Welcome to Miss Kelly's Blog!

WB 18.7.16

I can’t believe that this is the final blog post of this academic year! We really have had a fantastic year together. I am so proud of how far all of the children have come, both academically and in many other ways. It has been a year of super progress, lots of laughs and lots of fun! Thank you to all parents and carers who have been so supportive over the past year. The children wouldn’t have had such a good year without your support. It has been a pleasure to watch you all flourish and shine throughout the year! Have a lovely summer! Enjoy, relax and have a fab time! See you in September and good luck for Year 4!

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team.

WB 11.7.16

We had a lovely week in year 3 this week!

In English, we continued with our Harry Potter inspired topic. The children received letters from Professor Dumbledore inviting them to join him at Hogwarts School. The children replied to the Professor, explaining why they would be an excellent wizard!

In Maths we continued with our topic on angles. The children have learnt lots of new vocabulary and can now identify and compare acute, obtuse and right angles.

In computing, we learnt all about how the internet works. We now know that the internet is not just a man with billions of computer screens in his office. Instead, it is the connection between billions of computers right across the globe!

We concluded our science topic on plants by naming, ordering and explaining the life cycle of a plant. We can now explain the processes of germination, growing, flowering and pollination.

A big well done to the children from our class who represented Grange Valley at the Rugby Competition! They did fantastically well and came third in the whole competition!

Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Mr Campbell & Miss Kelly

WB 3.7.16

It’s been another interesting week in Year 3 this week.

In English we have started a new fiction topic based on the book ‘Harry Potter’ and the philosophers stone which the children have found very exciting.

In Maths we have been learning all about angles. So far, we know that an angle is created when two lines meet at one point. We know that angles can be found on the inside and on the outside of a range of shapes.

In Science, we continued to learn more about plants and focused on what you find inside the flower of a plant. We learned all about the function of the different parts of a flower including the filaments and the petals.

On Wednesday, we had a lovely PE session where the children enjoyed playing rounders and developing their batting, catching and fielding skills.

Thursday was our school disco and we had lots of fun chatting, dancing and listening to the music that the DJ played. The children really enjoyed the event and the feedback from them has been extremely positive.

Friday was another opportunity for our class to spend time with Mrs Sharrocks in preparation for next year. They wrote about The Lonely Robot and then also made Minion birthday cards which they really enjoyed.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Mr Campbell & Miss Kelly

WB 27.6.16

It’s been another interesting week in year 3!

We are coming towards the end of our Maths topic about Money. We have been looking at lots of different methods for finding how much change we should get when we buy a range of items. So far we have used the pounds and pence method, the number line method and column subtraction.

In Science, we set up an experiment to investigate how water is transported in plants by using celery and blue food dye. We haven’t seen much change yet, but hopefully by next week we may be able to see a little more.

In English, we have come to the end of our topic on non-fiction text where the children produced some excellent reports on a variety of different animals. I certainly learned a lot from reading them! We also created some lovely creative writing from watching a trailer called 'A close encounter'. You can see this video below. It sparked lots of fantastic writing from the children!

In RE this week, we explored the events in Jesus' life and ordered them chronologically. We had a lovely time reflecting on these events and then comparing them to our own lives.

In Art, we continued our String Printing unit by experimenting with lots of different materials. Some materials made super prints, whereas others made ones that we maybe wouldn't use again. The children evaluated the effectiveness of each material that they used.

Thank you for all of your donations for the Summer Fair. We had a lovely afternoon on Friday, despite the rain!

Hope you all have a good weekend!

Miss Kelly and Mr Campbell

'A Close Encounter'

WB. 20.6.16

It’s been a lovely week in year 3 this week!

In Maths, we’ve continued with our topic of money. We have been looking at lots of different methods that we can use for adding and subtracting money, including exchanging coins of the same value. We even had a very special visitor come to see us on Thursday to see how wonderful our Maths journals looked!

Our Science experiments came to an end this week and we observed the changes that the plants had made over the last couple of weeks. We found out that the majority of our plants and changed colour and most of the flowers had fallen off. We came to the conclusion that plants do not grow healthily when we make changes to the conditions they are grown in. (no water, light or heat).

Our Topic lesson was a personal highlight of the week for me. We began our topic on the Normans where we voted between four candidates for who we though should be the king of England which was actually really current with all of the events and results of the EU referendum. The votes for our king election will be counted and the winner revealed on Monday!

Mrs Threlkeld has also been extremely impressed with some of our work in Year 3 this week and has encouraged us to keep up our excellent standards!

Well done to year 3 this week. Have a brilliant weekend,

Mr Campbell

WB 13.6.2016

We have had a week of new topics in Year 3 this week.

After we finished our Maths topic on time last week, we started a new topic all about money. We have been using coins and notes to count different amounts of money and have also been adding two different amounts of money together.

In Science, we have been keeping a close eye on our flowering plants. We are starting to see real changes in the way that the flowers and leaves look!

Our English topic for the Week has been focusing on poetry and in particular, the use of similes within poems. We even got to perform a poem called ‘Being told off!’ by Fiona Tomlinson which was fantastic to watch.

As it has been a week of football with the Euro 2016 championships in full flow, the children had the excitement of watching the match between England and Wales and after watching Jamie Vardy score an equalising goal for England the class celebrated in spectacular fashion! It was all great fun!

The children had a lovely morning with Mrs Sharrocks as part of their transition. They created some wonderful artwork and wrote 'A Recipe for Friendship' to go up on display in their new classroom! They can't wait to see what is in store next week!

Below the blog you will find some pictures from our poetry performance.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Mr Campbell

It's been a very lovely week in Year 3 this week!

We have finished our unit on Time in Maths. I have to say that I am so proud of how far the children have come! Lots of the children can now tell the time fluently and can solve problems involving time. Well done Year 3 and keep up the hard work as time is a very tricky concept!

In Science, we set up our own experiments changing the conditions of different plants. We can't wait to see what will happen to them over the next few weeks! I wonder if our predictions will be correct...

Thank you so much to all of the children who brought in their projects for The Normans after the half term. Wow! I was blown away by the effort that you had all made! It is clear that you have all learnt so much over your half term and we can't wait to learn even more during our Topic lessons. Our Topic projects are now on display in the classroom so if you would like to see them, feel free to bob in.

We have spent the majority of this week building up to the celebrations for the Queen's 90th Birthday. In English, we created fact files all about the Queen, by finding facts from non-fiction texts. We also discussed how we would change the country if we were Queen for a day! In Art, we created bunting to decorate the school with and we also designed and made our own flags.

The highlight of our week was definitely our Garden Party on Friday! We enjoyed a whole school buffet, where we were treated to lots of yummy things and we played music and celebrated the Queen's birthday in style! We then had an assembly with parents and celebrated by singing and dancing. We even got a very special visitor! The hats, cakes and bags that the children made were amazing so well done to everyone who entered the competitions! Thank you to all of the parents and carers who brought in food and drink for the children. We really were spoiled for choice and are so very lucky! There are pictures of our celebrations below!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly

It's been World Culture Week in school this week!

We had a very exciting visit this week from the Reptile Man! He brought in a range of exciting reptiles, amphibians and spiders for us to look at! We learnt where each animal originally comes from and we even held some!

In Art, we designed our own Save the Children kites. This tied in with our culture week as we learnt about the charity and wanted to do something to make a difference. We then conducted a Science experiment to find out which string length makes a kite fly perfectly! We had a lovely afternoon doing this with Mr Campbell!

In Maths, we have been learning about measuring time in hours. We are now able to use analogue and digital clocks to measure time in hours and explain in words how to measure time effectively.

In English, we learnt how to use time conjunctions in role play and in our writing. We played the roles of George and Harold from Captain Underpants and we were being interviewed by police officers to tell the tale of the talking toilets! We needed to use time conjunctions at the start and in the middle of our sentences. This was tricky at first but we became much more confident by the end of the week!

In Topic, we learnt all about Roman Baths. We learnt that the baths were created by the Romans and there were saunas, gyms and even food courts in the baths! We used non-fiction texts to create our own non-fiction reports all about the baths.

Home learning projects have been sent home for our next topic, The Normans. I am really looking forward to seeing what you the children come up with! You never fail to impress me!

Have a lovely week off,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team.

We've had another great week in Year 3!

On Monday, we went on our trip to Grosvenor Museum. There, we learnt all about the Roman invasion, which we already knew lots about due to our work in Topic! We were lucky enough to dress up as Romans and walk to the amphitheatre for battle! We learnt some battle defence movements to avoid arrows and the enemy. We also learnt some formation skills - we are now well and truly ready for battle! We made sure Chester knew that we were there by chanting a Roman marching song through the streets!

We then went into a workshop where we learnt all about Roman mosaics, spices and food and became architects! We learnt about the Roman roads and predicted what would and wouldn't rot underground. Overall, it was a super day and I was really proud of all of Year 3's behaviour! Well done!

In RE, we were lucky to have a visit from Sandra from the Church, who is also one of our governors. As part of our Parables unit, we thought of some questions that we would like to ask a Christian to find out more about their beliefs and how God is present in their lives. Year 3 asked some really interesting questions, and spoke confidently and sensitively about their beliefs. It is really important to respect others and that is exactly what Year 3 showed this week.

In Maths this week, we have been measuring time in seconds using analogue and digital clocks. Lots of us are now able to discuss the relationship between seconds and minutes and can record time confidently and accurately.

In English, we worked on our predicting skills to predict what would happen next in Captain Underpants! Later, we found out that the talking toilets came alive and took over the school!

Don't forget, it is the big spelling test next week. Please ensure that you help your child by practising with them so that they can achieve their full potential.

A note to all parents

Mr Campbell, who has been with us since September, is a trainee teacher and is part of our Schools Direct course. He will now be taking 70-80% of the teaching time in Year 3. He has been judged as a good and outstanding trainee and he will continue to progress on his journey. As part of his role, he will dismiss the children and fulfill most of the teaching responsibilities for Year 3 from Summer 2 half term. All of this will be overseen by myself, Miss Kelly to ensure that the children are progressing and reaching their full potential. If you have an queries, please don't hesitate to contact me.

WB 9.5.2016

It's been a busy week in Year 3 this week!

In Maths, we have continued our work on Time. We are really improving and the children are very proud of their new time telling skills! Keep it up Year 3.

In English, we took on our special task from Mrs Holcroft. We read a story all about Freddie the Fish from Finland. The story told us of the importance of working as a team and sticking together. We then wrote our own versions of this story. The children used incredible description and really took pride in their work this week. Well done! I was very proud when I read your writing.

In Topic, we learnt all about Hadrian's Wall. We learnt why it was build, who built it and what features it had. We can't wait for our trip on Monday to learn out even more about the Romans!

In RE, we wrote a witness account of the Parable of The Sower and the Seeds. There were some lovely written descriptions. Well done Year 3!

On Thursday, we went outside to practise writing our Year 3 spellings with water and paintbrushes on the ground! This was a really fun way to practise our spellings and have fun at the same time! Our trip is on Monday. Please make sure that you bring in a packed lunch in a disposable bag. If it is sunny, make sure that your child has sun cream on before they come to school. We will be leaving promptly so make sure that you are on time. The children are really looking forward to it!

Have a great weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team.

WB 2.5.2016

It's been a lovely week in Year 3 this week!

In English, we started our text unit on Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. We love the story so far and we have created our new inventions using powerful verbs and relative drop in clause sentences! Well done Year 3!

In Maths, we have started our work on Time. We are learning how to tell the time to the nearest minute and any help you can give your child at home is great! Again, this is a tricky skill and the children need as much practise as they can get!

In Computing, we created pie charts on excel and copied them into word. We learnt how to enter the data ourselves as a frequency chart and then excel translates this into a pie chart for you! Next week, we are looking at other types of charts.

In RE, we discussed the Parable of the Sheep. We realised that Jesus told this story to show that we always belong and everyone is accepted. We related this story to our lives and prepared a reflection together, reflecting on our talents and what makes us special.

We had a super Art day this week! Year 3 explored the work of pop artist Romero Britto. We researched his art work and then created a piece of art in his style. Our art pieces will be up on display in the hall shortly. Take a look to see how talented we are!

In PE, we continued working on our dance sequences that we created last week. We used motifs to inspire us and then performed our sequences to the rest of the class, giving and receiving feedback.

We have been given a special task by Mrs Holcroft this week! We have been given a shoal of fish artwork to inspire our writing next week! I wonder what we will explore...

WB 25.4.2016

We've had another great week in Year 3! This week, in English, we have finished our Information Texts unit by writing our own information text about a sport of our choice. We used lots of Year 3 objectives in our writing, such as interesting sentence types, paragraphing and subtitles. We then redrafted our writing to make sure that it was the best that it could possibly be! Well done for your super reports Year 3!

We have finished our fractions unit in Maths and lots of us have a really secure knowledge of fractions and solving problems using fractions and bar models. Next week, we are moving on to Time. Please help your child by asking them to tell the time as frequently as possible. In Year 3, children need to know how to tell the time to the nearest minute and this is a very tricky task, especially as it is a life skill!

In Topic this week, we looked at the roads in Britain that the Romans made. We discovered why making roads was so important and then located these roads on the map of Great Britain.

In Art, we created our borders using a printing stick and paint. We used repeating patterns and made sure that we left a gap in between each 'mosaic.'

In Science and Computing, we collected data and presented it in tally charts, bar charts and line graphs. You need to take care when plotting on a graph and the children did fantastic!

In RE, we listened to the Parable of the Builders and discussed what that parable meant to us. It taught us that we should act upon our words and learn to be better people, with strong foundations. We then role - played the story and performed this to the class.

WB 18.4.2016

We've had a fantastic start to our summer term! I'm so proud of how the children have started this term, with a super attitude towards learning.

In English, we have started a new unit which has captured lots of our attention! We are exploring sport through Information Texts. This week, we have explored the features of information texts and looked at the third person pronouns and the present tense. Next week, we will research, plan and write our own information texts based on a sport of our choice, making sure that we include all the necessary features.

In Maths, we have learnt how to find fractions of whole numbers for example: 3 cakes are shared between 4 people. How much of the cake does each person get? We have all shown super understanding of this and are keen to practise it through drawing pictures and explaining to others. We are moving on to our final week of fractions next week, where we will be ordering fractions.

In Art, we created our own Roman borders using an internet programme. Our borders were beautiful and next week, we will be printing borders with paint and a printing stick.

In Science, we started our 'tea' topic, where we researched tea and explored the different qualities of tea, by looking at different textures and smells of different tea bags.

We celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday by drawing portraits of her which will be displayed around school. They looked beautiful!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 28.3.2016

What a lovely final week we have had!

In English, we have explored Poetry this week. We started off by performing poetry out loud. We thought about our body language, tone and added actions to our performances. We then added instruments to enhance our performance further! It is sometimes a little scary to perform in front of the class but we had some fantastic performances! Well done Year 3!

In Maths, we have continued our work on fractions. We learnt how to find fractions of an amount, for example to find 1 third of 12, we can divide 12 by 3. The children explored this using pictures and calculations and we will be continuing this after half term.

In Topic, we summed up all of our learning about early Crime and Punishment in Britain. It is amazing to see how much the children have learnt over the past 6 weeks and how much they have enjoyed this topic. We are now experts on Crime and Punishment in the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Tudor and Victorian times.

In Science, Isaac had a problem! He needed to find some curtains for his baby brother's bedroom which didn't allow light to pass through them! We decided to help Isaac and conduct an investigation to find out which material was the most opaque. Luckily, we found out that black felt would be the best material for the baby's bedroom!

I am looking forward to next half term already - we have lots of exciting things planned!

Have a lovely break and get some rest!

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 21.3.2016

We've had a very busy week this week and have managed to cram lots in to the four days!

On Monday morning, we met the author Gareth P. Jones. We loved hearing about his Steampunk Pirates series! We learnt that he writes a song every time he writes a new book and we were lucky enough to hear some of them! He also talked lots about the importance of redrafting so we have took inspiration from him and completed lots of redrafting this week!

On Tuesday, we went to Church for our Easter experience. As always, the children's behaviour was brilliant and they really enjoyed their morning. The children asked lots of inquisitive questions and were really eager to learn more about the story of Easter and what that means to Christians.

On Wednesday, we each earned a certificate in First Aid! The children learnt all about the response needed if a person is unconscious and they also learnt how to bandage injuries.

In Maths, we compared fractions with the same denominator using the less than and greater than signs. Some of us used the bar model to help us which is a great way to visualise the fractions!

In Topic, we learnt all about Victorian prisons. We learnt that the Victorians were the first people to invent prisons as punishment and the Police Force! The children wrote diary entries in the role of a Victorian prisoner. They discovered all about the punishments in Prison and the tasks that people were expected to do! It was great fun!

Have a lovely Easter weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 13.3.2016

We've had another great week in Year 3.

First of all, thank you to all the parents who attended Parents Evening. It was lovely to share your children's progress with you and have a catch up. I hope you are as proud of them as we are.

The children have been really busy with assessments all week. They have achieved some fantastic scores and it is so lovely to see how well they are doing! Well done Year 3!

In Topic, we learnt all about the life of Dick Turpin, the Highwayman. We found out about the Georgian Period and decided whether we thought that Dick Turpin was a villain or a hero. The children used sources to justify their thoughts.  We are looking forward to finding out about the Victorian Crime and Punishment next week.

In Science, we learnt about the sun and how it can be both helpful and harmful. We learnt about UV rays and how they can be harmful to our skin and eyes. We then created posters teaching others how to protect their skin and warning them about the dangers of the sun.

The Book Fare was this week and it was lovely to see the children so excited about books! We have a real love for reading in Year 3 and we are all very excited to go to Central Library next Monday and meet Gareth P. Jones.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team.

It's been a busy week in Year 3 this week!

We have been working hard to find equivalent fractions. Our friend told us that finding equivalent fractions involved multiplication and division... After some exploring, we found that they were right! Well done for your super fraction work this week. We will be finding the simplest form next week.

In English, we have been working on adding different types of conjunctions in our writing. We learnt how to add subordinating conjunctions, coordinating conjunctions and finally, time conjunctions. The children are really good at using time conjunctions to start sentences and in the middle of sentences. Bill's New Frock is still proving popular and we can't wait to see what happens next!

In Topic, we explored the Terrible Tudors and their awful punishments! We used different case studies and sentenced people to different punishments for their crimes! We were very glad that these punishments are not around now!

In Art and Design, we got creative and investigated which materials would be the best to design our kites. Next week, we are designing our kite and then we will move on to making it in the next few weeks!

Finally, Year 3 and Year 4 produced an excellent assembly showing off all their learning about Islam. Well done Year 3 and Year 4!

It is assessment week next week. Please ensure that you go over the spellings sent home with your child to give them the best chance at achieving their potential.

WB 29/02/2016

We’ve had another fantastic week of learning in Year 3!

We’ve been really enjoying our class novel Bill’s New Frock in English. This week, we have made predictions about the book, wrote a character profile of Bill and asked questions to improve our understanding of the text through hot seating. We also learnt how to write emotion comma sentences and 3ed sentences as we pretended that we, like Bill, woke up as a boy or a girl! I am looking forward to reading our creative writing pieces this week as I hope that I will see lots of these ambitious sentence types!

In Maths, we have continued our work on fractions. We have learnt how to subtract fractions with the same denominator. We have also looked at equivalent fractions and learnt that equivalent fractions are the same size. Some of us are really becoming challenge seekers and are spotting links between our times tables and equivalent fractions! I wonder if this will be explored more next week!

We had a really exciting Topic lesson this week. We learnt all about the Anglo-Saxon punishments. We learnt about Wergild for body parts and role played a court scene debating which punishments should be given for certain crimes. Why not ask your child about these severe punishments?

In Science, we conducted an experiment to test the reflectivity of different materials. We set up our own fair test and decided what should be the independent and dependant variables. We then conducted our test and recorded our results.

World Book Day was a real success with some fantastic costumes! Thank you for all your efforts! The children had a lovely day.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

What a fantastic first week back filled with lots of learning!

This week, we have celebrated British Values Week as a school. We learnt all about British Values through our English Lessons. First, we decided on our own Manifesto in small groups, like Political Parties do, and we read our Manifestos to the class. We then voted for the party who we thought would make our country a better place. We also created our own laws and consequences. We then discussed respect and created a Guide for Respect for our infant children all about respect. As we were teaching the infants how to be respectful, we were also being good role models!

In Maths, we started our first week on fractions and the children absolutely loved it! We learnt how to count in tenths, add fractions with the same denominator and learnt that if a fraction has the same number on the numerator and the denominator; it is equal to 1 or 1 whole. I’m really looking forward to continuing our fraction work next week!

In Science, we started our topic of Light. We discussed what we want to find out and the children asked lots of great questions. We discussed how we need light to see and that darkness happens when there is an absence of light. Next week, we are taking part in an experiment.

In Computing, the children used a website called Isle of Tune to create digital music. The children were hooked on this website and it was so lovely to see them excited about digital devices. Next week, we will be adding loops to our tracks. Soon we’ll be hitting the charts with our fabulous songs!

I was amazed by the Home Learning Projects that the children completed through half term. It was so hard to choose 3 winners as they were all fantastic! Thank you for your hard work and effort. The projects will look brilliant on our Topic wall and have created a good foundation of knowledge for our Crime and Punishment unit!

This week, we had Safer Internet Day. The theme this year was ‘Play your part for a better internet’. The hashtag was #shareaheart and we used the day to promote kind words on the internet.

We learnt that words on the internet are permanent. Why would we want to spread negative words that last forever? We compared our T shirts to the internet as words that we write on our clothes are permanent. To promote Safer Internet Day and #shareaheart, we all wore T shirts and wrote kind words of encouragement on each other. This taught us to be more careful about what we are writing online and spread messages of love, not hate. It also reminded us what special friends we have and how lucky we are!

We also celebrated Safer Internet Day by revisiting the important rules of the Internet that are embedded in our school daily lives. Each class created new mouse mats and E-safety signs to surround our new class computers

Year 3 had a lovely day and it was lovely to see the children celebrating each other!

Professor Poopenshtinken, the mathematical genius, came back to visit us this week. He led an assembly for our children where he claimed to be the greatest mathematician ever. The Professor stunned our KS1 children by reading someone's mind. He was able to work out a number that they had calculated using his amazing tricks. With KS2 the Professor squared the numbers 55 and 106 instantly in his head. The children were mesmerised! He told all the children that he could teach them to do the same tricks using only the power of numbers. Year 3 were particularly excited about this club!

The Professor's friends will be coming back to school after half term (on Mondays starting 22nd February) to run super fun Magical Maths Clubs. There are separate clubs for KS1 and KS2 and they will run for 5 consecutive weeks. PLEASE NOTE - The price is £31 not £37 as shown on the leaflet. This is because it is a 5 week club instead of 6 weeks. Call 01744 776110 or visit www.magicalmathsclub.com/haltonsthelensandwarrington to book. Professor Poopenshtinken has told me that a lot of people have booked already and places are going quickly so book now to avoid disappointment.

I am really looking forward to seeing your Crime and Punishment projects after half term!

Have a lovely half term and a relaxing break

Miss Kelly

We’ve had another busy week in Year 3 this week!

It’s been National Reading Week this week so we started off our week with a bang! Author, Steve Hartley, came in on Monday. He read extracts from his hilarious books and we had a story telling session with him in the afternoon. His books are really funny and Year 3, particularly the boys, were very inspired by them!

Steve set us a challenge this week. This challenge was to plan and write a story about absolutely anything! The children didn’t need any stimuli and we were asked to create our own character and then our own story. We then completed our writing assessment as we wrote our stories. I’m so pleased to say that the children showed off all of their super writing skills and they wrote fantastic stories!

We have been exploring Growth Mindset as a school and our focus this week was about making mistakes. We had a lovely circle time session where we discussed how we felt when we made mistakes and we wrote these feelings onto paper. We then discussed how it’s okay to make mistakes and how they are all part of growing and learning. We crumpled our papers up and wrote positive messages on our papers. These are for us to use whenever we’re feeling a little bit down and need reassuring that it’s okay to make mistakes!

In Topic this week, we explored all about earthquakes and learnt about the scale rating of different earthquakes. All children now know what to do in case of an earthquake as we even had a false alarm!

In Art, we created our final volcano landscape picture. I have to say that they were amazing! The children are so passionate about drawing and the volcano topic has really ‘hooked’ them this half term! Our final pictures are now on display and they have really brightened up our classroom.

To end our National Reading Week, we had our Harry Potter reading night. The children enjoyed hot chocolate and since we have been exploring settings in English, we designed our own Harry Potter film set! It was lovely to see the children enjoying themselves and looking very cosy in their pjs!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 25/1/2016

We’ve had another fantastic week in school!

In Maths, we have learnt some formal methods for division. We have learnt the chunking method and lots of us are now more comfortable using this method to solve problems! Keep it up Year 3!

In English, we have moved onto our Familiar Settings unit. We are using the story ‘A Bear Called Paddington’ by Michael Bond as a stimulus for our writing. We are really enjoying the story so far and we are looking forward to comparing the settings portrayed in the book and in the film next week! Our writing presentation is really improving! Lots of children are achieving lots of dojos for presentation at the minute and it is fantastic that more children are taking pride in their work! I am proud of you all.

In Topic, we discussed the positives and negatives of living near a volcano. Why not ask your child if they would like to live near a volcano and why? You might find out some interesting facts!

In Art this week, we looked at different textures around us and used our sketching skills to try and replicate the textures in our sketchbooks. It is lovely to see how many of our children are so talented and enjoy the subject.

It would be great if you could continue to practise the 3,4 and 8 times tables with your child. These are the times tables needed for Year 3 and as we learnt this week, we need to know our times tables to help with our dividing!

Next week is National Reading Week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 18/1/2016

Another week has flown by in Year 3!

In Maths, we have continued our work on Further Multiplication and Division. We have learnt how to do the column multiplication method and we have spotted links between this and addition as we carry over 10s in both methods. Some children can now do this confidently and lots of children are feeling more comfortable with this method as we found that it is more efficient. Next week, we are moving onto long division.

In English, we have concluded our Persuasive Writing Unit and are saying goodbye to Sully and the gang from Monsters Inc! We have really enjoyed this unit and the children’s persuasion skills are now second to none! Well done Year 3, your engagement and effort has been fantastic!

We had a very interesting Science lesson this week, where we tested the durability and permeability of rocks. It was very hands on and we learnt an awful lot that we didn’t know before! We then sorted the rocks into different categories.

In Art, we sketched different pictures of volcanoes and used different colours to represent feelings. I was so glad when a few children brought in pictures of volcanoes that they had sketched at home! It’s lovely to see that they are enjoying their learning.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

Reminders

Please ensure that your children are staying safe online. We discuss E-safety lots throughout our days in school and the children are very mature and are able to identify wrongs and rights on the internet. Please, however, ensure that you are aware what APPs they have on their tablets and check their suitability. The children’s safety is paramount. If you have any questions, feel free to call into school.

o2 website is very useful and informative if you have any other questions about keeping your child safe online.

We've had a fantastic week in Year 3!

In English, we created a persuasive poster to persuade people to come and study at Monsters University. We used word publisher to make our poster more attractive and eye catching. They are now on display in our classroom and look fantastic! The children loved adding their snappy slogans, subtitles and images to help attract new students! We planned our work using paragraphs and are doing a big creative write next week all about Monsters University. I'm really looking forward to it!

In Maths, we have moved on to further multiplication and division. So far, we have learnt how to times multiples of 10 by a single digit number and do calculations such as 13 x 5. We can do this by either repeated addition (method 1) or decomposing the number into 10 and 3 and then multiplying each of these numbers by 5 and adding the totals together. This is tricky so any help you can give your child at home would benefit them! Why not have a family x table challenge?!

We were set an exciting task by Mrs Holcroft this week! We were given a cardboard shape and told to create anything that we wanted with it but it had to represent our British Values! As a class, we chose a lion as it represents courage and bravery and is a famous British icon. Look at our pictures below to see how we got on! Our lion will be on display in the school's entrance.

In Science, we explored different types of rock and sorted them based on their properties. We are learning lots about rocks and realising that there is so much to learn that we didn't know before!

I am looking forward to another brilliant week with you next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 4/1/2016

Welcome back everyone! What a great start to the week we have had!

In English, we have started our new unit of Persuasive Texts. We are exploring Monsters University and trying to persuade monsters to come and study scaring at the university! We have learnt new persuasive techniques and created our own posters. We are going to create our poster using word processing skills next week and are looking forward to being ‘the dean’ of the university and writing a speech to persuade people to come and study at the best university around! We prepared this speech orally and our partners rated our persuasive skills out of 5!

In Maths, we have continued with our work on multiplication and division by 3, 4 and 8. We have also begun solving problems using scales, for example. If Miss Kelly has 12 marbles and Mrs Larner has 3 times as many. How many does Mrs Larner have? We were brilliant at solving the problem but we found explaining how we did it quite tricky so we used pictures and a bar model to help us!

In Topic, we started our ‘Extreme Earth’ topic. We looked at how the earth was formed and what is under our feet! We created a model using plastercine which really helped us visualise the layers of the earth. Look at our pictures below to see what we got up to! In Science, we are doing a similar topic exploring our earth and this week, we discussed why rocks are important to us and come in many forms.

Our computing topic required lots of debugging skills this week and we really enjoyed getting our teeth into Logo and working out why our algorithms weren’t working! It was a challenging but rewarding task.

We started our cricket this term with the cricket coach, Chris. The children did go outside this week and they may do during other sessions, depending on the weather. Children can bring in jogging bottoms or anything similar to make sure that they are not too cold outside.

That’s all for this week! Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

We've finished for Christmas!

We've had  lovely, Christmassy week this week! We have been to Christ Church, where we learnt all about the story of Christmas. It was a lovely afternoon and the children had fantastic behaviour! Well done Year 3!

We also had our Key Stage 2 X Factor performances this week! The children were amazing on stage. A big thank you to those children who came back for the evening performance. We hope you enjoyed both shows!

On Thursday, we had our Key Stage 2 disco! The children really enjoyed themselves and were treated to a fantastic buffet afterwards. Thank you parents for bringing in the food! It was much appreciated by all the children.

Our classroom smelled amazing because we made snowmen biscuits yesterday! It was a lovely activity and the children enjoyed it.

A big thank you to all parents from Miss Kelly for your support over the first term. We have had a fantastic term with lots of successes and fun!

Thank you from all our staff for the lovely gifts. It is very kind of you all.

Have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year. See you in 2016!

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team.

WB 7/12/2015

We’ve had another brilliant week in Year 3!

In English, we have continued our work on instructional texts. We have added adverbs and time adverbs to our instructions and redrafted instructions to improve and polish them.

In Maths, we have continued our work on multiplication and division. We divided by 3 and 4 by using both the grouping method and the sharing method. We used pictures and concrete materials to help us and then created number sentences from these methods. Mr Campbell even brought in muffins which we loved working with! We will continue with this next week.

We have had lots of fun preparing for our X Factor performance this week! The show is looking fabulous and all of the children are showing fantastic respect towards the other acts. We have a very talented bunch of pupils at Grange Valley! We also had our Christmas dinner this week. This was a lovely dinner and it was great to see everyone feeling so festive and enjoying themselves. We were lucky enough to watch a puppet show this morning which told us all of the importance of Christmas. It was good fun and reminded us of the important things this Christmas, as well as all of the lovely presents.

What a great week Year 3 have had!

We’ve been very busy in English learning all about instructional texts. We have followed instructions, written success criteria’s for them and assessed the effectiveness of instructions. We also gave instructions to ‘Stig’ via role play to ensure that he could complete daily tasks in school. Next week, we will be moving on to creating our own instructions and using non-fiction presentation devices such as subtitles.

In Maths, we have started our new unit of multiplication and division. Just a reminder, by the end of Year 3, children are expected to know their 3,4 and 8 times tables and solve problems involving them. The children are really enjoying this and are motivated to improve! Well done Year 3!

In Science, we conducted a fair test experiment to investigate whether magnets can attract through water. We had a fantastic time exploring and we enjoyed making predictions and seeing if they were right.

It seems as though we are officially allowed to talk about Christmas! We’ve had a lovely, Christmas filled week as we were lucky enough to watch the pantomime, Beauty and the Beast and we had our tree lighting ceremony. The festivities will continue in to next week! I’m excited already!

We’ve had another brilliant week in Year 3!

In Maths, the children have been introduced to the Bar Model as a way of visualising Maths problems. This was tricky at first as we had to make sure that our models represented the problems and the numbers in the problems, however we quickly saw that this was a great help in order to help us solve difficult problems.

In English, we have been exploring more of our class novel, Stig of The Dump. This week, we learned how to add double ‘ly’ sentences and we created our own chapter for Stig of the Dump. It is so lovely to see the children adding in elements of what has been taught so confidently now, such as fronted adverbials, adverbs and correctly punctuated speech. We have a class full of talented writers! Well done Year 3!

In Computing this week, we took photographs on the iPads in preparation for our video making. We are creating ‘A Typical Day in Year 3’ so we took pictures of what we felt defined our class and are special to us and our school day. We cropped and enhanced the photographs and next week we will import them into ‘iMovie’ and add text and music.

In Science, we have been continuing our work on magnets. We looked at the different poles on a magnet and predicted whether they would attract or repel, and then tested our predictions.

What a great week Year 3 has had!

In Maths, we have been solving problems using column subtraction with renaming. This is a really tricky skill and we have sent some of this home for your child to complete for homework. We are still working on this so any support you can give your child is great!

In English, we have been exploring more of our class novel, Stig of The Dump. We have been working on adding adverbs and conjunctions to extend our writing and make it more interesting for the reader. We are loving our class novel and can’t wait to see what happens in the story next week!

This week was anti-bullying week. We created a school pledge and signed it. We created handprints which show our support for anti-bullying and

The highlight of our week was definitely our ‘Who First Lived in Britain?’ day. This afternoon, the children enjoyed a carousel of tasks all relating to the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The children enjoyed making Stone Henge cakes, creating hunting and farming weapons from the Bronze Age, creating Stone Age jewellery and cave design. It was a brilliant afternoon and the children’s engagement in this topic is fantastic! Thank you all for your input into your child’s fantastic costumes. They really added excitement to the day!

We have had a lovely week in Year 3

Firstly, can I say thank you to all of the parents who came to see me at Parents Evening. It was lovely to have a chat with you all about your child’s progress and celebrate their achievements!

This week, in English, we have started our new book ‘Stig of The Dump.’ So far, we have met the characters Barney and Stig. Stig is very peculiar and we are yet to find out why! We have revisited speech punctuation and we have learnt what a fronted adverbial is and used them in our writing. I hope to see lots more fronted adverbials in your future writing!

In Maths, we have learnt how to do column subtraction with and without renaming. This is a tricky skill and we understand the concept but sometimes we forget to rename! I am really pleased with the children’s understanding and their ability to reason.

In Topic, we created our own Stone Age shelters! It was a fun, collaborative lesson where we were able to use our communication skills and our Art and DT Skills. Have a look at our pictures below!

In Science, we started our first lesson on Magnets. It was very fun as we learnt what a force was and we were able to explore with different toys! We are really looking forward to next week’ lesson!

The children are also showing lots of progress in Computing. We are creating comic strips on Publisher. This week, we added captions and borders to our pictures and this made our comic strips look really effective! Next week we will be adding speech bubbles to our comic strips!

Well done to our children who went to Heyeswood to sing a selection of Harvest Songs. The children were very polite and respectful and they made us proud! Sorry to the footballers as the competition got cancelled due to poor weather conditions! We have been told that it will be rearranged for after Christmas.

Have a lovely weekend,

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to the term!

In English, we have finished our newspaper unit by writing our very own newspaper article. The children assessed each other’s work and were brilliant reporters and editors. Next week, the children will be moving on to ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King which complements our Stone Age – Iron Age topic.

Speaking of the Stone Age, what fantastic projects Year 3 created! I could see that the children were all extremely busy over half term and they are now displayed and look amazing in the classroom. Well done Year 3, your research projects made me proud!

In Science this week, the children became archaeologists! They dug for animal fossils and had to work out which animals they had found. This was quite tricky for some animals, such as the horse, but others were easier, such as the frog! Next week, we are moving on to magnets and forces.

In Maths, we have moved on to subtraction and you will see from the children’s homework that we have been subtraction numbers mentally from 3 digit numbers. Next week, we will be moving on to formal column methods of subtraction. Some children already spotted that if we could use column addition, maybe we could do column subtraction by changing the signs! I am very impressed by the children’s curiosity and wonder in Maths at the minute!

The children have been talking about how we can keep safe on Bonfire Night. The fire service came into school to tell the children all about the dangers. Please remember... If you are having or going to a bonfire party over the next few days -  enjoy but keep safe!

The children also completed poppies which will be added to our weeping willow in the hall. I’m sure that this will look spectacular and will be a great way of showing respect to those who lost their lives.

Parents Evening is next week, I am looking forward to meeting with you all to discuss your child’s successes.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 19/10/2015

I can't believe we're at the end of the this half term!

We've had a lovely week this week with lots of fantastic progress in Maths! Most children are now able to add using formal methods of column addition. I am really proud of the children as this is a tricky skill and they are really showing off how clever they are by being able to complete column additions!

In English, we have explored the features of a newspaper and learnt some new words such as 'caption' 'headline' and 'witness statement'. The children also learnt how to use paragraphs to group related material and were very good at using them in their writing! We loved the Marvel theme and I am really looking forward to reading the children's newspaper reports over the half term.

If you came to watch the Harvest Assembly, you will agree with me when I say that the children were absolutely amazing! They sung their hearts out and worked so hard in the upcoming weeks to put on a wonderful assembly for you. We really showcased our talents as we had singing, dancing, poetry and reading aloud. I was so proud of the whole class. Well done Year 3!

We completed our Greek masks and they look brilliant! The children planned their mask design, created the masks and then painted the final details. They really enjoyed this project over the half term.

Our next half term topic is all about the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. We already have a buzz around the classroom as I set the children a half term project all about the Stone Age. I am really looking forward to see what the children come up with! This is due in on Wednesday 4th November.

Thank you for a wonderful first half term Year 3! I hope you have a lovely rest and you are ready for more learning and fun next half term!

WB 12/10/2015

We’ve had a super week in Year 3 this week!

The highlight of our week was definitely our Autumn walk around the school grounds. It was a beautiful Autumn day so we went on a walk to discuss what we could see. We could see lots of birds, crisp, orange leaves and much to Year 3’s delight, lots of conkers! We then used our walk as a stimulus for a creative write session and wrote poems about what we could see and hear. The poems are beautiful and we are sharing some with you in our Harvest Assembly. There is also a selection of our poems on display in the hall- take a look when you are walking past!

In Maths this week, we have learnt how to use the column method to add 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have explored different methods for addition and we decided that we prefer the column addition method as it is speedier than some of the others. We can now confidently carry over the ones and the tens. Well done Year 3!

In Topic this week, we learnt about the Greek Olympics. We discussed why it was such an important event and how it has influenced our lives today. The children devised role plays of news reports all about how amazing the original Ancient Greek Olympics were. Some children even saw a javelin flying through the air! We also plotted dates on a timeline, which was a little tricky as we needed to use our Maths skills too and order 3 digit numbers!

The children are working really hard on our Harvest Assembly and they can’t wait for their family members to come and see it. Their behaviour has been outstanding when rehearsing and it is looking and sounding amazing! Please continue to bring your donations in to class as they will be going to a great cause.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 5/10/2015

Year 3 have been very healthy and fit this week to celebrate Health and Wellbeing Day!

First, we created an information text all about being healthy and fit. The children were able to say lots about the benefits of being healthy and things that we can do to stay healthy. They used subheading s and headings in their work, and made sure that they used an informative voice for their audience. We also created poems all about sports stars which included similes. I was really pleased with the writing the children produced. The children are showing progress already and it is brilliant to see! There are some pictures of our impressive, fantastic writing below.

We also created posters to advertise how to be healthy and eat our 5 a Day. These are on display in the classroom and are colourful and bright, as well as promoting a healthy message.

In our Science lesson, we used standard units (seconds) to measure how long it took us to run from one side of the playground and back. We timed each other and then showed our results in a frequency chart and then a pictogram.

In Maths, we have been learning how to do column addition and carry over the 1s. This is the homework this week so please encourage your children to write the little 10 (baby 10) underneath the tens column. This helps them visualise the 10 and not just call it a 1.

In English, our Marvel newspaper unit is creating lots of excitement in our classroom! We have been creating narratives for still images, considering what we think might have happened before that picture and what might happen next. We have also been using powerful verbs to describe The Fantastic Four. I am really looking forward to exploring newspapers more next week.

Letters have gone out tonight inviting parents/family members/carers to come and watch Year 3 and Year 4’s Harvest Assembly. We would love to see you there. As part of the assembly, we are also doing a harvest collection and donating it to Trussel Trust. If you would like to donate, please bring your tins/cans etc into the class teachers.

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 28/09/2015

We’ve had a lovely week in Year 3 this week!

In English, we have been looking at words that the author uses and we have been discussing them in partners. We looked through Horrid Henry books and we quickly realised that Francesca Simons is a fantastic author who uses amazing vocabulary! We created some bright, colourful wow word posters to help us improve our vocabulary in our writing. We have also been editing text to improve it and we are very good at editing text as we can really improve other people’s writing!

In Maths, we have been exploring adding 1s, 10s and 100s to 3 digit numbers mentally. We are really enjoying using the manipulatives to help us and we get really excited over finding new methods to solve problems, which is brilliant to see! Keep up the good work Year 3! We will move on to more formal methods of addition next week.

In Science we explored our bodies and our heart rates through a P.E based science lesson. We learnt that the more our bodies move, the faster our heartbeat is.

In Topic, the children researched facts about Ancient Greece using a variety of resources. The children loved being fact finders and found some amazing facts!

Our Year 3 and 4 Harvest Assembly is Wednesday 21st October at 2.30pm. We would love to see you there supporting the children.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 21/07/2015

We have had another brilliant week this week!

The highlight of our week was definitely our trip to Clonter Opera. We had such a fantastic day! We took part in a Musical Theatre Workshop and watched a brilliant operatic show. We finished the day off by watching a performance in the theatre. It was a great experience for all. The staff at the workshops couldn’t believe that our children were in Year 3 as they were so well behaved so well done Year 3!

In English, we have continued our work on Horrid Henry’s Underpants and the class are loving the text, particularly the boys! We predicted what might happen next in the text and performed role plays showing our predictions. We also created our own character using alliteration, mine was called Bossy Bella! Next week, we will be writing a chapter including our new characters. I’m really looking forward to reading them!

In Maths, we have been counting on in 4s and 8s from any given number. This is quite tricky and we had to make sure that we were using our fingers to help us so we didn’t miss any numbers or add any on! We have also been using our problem solving skills to solve logic problems. Again, this is quite tricky as you have to think logically and be patient! We have really tested our mathematicians this week!

In Science, we learnt about the muscular system, particularly the muscles surrounding the elbow joint. We created our own muscles and described how our biceps and triceps contract and relax when moving.

In Computing, we created our own surveys using a rating scale on word. We asked questions about school and used our word processing skills. We will continue to explore surveys next week.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

WB 14/09/2015

What a great week we’ve had in Year 3!

We have continued our work on Horrid Henry and we have been exploring speech this week. We have deepened our knowledge on using inverted commas to show speech and we have been exploring ways to make our speech more interesting.

In Maths, we have been adding 10/100 and taking away 10/100 from 3 digit numbers. We are really showing progress with this which is great! We have also been counting in 50s! If you could practise this at home with your child, that would be great!

In Science, we learnt all about our skeletons. We named bones and learnt why our skeleton is important. We know that our skeleton is important as it protects us, gives us shape and allows us to move.

In Topic, we compared England to Greece. We used our Maths skills to create a venn diagram comparing the two countries. We found that although England and Greece are very different, they are also very similar.

Thank you to all parents/carers who attended the Year Ahead Meeting. It was lovely to meet you all. As discussed, please feel free if you have any queries or worries at all.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 3 Team

Don't forget

Clonter Opera - The trip is on Friday 25th September. We have asked that children come to school for 8.30 otherwise we will not make it to the theatre in time. Please return the signed permission slip with the money enclosed. If you have any problems, do not hesitate to come and see me.

WB 07/09/2015

What a brilliant week Year 3 have had! This week, we started our English unit, Horrid Henry and we have loved reading the book 'Horrid Henry's Underpants' so far! We think Francesca Simon is a brilliant author! We have learnt how to write 2A sentences. These are sentences which have two adjectives separated by a comma before the noun. Year 3 have learnt that these are really helpful in writing as they add lots more description to their work. I am looking forward to reading more of these in your writing!

We also went to the library this week and we were lucky enough to meet actual Horrid Henry! He was particularly cheeky and we found him very funny. We talked about the books that are written about him and asked questions to further our understanding of the texts. It was a lovely morning and the children were so well behaved. The librarian commented on how respectful and polite they were so well done Year 3!

In Maths, we have been decomposing 3 digit numbers using number bond diagrams. We have been counting on in 100s, 10s and 1s and the children are showing lots of progress through this weeks learning already.

We started our Topic this week which is Greece. We discussed why Greece is such a popular holiday destination and located Greece on a map. We designed posters advertising Greece and the children created some wonderful pieces of work.

We also began our Science topic and this week we looked at a healthy, nutritious diet. The children learnt the names of some food groups and we designed a menu for an athlete. Why not test your child on what food groups they are eating for their evening meal?

In computing, we are exploring surveys and this week we thought of themes that could be used in a survey and questions to ask around those themes. We will be looking into this further next week.

Thank you, Year 3, for a great week in school!

Have a lovely weekend,

Welcome to Year 3!

We have had a fantastic week getting to know each other and I have been very impressed with my new Y3 class already!

We have had lots of fun and we have also been working very hard! The children showed off their writing skills in their first creative writing piece. We wrote all about flying turtles and we were very creative with our ideas! Well done Year 3!

We have also created our own little books all about us. The children wrote the blurb, designed the front cover and then we wrote two chapters inside. They are going to go on display in our Reading Corner.

I have sent out Year Overview letters and an information sheet all about Year 3. The children were given an individual reading book which has been matched to their reading ability, a choice book from our library and their new reading record. All three of these books need to be brought into school daily and then taken home each night. Please read with your child for 10 minutes each night and sign when you have done so as we keep a log of this in class.

Important Reminders:

Library Trip - Thursday 10th September. Please bring in your permission slip.

Year Ahead Meeting - Wednesday 16th September. I am looking forward to meeting you all properly.

Homework is given out on a Friday and is to be returned the following Wednesday or before. The weekly spelling test will be held on Fridays. There is no need to bring in the spellings before then as your child will need to practise.

Class Dojos: I have sent out a letter asking you to join Class Dojos. It is a free APP and you are able to track your child's behaviour in school. The children love it and can't wait for you to join!
