbers!

This week in English we have continued with our story Holes. We are really enjoying this book and it is lovely to see the children excited for reading. This week we learnt all about subplots and enjoyed writing our own all about Madame Zeroni. This week we have been trying extra hard with our SPaG. Year 6 enjoyed playing a game of 'Celebrity Guess Who' with a twist! Year 6 worked in pairs to write clues about their celebrity, however, each clue needed to include a different SPaG objective. The children were so enthusiastic and have asked for the games to be left out in our English area for them to use during wet lunch breaks. Keep up the great work Y6!

We had great fun this afternoon with Mrs De'ath. We used IPAD's to learn all about the different climates in North America. We enjoyed drawing different graphs and charts to show the difference in rainfall and temperature. For homework this week, Y6 have been asked to produce a mini project about North or South America. Children will be asked to share their work next Friday afternoon during our Geography lesson, when the winner of the homework challenge will be announced! I can't wait to see all of your home learning!

Have a lovely weekend!

Reminders: All children will require an outdoor PE Kit for Tuesday afternoons

PGL deposits to be sent in to school ASAP

Happy New Year! It was lovely to see everyone returning back to school on Tuesday, excited to tell me all about their fantastic holiday.

We began the week with our new class novel, Holes. We discussed together the different narrative hooks, Louis Sachar, uses to engage with his reader. We then set to work, using our creative minds, to write an alternative opening to the story. Well done to Molly, who is this weeks writer of the week!

During our Maths lessons we have been learning all about common multiple and factors. With our 'Maths Muttering' partner we discussed how to record our thoughts and ideas in a systematic way. Year decided using a table to record multiples was useful to find common multiples, some children used their knowledge of doubling to find larger common multiples. Next week we will be continuing our work on factors. Please practice times tables at home as often as possible, children who can rapidly recall these facts usually do better in other areas of maths too!

This week we began our new topic, 'The Amazing Americas'. Year 6 enjoyed completing their KWL charts and planning a sequence of lessons for this half term. We enjoyed using the atlas' and IPADs to locate the countries in North and South America. I was super impressed that some children were also able to label some of the major cities.

We ended our busy week back by writing a celebration rap about our outstanding Ofsted report. The children were so proud to hear all of the lovely comments the inspectors had made about our class. Children enjoyed reading their rap to the whole school during our celebration assembly on Friday. The excitement continues when we went outside to release our 'outstanding' balloons! I wonder whose balloon will travel the furthest?

Have a lovely weekend!

W/b 5th December

This week Year 6 have completed their work on division. We used a variety of written methods to solve lots of tricky worded problems involving money. We discussed the strategies we needed to use to ensure we arrived at the correct answer and also practised our estimating skills to see if our final answer was sensible.

During our English lessons we enjoyed writing our very own 'Believe' poem. We decorated our poems with a winter scene. Very soon they will be on display in our classroom. We would really like it if you popped in to have a read!

Following our SPaG assessments, Year 6 thought it would be a fabulous idea to create some revision games which we could keep in our classroom to help us to keep our skills sharp. We worked in pairs to create our own Dominoes game to test and challenge our peers.

We had a lovely afternoon on Monday, singing our favourite songs around the Christmas tree. We even had a special visit from Santa!!

Have a lovely weekend!

Reminders: Next week will be assessment week for Y6. Please ensure children arrive to school on time.

We have had great fun this week using Lego as a stimulus for our writing. We created our own story setting and characters then used our FANTASTIC's to bring our settings to life with the use of our brilliant words and sentences! We were so proud of our work we invited our Parents in to take a look!

During our Maths sessions we have been recapping our learning and have completed some very tricky assessments. Children's targets will be updated very soon and a copy will be sent home along with ideas of how you can help at home. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

This week we have been learning all about Road Safety. Year 6 had great fun using the IPADs to create short videos to share with our younger children, explaining how to stay safe near to the roads.

Well done to Ethan, this weeks SPAG champion!

Have a lovely weekend!

Another fantastic yet busy week in Year 6! Well done Year 6 for achieving 100% attendance this week also a huge thank- you to parents and grandparents who ensure children attend school every day and are on time - no learning opportunities are missed in our class!! Thank-you so much to all of the parents who attended Parents Evening this week, it was so lovely to meet you all and share with you the outstanding progress your children are making.

This week in English we have been looking at how to extend our simple sentences using subordinating conjunctions and conditional clauses. I was super impressed with some children in the class who could also include compound- complex sentences independently in their writing. Next week, we are going to be learning how to build cohesion within and across paragraphs in our writing. I'm sure you will agree, Year 6 are producing excellent pieces of writing and the progress they have made since September is amazing! Keep up your terrific attitude towards your learning!!

In our Maths sessions we have continued to refine our written methods for division. Year 6 have been challenged to solve a variety of multi- step worded problems. This week we introduced the bar model as a tool for helping to solve problems. We found this quite difficult and will continue to practise this skill over the next couple of weeks. I  am really pleased with how Year 6 can reason with their answer and explain their working out to their 'Maths Muttering' partner. Keep up the hard work Y6! You are making super mathematicians!

During our History lesson, we went back in time to World War 2 and wrote diary entries in role as an evacuee. We enjoyed discussing the contents of their suitcase and giving reasons why the different items had been included. Year 6 became very excited when they were able to dress up as an evacuee and sit in the 'hot seat'.

This week in school, the children have been learning all about the importance of Anti Bullying Week. Year 6 displayed their mature attitude towards this sensitive subject and could explain what they would do if they or someone else were feeling upset about how others were treating them. Year 6 agreed that bullying is very rare at Grange Valley and could explain the difference between falling out and being bullied. Year 6 enjoyed designing their own poster, which will be displayed around the school grounds.

W/b 31st October

Welcome back everyone! I have enjoyed listening to all of the wonderful things you have been up to over half term! This week in Maths we have been looking at different methods we could use to attempt tricky division problems. Year 6 have found this quite challenging this week, any help you could provide at home would be greatly appreciated. Please continue to practise times tables at home as this will also help to support this area of Mathematics.

This week in English, we began a new novel, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'. The children are thoroughly enjoying the text and have posed many questions which have led to many interesting discussions! We have looked in detail at the character of Bruno and have been 'unpicking' the text to infer and deduce information and help us to make predictions. Next week we will be looking at the characters of Gretel and the children's father, discussing how the story may change through different perspectives.

Year 6 was excited during our Library visit on Monday- the sun was shining and we were able to use the outdoor learning area! We had great fun using the resources in our learning sheds to challenge our friends! We also enjoyed completing a fact hunt about our new author of the term.

We had a wonderful Science afternoon with Mrs Fowler on Wednesday! We began our new topic - Electricity! We told Mrs Fowler all about the things we already knew and what we would like to learn about over the next few weeks! We can't wait for our experiment next week!

During our SEAL Assembly we had a special visit from the Fire Service. We watched a short video clip which highlighted the dangers of fireworks. The firemen told us how to keep safe and even let us have a little look at their fire engine.

Have a lovely weekend!

I can not believe I am writing the final blog entry for our first half term! Time really flies when you have fun! Today we celebrated all of our hard work this half term with a fabulous, fun filled, World War 2 themed day. We really enjoyed using our Maths skills to estimate the amount of ingredients we would need to buy to make war biscuits and using different scales to measure the different quantities. We also put our design skills to the test and created a brilliant 'Make do and mend' rug for our class air raid shelter!

Have a fabulous holiday!

Year 6 have had a great week this week! During our Singapore Maths lessons, we have been learning lots of different methods to multiply three and four digit numbers by a two-digit number. After trailing the different methods, we decided formal long multiplication was the most efficient method for Year 6 to use. Please continue to practise time tables at home with your child.

Our English lessons this week have been focussed on our spelling, grammar and punctuation targets. We had great fun using our knowledge to edit and redraft Celebrity Tweets.

This week during Creative Writing we completed our spooky stories. We used our polishing points table to help us to make our sentences as effective as possible. Next week children will be completing their first assessed piece of writing, where they will be able to showcase everything they have learnt so far this year! I cannot wait to share with you the children's progress!

Finally, I would like to announce this year’s head boy and girl: Jack and Ellia. I am sure you will all agree that they will do a fantastic job and will be brilliant ambassadors for Grange Valley.

Another fabulous week has flown by in Y6. Thank-you to all parents who attended the Singapore Maths Workshop. The children really enjoyed you being part of the lesson and showing you all of the new skills they have learnt. Next week in our maths lessons we will be looking at formal written methods for multiplication.

During our English lessons, we have continued to read the novel, Goodnight Mr Tom. We have been learning all about active and passive voice. We created a top tips poster for our Working Wall to remind us how to distinguish between the two types of sentences. This week we have also been looking at the use of reported speech. We conducted our own interviews in role as Mr Tom, William and Mrs Hartridge. We then practised writing the direct quotes up as reported speech using a variety of journalistic words and phrases. Next week we will be completing our final drafts of our newspapers and very soon they will be on display in our classroom. Feel free to pop in and have a read!!

In our Art and Design lesson, we have been learning all about Anderson and Morrison shelters. We used the laptops to research the similarities and differences between the two shelters and formed our own opinion of which shelter we would have preferred to use and gave reasons why. Over the next few weeks we will be designing and creating our own model shelter. Next week we will be testing the strength of different materials and their shapes.

Have a lovely weekend!

Please ensure all children have their reading books in school everyday!

This week has been super busy for Y6. During our English lessons, we have started to read 'Goodnight Mr Tom'. The children are thoroughly enjoying the story so far and are looking forward to writing their own newspaper next week all about children being evacuated to Weirwold Village.

Over the past few weeks, the children have been trying exceptionally hard to improve their writing. During our editing and redrafting session, Mrs Holcroft came to visit. Mrs Holcroft was blown away at how much the children have learnt since returning back to school. She really enjoyed taking part in our sentence stacking activity and discussing how to improve our sentences using our Y6 criteria and how to stack our writing to make it more effective. Our wonderful stacks are now displayed on our Working Wall. Y6 are very excited to write their final draft of the spooky story during our Creative Writing lesson next week.

This week in Maths we have been revising our written methods for addition and subtraction. Together we created a 'Steps to Success' poster, which we have displayed in our classroom, to help us with these methods in the future. We practised using our methods to solve tricky worded problems. We discussed the different vocabulary used in the questions and looked for clues in the questions so that we were clear in what we were being asked to do. Next week we will begin our next chapter in our Singapore Maths sessions - Multiplication! Over the weekend try to ask your child to count in different multiples!

Have a lovely weekend!

Another fabulous week has flown by in Year 6! This week we have been celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl. Thank-you to all parents who attended our Roald Dahl reading session. The children really enjoyed sharing stories and completing their reading activities with you.

This week during our English lessons, we have been learning how to 'TRaMP' on our sentences. The children have thoroughly enjoyed using this technique and seeing the immediate impact using a variety of adverbials has upon their writing. I am really pleased with the progress displayed in the children's work books already! Year 6 are trying very hard, to think carefully about each sentence and use a variety of sentence types and tips and tricks, which they have learnt over the past two weeks, in all of their pieces of work. Keep up the hard work Year 6!!

During our Maths sessions we have been learning how to compare numbers to ten million, by writing number statements using greater than and less than symbols. Next week we will be learning how to round 7 digit numbers to the nearest million, hundred thousand and ten thousand. We will be looking at how using a number line can help us.

This week in our Computing lessons, we have been learning how to stay SMART when using the internet. We enjoyed creating Internet Safety posters to display around school, to help keep Grange Valley safe online. We also discussed different social media sites and how once information is shared, it is out there for the rest of the world to see. We looked at a profile taken from the internet and identified which information was safe/ not safe to share online and how to increase the young persons privacy. Year 6 are now confident in how to ensure their privacy settings are correct and what information is not safe to share online. Please take five minutes this weekend to check the site your child uses and ensure their privacy settings are correct.

We had great fun in our PE session - training like a WW2 soldier! This week we completed a circuit course, to help us to improve our fitness levels. Y6 recorded their best time on their chart, which they will complete each week. At the end of the half term, Y6 will use the laptops to create a graph to show their, hopefully improved, level of fitness from the half term. The children will then use their graphs as part of their maths lessons.

Have a lovely weekend!

Welcome back! It was lovely to see all of the children returning back to school on Monday, looking extremely smart in their new uniforms! We have had a brilliant first week in Y6 and I am very impressed with the children's attitude towards school and their learning. We had great fun on Monday exploring our new classroom. Y6 were really excited to try out our air raid shelter and spend some time in our library!

During our Maths lessons we have been learning how to read and write numbers to 10 million. This was very tricky to begin with and we used a place value chart and arrow cards to help us. by the end of the week we were able to solve tricky problems and could explain the maximum and minimum amount of counters needed to display a number on the chart. Next week we will be learning how to compare and round large numbers.

This week we have been reading 'The BFG' during our English lesson. We are really enjoying the story so far and have produced some fantastic pieces of writing. Our focus in English this week was to use adventurous vocabulary for effect. We looked at a range of Roald Dahl stories and found examples of how he had used language effectively. We practised improving some of our sentences using Roald Dahl's top tips!

During our S.E.A.L lesson we used the story to discuss the importance of 'never judging a book by it's cover.' We spoke about Sophie and her first impressions of The BFG and how her judgement changed the more she got to know him. Y6 were given a challenge to match personality cards to appearance cards. This was very interesting. We discussed how easy it is to make a judgement about somebody without actually getting to know them first and the impact those judgments could have upon the person.

We ended a very busy week with a fun P.E lesson. Y6 discussed the importance of team work and how these skills transfer in to real life situations. We enjoyed working in our teams to complete some very tricky challenges!

Finally, a huge well done to Poppy for winning our summer homework challenge!!

Have a lovely weekend!
