Week beginning 17.07.17

Our final week in Year was amazing!

We had lots of fun on Wednesday and Thursday when we had a little party and watched a movie in class. The children's manners were impeccable and I am so very proud of their progress this year. They should all be very proud of their efforts in Year 3.

Thank you to all of you for your support and throughout my time in Year 3 with your children, I was blown away by all of the gifts and very thoughtful cards. From the three of us I would like to say a HUGE thank you.

I hope you all enjoy the summer break and I wish the children all the best as they move into Year 4!

Week beginning 10.07.17

Wow I cannot believe that we only have one more week left in Year 3!

This week in maths we have been looking at shapes and lines and identifying parallel and perpendicular lines. We have been working on our own definitions to explain these types of lines and we now know that it is very useful to name lines in order to describe them effectively and efficiently. The children have loved searching for types of lines and shapes scattered around the classroom. We have completed our final Times Tables Challenge for Year 3 and I am very proud of the efforts made by each and every child in the class. Your hard work has certainly paid off, well done!

In English, we looked at the short Pixar movie 'Blue Umbrella' and we used a new approach to help us write descriptive and effective sentences. We explored various phrases using precise verbs and synonyms, looked at complex sentences and also complex sentences with subordinating conjunctions. We looked closely at using words in the correct context and learned some excellent new vocabulary that I am sure the children will all be able to use in Year 4.

In Art/D&T this week we looked at a number of different herbs. We enjoyed using our senses to match the herbs to their correct name. We worked hard smelling and touching the herbs, and realised that some were harder to identify than others. We struggled to name 'chives' until we broke them open and smelled them. We used our art skills to draw our own version of each herb and discussed what we use herbs for. We also enjoyed looking at strawberries and learned lots of new things about them. Did you know an average strawberry has approximately 200 seeds on it?

We had the pleasure of watching the Year 6 production of the Lion King this week and we LOVED it. The children were all excited thinking about what production they might be involved in when they get to Year 6!

We also loved our French Day when Mrs Fowler came in and taught us all how to say what our favourite hobby was. We also learned the colours and were able to use this knowledge to sing a short song. Afterwards, we were invited to watch an assembly led by Mrs Fowler and the Year 1 and 2s. This was a fabulous celebration of what the children have learned in such a short period of time.

We have had our last transition with Mrs Sharrocks today and we are all excited and eager to show off our amazing skills in September.

Attendance: 96.6%- winners this week, WELL DONE YEAR 3!

Despite it nearing the end of the academic year it is still very important to maintain a high attendance.

ALL CLUBS ARE NOW FINISHED.

Have a great weekend.

Week beginning 03.07.17

Another great week completed in Year 3!

In Maths this week we have been learning more about angles, and we have been identifying the many angles that are found in our capital letters. We have also been working on measurements and looking closely at what units we use to measure capacity, length and weight. The children have been busy converting various measurements from one unit into another and then using these skills to solve some tricky word problems.

In History, we explored the laws and justice system from the Anglo-Saxon period. We looked at various scenarios and debated whether we though the punishment for the crime was 'fair' or 'foul'. We learnt that many of the laws are in deed very similar to what we have in modern day Britain, however, the punishments are very different. We all decided that we would not have enjoyed living in the Anglo-Saxon times in case we broke on of their laws.

In English, we have been using a range of images as our stimulus this week and it has been fabulous to watch the children use their excellent literacy skills to create narratives from one image. Their imaginations are fantastic and they loved creating their own characters and ideas for their story.

This week was quite exciting for Year 3 as we enjoyed an activity filled session with Sandra from Christ Church and also had the pleasure of listening to and celebrating the many musical talents across the school. Many of children took part in this celebration and it was wonderful to see so much progress being made. It was lovely to watch Year 4 playing their brass instruments as this is a session that our Year 3s will get to enjoy next year.

Attendance: 96.6%- winners this week, WELL DONE YEAR 3!

Despite it nearing the end of the academic year it is still very important to maintain a high attendance.

Week beginning 26.06.17

We have had a lovely week in Year 3 this week!

In Maths we started our new unit and we are now learning all about angles. We have been working on identifying angles and we now know that 2when two straight lines meet at a point they make a right angle. We also explored right angles and tried her hardest to spot as many of them as possible around our classroom. The children also learnt what we call angles that are smaller than a right angle and angles that are bigger than a right angle. Year 3 can you tell your parents what these are called?

In English, we carried learning about how to write a good newspaper report. We worked very hard on stretching our sentences in order to make them better. We also took on the role of newspaper reporters to gather eye-witness statements about the incident for our reports. The children were excited to get their newspaper reports completed and I must say I am super proud of their efforts. Their attitude towards their work is improving every day. Mrs Sharrocks is going to be so pleased to have you all in her class next year!

In History we have been learning all about the different aspects of life that the Vikings had. We looked at art & crafts, rhyme & writing, homes & food, clothes & jewellery, as well as religion and gods. The children displayed some fantastic teamwork by sharing their facts about each aspect and then creating a poster highlighting the various factors of their chosen aspect.

Thank you to everyone for the contributions towards the summer fair as we received a great collection again this morning! Also thank you to the extra money that we received for the sponsored spin.

Week beginning 19.06.17

We have all had a busy but very exciting week in Year 3!

As a school we celebrated Cultural Week, with each class choosing a different culture to explore and learn about. We chose Australia and have loved every bit of learning about the country, its famous landmarks and cities. We also put our Art skills to the test when we recreated some Aboriginal art. The children loved doing this and enjoyed trying to add in lots of different colours. We also rolled up our sleeves and enjoyed a D&T lesson which involved us making lamingtons and Anzac biscuits, both favourite desserts in Australia.

Emma took us for a dance lesson and we explored some Aboriginal dancing and music and listened to some famous songs associated with Australia. We had a didgeridoo in class and the children all loved trying to play it, which we found out was actually quite difficult.

We finished the week off by hosting an Australian themed restaurant with Koala milkshake, kangaroo burger, crocodile tail all on the menu for the diners. The children enjoyed watching the BBQ sizzle and all worked hard to present our restaurant in the best manner possible. Well done everyone!

Thank you to everyone that brought in Australian paraphernalia, it all helped in making our classroom look very authentic.

This week we also took part in a sponsored spin with Year 3 trying to keep their spinners going for 20 minutes. Super effort everyone and thank you everyone that has brought in sponsorship money. It is all going towards a Forrest School area for the school which will be very beneficial for all ages. If you have money and forgot to bring it in then please drop into school next week at some point.

Thank you to everyone for the contributions towards our summer fair. We received a great collection this morning!

Week beginning 12.06.17

What a good week we have had in Year 3!

In English we continued with our Newspaper Reports unit. We looked at the difference between fact and opinion and the impact these features have when included in a newspaper report. We also learned a new skill and can now confidently include a range of drop in relative clauses in our writing. The children transformed their simple sentences into more interesting ones and were all very proud of their work.

In History we explored some Anglo-Saxon kings, looked at how they influenced Britain and how they fought against the Vikings. We discovered different facts about King Alfred and King Athelstan and discussed whether we thought that King Athelstan was as great as King Alfred.

In Maths this week we have been working on our Money unit and mastering the skills involved in solving word problems involving money. The children have been working through solving a range of word problems using a column method as well as a counting on/back strategy. We have also been revising some of our basic arithmetic skills.

This week we have had a wonderful time producing art work that is to be displayed at the town hall for the LSCB Voice of the Child competition. Although we have worked on our own individual pieces, they will all fit together to make one very creative piece of work. It is our representation of the shared values thought of by the Voice of the Child which are; respect, equality, trust, politeness, tolerance, listening and kindness. The children have all put amazing effort into this and I'm sure it will look fantastic once completed.

Year 3 have enjoyed two more transition sessions with Mrs. Sharrocks this week. They are all enjoying these sessions and getting to know their new surroundings for when they come back in September.

Our class photo is displayed on the window for anyone that would like a better look before they commit to ordering one. The deadline for ordering a copy is Friday 23rd June.

Attendance: 95.51%, I hope we can do better next week!

Week beginning 05.06.17

We have had a very exciting week back in Year 3!

To link with our new topic in History we visited the World Museum in Liverpool on Tuesday, where we got to take part in a very interesting workshop. The children got to examine Anglo-Saxon and Viking artefacts, try on some Viking clothing and handle Viking helmets and swords. Afterwards, we spent some time exploring what the museum had to offer. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I would highly recommend you visit if you have not been before. There is no entrance fee, which is of course a bonus!

In English we started our Newspaper Reports unit. We looked at the various features that can be found in a report and looked at a number of different reports written by a range of newspapers. We concentrated on creating our own catchy headlines and making them stand out in order for them to appeal to the reader. We will continue to work our way towards writing our very own report in the coming weeks.

On Thursday, we had some very intriguing guests visiting Year 3. Rob came to speak to us about his birds of prey. They were absolutely spectacular and the children learnt some amazing acts about the animals. Year 3 certainly did not let the school down and were impeccably behaved throughout the visit. Rob also commented on the 'intelligent' questioning that came from everyone. We are very proud of you all!

In Computing, we started working on a computing project. The children got into teams and decided on a topic that would like to research. They then organised themselves by deciding on what information they would like to include, as well as giving each other certain responsibilities for the project to run smoothly. I cannot wait to see the final product as each team seems to be very passionate about their topic. The children are going to use all of the computing skills learnt throughout the year to help them complete the project.

Our class photo is displayed on the window for anyone that would like a better look before they commit to ordering one. The deadline for ordering a copy is Friday 23rd June.

Attendance: 98.62%, winners again this week! Well Done!

What a fabulous week it has been in Year 3!

We have been working very hard this week in particular on our writing skills. We have all written some amazing narratives, thinking carefully about what literacy skills we have learnt so far in year 3. The children are all making excellent choices in terms of grammar and vocabulary and challenging themselves to use more ambitious words all the time. We are very proud of you all.

Dancers from KS2 took part in the Dance Festival held at the Theatre Royal in St. Helens this week and it was such a fantastic night. Each child put their heart and soul into the performance and they made Grange Valley very proud to have them as students. The children performed in the first half and then had the pleasure of sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the second half performers. I am already looking forward to going again next year.

Sport's Day was a great success and it was clear that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a tiring afternoon for the children but they put their all into each race despite the very hot weather. It was fantastic to see and hear so much encouragement for one another and the team spirit throughout the afternoon was excellent. Well done everyone, and in particular well done to the overall winners on the day, the Blue team.

Year 3 took the attendance top spot this week........I knew we would get there at some point! Great teamwork everyone!

Attendance: 100%

Week beginning 15.05.17

This week in Maths we started our chapter on Money. We were working out how to make up certain amounts using different coins and notes. The children also started adding money together by grouping the pounds and the pence together. They all worked superbly this week showing off their existing money knowledge.

In English this week we looked very closely at tricky homophones, and they children all used dictionaries to locate the meaning of these words. It was great to then see the new vocabulary being used in their writing in other lessons.

The children were busy investigating the how water is transported in plants this week in Science. They all had to set up an investigation looking at the important questions, the equipment that would be needed, the procedure they would need to follow and also what their predictions would be. The celery awaits them next week to see what the outcome has been.

We availed of the nice weather this week and got outside for our PE lesson. We even managed to have a little practice for Sport’s Day. The children were all super excited and they can’t wait to get into their groups and work as a apart of team next week.

Attendance: 97.24%, we finished second this week, well done!

Week beginning 08.05.17

In Maths this week we have been doing more work on our time unit and we have been working hard on solving word problems involving time. The children are really starting to master the various ways that we can tell the time, using analogue and digital clocks. They have learned how to use timelines in order to help them solve word problems and they are all a lot more confident in reading the clock after all of our hard work throughout lessons.

In English lessons this week we continued to look at 'Grandpa's Great Escape'. The children created questions and got into role as Grandpa where they asked questions in order to gain a better understanding of a character and how they might have been feeling. The children further developed including character's feelings in their writing by retelling the story of 'The Peculiar Doll Shop'. I am so pleased with the work produced today in class. Keep up the super efforts Year 3!

Our Geography lesson this week allowed us to look to our Atlases again. We had to search the atlases for certain hills and mountains located in different areas of the UK. The children were all able to describe where the hills were using the 8 points of the compass. Can any of you remember where the highest peak is located?

The children produced some amazing paintings in Art this week. They used their sketchbook entries from previous weeks to assist them and they used paint carefully and attentively when painting their pieces. We now have a number of washing lines in class full of fabulous paintings.

Attendance: 97.24% an improvement on last week, well done everyone!

What a lovely short week we have had in Year 3 this week!

In English, we carried on looking at significant authors, this time concentrating on David Walliams. The children were all very excited to read some of his fabulous work and couldn’t wait to tell me how funny they found him when watching him on TV. We used Grandpa’s Great Escape to tell us reinforce the punctuation of speech and also had fun using dictionaries to find the meaning of new words.

In Maths we continued with our unit on Time. Our Time Monitors have been doing a great job and I am super proud of them. We worked through some word problems involving the measurement of time in minutes and hours. Keep up the enthusiastic work Year 3!

We took advantage of the beautiful weather this week and took our Art lesson outside. The children’s artistic side was shining bright as they used various fruit and veg to show colour in their sketch books.

Week beginning 24.04.17

What a great first full week back in school Year 3!

In Maths this week we started looking at our unit on Time. As adults we take for granted how tricky it is to tell the time. The children have been working extremely hard to master this concept and we will continue to look at this for the next coming weeks. Any extra support that you can provide to your child at home would be very much appreciated.

Our English lessons had us looking at another book by Anthony Browne, Into the Forest. This book had various sections that were similar to that of other common stories that the children had read at a younger age. The children wrote a diary entry in the first person and concentrated on including fronted adverbials to make their writing more interesting.

Following on with our Art unit based on Fruit and Vegetables, we were working with clay this week. The children created a pepper sculpture out of clay based on their observational drawing from last week. Although, it was quite difficult to manipulate the clay into the desired shapes, the children portrayed a wonderful growth mind-set, persevering and not giving up. We had some excellent final products.

In Science Year 3 looked at the question ‘What do plants need to grow well?’ and they set up an investigation to find out what plants need to grow well. We learned that air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow are all requirements for a plant to grow. I can’t wait to see what recordings you make through your observations.

Attendance: 96.60%, only slightly below the average this week!

Week beginning 18.04.17

What a lovely week we have had in Year 3 to kick start our Summer Term!

In Maths this week we enjoyed wrapping up our Fractions unit and it is clear from everyone’s work this week that a lot of progress has been made in this area. I am very proud of your attitude towards this unit, especially when we encountered some tricky problems. Next week sees us starting our chapter on Time.

English this week has involved us looking at stories written by Anthony Browne, and in particular ‘The Tunnel’. This story allowed us to look at a dilemma faced by one of the characters and we used a technique known as ‘Conscience Alley’ to help us analyse a decisive moment in greater detail. The children really enjoyed working in teams to get their point across.

Our Geography lesson this week was all about the countries and cities located in The UK. The children used atlases to locate various cities and then used the 8 points of a compass to describe their location in comparison to one another.

We used some fresh produce this week to help our drawing skills spring into action in Art, as we created some wonderful drawings of peppers. The children varied their techniques, using shading, and hard and soft lines to create their drawings. All children were able to draw in great detail as a result of taking things slowly and the constant looking at their item. Super work everyone!

Attendance: 98.27%, our best in a long time Year 3, well done!

Week beginning 27.03.17

What a lovely week we have had for our last one in this term!

In Maths this week we have continued with our fractions chapter, this time concentrating on solving word problems where more than one whole is being shared a number of people. The children were all super at this, almost making it look easy, well done everyone!

Our English's lessons this week were all centred around performance poetry, this time with the children using instruments to enhance their performances. They all put a lot of passion and enthusiasm into their performances and later they reflected on their work. They all gave very positive feedback to one another and it was fabulous to see how much the children try to motivate and improve one another's work.

As mini scientists this week we investigated what soil is made of. In this session the children used their fraction knowledge to work out the fraction of each component of soil. We got hands on and made our own compost bins, but instead of using wriggly worms we used something a little more appetizing. If you don't know already know ask the children about our red friends.

Art this week involved more maths, with the children working out the measurements of  their kites. They used a design criteria to work out what important aspects of their kite they need to concentrate on. They all came up with some very appealing designs. We didn't manage to make the kites this term but fingers crossed we will have time later this year!

A huge well done to the children that travelled to Finch Farm this week to compete in the Everton football tournament. Mr. Robinson said they should all be very proud of their efforts and that they came very close to playing during the half time of a game at Goodison Park. Finishing 3rd out of the schools in the North-West is a great achievement. Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to Mr. Robinson.

Thank you to all that came to the Easter Bingo this week, lots of prizes were won and there was a great atmosphere, we hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Attendance:96.89% this week. Maybe we can snatch a 1st in the Summer term.

Week beginning 20.03.17

We are edging closer to our Spring Break everyone!

This week in our Maths lessons we have been finding fractions of numbers, using our multiplication and division knowledge to help us work out the answers. The children are recognising the true importance of knowing our times tables off by heart as these are helping us throughout our fractions unit. The children are gaining more and more confidence as this unit progresses, keep up the super work everyone!

We have started looking at poems to perform this week and I must say that the enthusiasm shown by the children during their performances has been fabulous. As a class we created a success criteria and used this to help deliver the poem in the best possible way, concentrating on tone, volume and actions.

In History this week we learnt all about the Highway Man, that was Richard Turpin and we used many different sources of information to decide whether we thought he was a villain or a hero. We debated the evidence from the sources as a class, and it was very interesting to see the children developing their own opinions based on what they had read.

On Thursday two of our children attended the Children's University at Liverpool Hope. They were part of a graduation ceremony with many other children from the school to celebrate their attendance in after school clubs. Children's University gives children an opportunity to experience activities outside of every day school hours. A huge congratulations to Alexia and Emily for receiving a Bronze certificate.

A BIG thank you to all of your donations for Red Nose Day, there was a sea of red scattered across the school today.

Well done to our award winners this week: Gold: Aaron Vance, Silver: Ruby Gillman, Bronze: Megan Prescott

Attendance:97.24% this week. We have one more week to see if we snatch top place!

Week beginning 13.03.17

Another busy week in Year 3!

In History we were learning all about 'The Torturing Tudors' and looking at the various crimes and punishments associated with this time in history. We are now able to compare crimes and punishments in many different time periods and in particular talk about the differences that we notice about our modern day crimes and punishments. We were very lucky to have two visitors in this week to speak to the class about modern punishments and I know all of the children were excited to listen to the informative presentation.

Our English lessons continued with our Myths and Legends topics, where we worked on our descriptive writing to create and develop characters such as heros and mythical creatures. The children then used a plan to help them develop their plot before they wrote their very own Myth.

The children's efforts in Maths this week has been fabulous. They are thoroughly enjoying our fractions unit as they begin to gain more confidence and knowledge in the topic. We have worked through equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and then using addition and subtraction to work out word problems.

A huge thank you to all that came to parent's evening this week, it was great to see so many of you. Anyone that has not managed to make their appointment please message me to arrange an alternative time.

Attendance:98.6% this week, another improvement this week Year 3:-)

We are already half way through this half term, can you believe it?

In Science this week the children have been learning more about rocks. They have been grouping rocks based on their properties and have learnt lots of new vocabulary to go on our Science display. In groups the children examined and tested a range of rocks to see if they were permeable or durable. Try testing your child out to see if they can explain the difference between permeable and durable.

Our History lesson allowed us to look back in time to see what types of laws and punishments existed in Anglo-Saxon Britain. The children were then able to note differences between Roman, Modern British and Anglo-Saxon punishments. This led onto some role playing where the children had to debate their case in front of a jury, using facts and reasons as to why their desired punishment should stand. This was very enjoyable to watch.

English lessons this week have concentrated on developing our myths and legends knowledge in order to build up a varied vocabulary that is linked to the particular themes seen in well know myths. They have learnt the importance of understanding whether they should be writing in the first person or else the third person and I am very proud of their progress in this. Super efforts from the children in terms of their handwriting this week. Keep it up, as we still have quite a number of pen licences to give out.

In Maths we have continued to work on our fractions chapter, learning more ways to work out equivalent fractions by using both multiplication and division knowledge. These times tables just keep cropping up, showing us the importance of knowing them off by heart.

Any parents that have not arranged a parent's evening time with me please can you contact me as soon as possible so I can make arrangements to meet with you.

Attendance:97.50% this week, we are starting to creep closer to 1st place Year 3 :-)

Week beginning 27.02.17

Another busy week completed in Year 3.

In Maths we have continued to work fractions, learning about equivalent fractions and how we can use pictures to identify fractions that are the same, even though they have a different fraction name. We have also recognised that patterns exist when forming equivalent fractions and we have been able to use our multiplication knowledge to help us out.

This week in English we were introduced to Myths and Legends. We read a number of versions of popular myths and we identified the common features found in these as a class. We started using our knowledge of conjunctions and powerful verbs to write descriptive pieces about characters and magical objects that might be found in these types of stories. In celebration of World Book Day the children were given time to write their very own story, and their imaginations went wild.

Computing this week involved re-ordering objects and shapes in various ways so that they made most sense. They worked with a number of pieces of paper first to order the pieces and then they peered assessed to give feedback to one another before they worked on a program on the computers. They produced some very interesting collages and were able to explain why one was in a better order than another.

We had the exciting responsibility this week of delivering an assembly to the rest of the school. The children worked extremely hard to learn their lines and dance moves and I am very proud of them as I know it can sometimes be slightly nerve racking to stand up in front of so many people. Well done everyone! A big thank you to Emma for helping our dance and to Sandra for coming from the Church to help us with the information that we delivered.

Thank you to all parents that helped the children prepare for today's World Book Day, they all looked amazing.

Parents Evening times will be finalised on Tuesday and sent out that afternoon with the children.

Attendance: 95.32% this week.

Week beginning 20.02.17

We cannot believe that our first week back is over already!

We have had a fabulous time in English this week exploring the wonderful and exciting book 'The Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore'. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading and listening to the story as well as watching the short film, which in fact won an Academy award. It was using the interactive version of the book that truly inspired the children's writing throughout the week. They were mesmerised by what the app could do and this was very evident in their writing as they completed some fabulous descriptive pieces. They also wrote a persuasive letter about why the local library should not close down. The passion shown by the children in this lesson was simply mind-blowing. I think you might have some future debaters on your hands!

We started our Fractions unit this week and the children have all worked superbly identifying and naming fractions and then adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. We shared some bars of chocolates into fifths which was very exciting and resulted in the children licking their hands clean of melted chocolate.

The children have outdone themselves with what they produced for their project work on 'Crime and Punishment'. A huge thank you to all parents for their help as we know they took up some time to complete. This unit it very interesting and I know the children are all excited for future lessons. We even have some surprise guests coming in later on in the unit.

In Computing the children worked on developing their Drawing and Desktop Publishing skills by choosing appropriate shapes and lines to draw intended shapes. The children all worked through the given success criteria and created some very interesting styles of houses. I can't wait to see what they can produce next week.

Attendance: 96.60% this week, hopefully we can do better next week.

Week beginning 06.02.17

Our week in Year 3 has zoomed by us!

In English we completed our Playscripts unit where the children enjoyed improving a familiar playscript by using powerful verbs and adverbs. They also got into groups  of three where they practised a scene from The Twits before they performed it for their audience. They children put in a fabulous effort, acting out the dialogue with clear and loud voices. We had a lot of fun with this lesson, with some characters ending up rolling around the floor laughing.

On Tuesday we celebrated Safer Internet Day. We learnt about posting appropriate images and messages online, and how to remain safe when doing this. We discussed what to do if we came across something that upset us or that we thought was inappropriate. The class created some excellent posters about online safety and created a checklist of how to stay safe online.  We also got to have some fun in the Selfie Booth, using a check list to ensure our images were safe before putting them online.

Our exciting Art unit came to a messy end this week with the children using a classroom full of newspapers to create a 3D model of an insect that they had previously drawn in class. They all thought carefully about what size and shape the head, thorax and abdomen would be before they commenced. Some of the end products were superb.

Attendance: 95.67% this week, slightly up on last week. Lets all aim for 100% in the next half term!

Reminders

20.02.17- School reopens ( early morning interventions continue as normal)

03.03.17-World Book Day (children can dress up as book characters)

You are encouraged to read with your children as much as possible at home.

I hope you all enjoy the time off next week.

Miss Whelan and the Year 3 team.

Week beginning 30.01.17

Another fast week in Year 3.

This week in Maths we have been using our multiplication skills to solve problems involving the multiplication of 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. The children's times table knowledge has been benefiting them greatly. They are all starting to see the true importance of practising and learning their times tables.

English this week had us working more on playscripts. We were working together to write playscripts and investigate the power of adverbs when writing the stage directions for the cast. The children were able to create some super directions using very appropriate adverbs. Next week we are going to be looking at how verb choices can help improve directions and then hopefully we will be acting out our playscripts for the class.

We've had our last Fit4Life session this week and it was very enjoyable. The children all took part in some physical activities with the coaches and then sat back and relaxed with a healthy serving of fruit. Some children were very brave and tried some fruit that they had never eaten before.......and some even liked it.

In History we have been learning about the Iron Age and the how they lived back in that time. The children all got into character this week and acted as people such weavers, farmers, healers and druids in order to get a better understanding of what life was like in the Iron Age. To date in this unit they have learnt many new things about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

I want to mention how proud I am of the children for the hard work that put into their spelling test, a magnificent effort has been made and you should be very proud of yourselves. Keep up the great work Year 3!

Attendance this week was 95.32%. Can we do better next week?

Week beginning 16.01.17

Year 3 have had another good week this week.

Our English lessons have been very exciting with us learning about Playscripts and trying to fine tune our dialogue writing. We are aiming towards writing our very own script and then playing it out for the rest of the class. This not only allows us to practice our basic skills in English but it will also help us to gain confidence in delivering a piece of work to an audience.

In Maths we have been recognising when to use multiplication and division in certain problems and we have been pulling all of our knowledge together to create a family of multiplication and division equations for many different problems. We have completed our times tables challenge today and I am so pleased at the progress that is being made. Keep practising everyone!

We've had quite an active week again this week, having had a dance lesson on Monday, a cricket lesson on Tuesday and then we had the pleasure of the Fit 4 Life team coming into us yesterday. The Fit 4 Life team split the class into two groups whereby one group worked on developing rugby skills and the other group discussed the various amounts of sugar that are found in common foods. We all found this one very interesting and will certainly be thinking twice before tucking into a bag of skittles again.

The children amazed us during their Computing lesson as they created algorithms for drawing various shapes on the Turtle Logo program. They have been showing an amazing attitude during these lessons and trying their best to debug certain algorithms in order to work out what shape it might create. Who knows we might have a few future Programmers in our class ;-)

Attendance this week was 93.20%, which is above the weeks average but I know we can do better than that!

Week beginning 09.01.17

We have a busy but lovely week in Year 3 this week :-)

Our Maths lessons involved lots of multiplication this week, where we were concentrating on many of our times tables to help us solve the problems. The children are getting more and more competent when recognising the most efficient times table to use in order to solve the given problem. We know that multiplication can be done in any order. Can you remember what we call that law Year 3?

In English this week we have done some more very interesting work around the topic of Poetry. This week we modelled our work on a poem called The Magic Box by Kit Wright. The children were using their senses and imagination to create descriptive sentences for their poem.

Computing this week introduced the exciting topic of Programming. The children all got to grips with the first lesson very quickly and were able to create various shapes by setting commands for the program to follow. This was not an easy task as not only were they having to think about their forward movements but they were also having to work out the degree of the angle that the program needed to turn. Can you remember what degree you used to create your squares?

We have had a very active week with cricket, dance and a visit from the Fit4Life team. It has been fabulous to see everyone getting so involved, always being polite to our external coaches and always trying their best even when they are finding somethings hard. Our growth mindsets are certainly growing, keep it up Year 3.

Attendance this week was 94.22%, let's aim to improve this next week Year 3.

Week beginning 03.01.17

A HUGE welcome back to everyone.

Our first week back has been short but busy for Year 3.

We settled straight back in routines this week and kicked off with a new chapter in Maths. Year 3 are now concentrating on Multiplication. The children have worked hard to show off the different methods they like to use when working out our In Focus problems, and were able to talk about the most efficient method to use.

In English we have been doing some more work around our topic of Poetry and the children created some amazing Minibeast poems. They then went on to improve some of their vocabulary in the poems before they delivered their poem to the class. I was very proud of how much effort they put into making their poem appealing for their audience. Well done everyone.

Our new History topic revolves around 'Who lived in Britain first?' and in our first session we learnt about the Stone Age. The children should be able to tell you many details about the Stone Age such as what they ate, how they communicated and what they wore, amongst plenty of more interesting facts.

We ended our first week back with a fabulous celebration assembly based around Grange Valley's 'OUTSTANDING' achievement from OFSTED. The children had already prepared wonderful messages and these were attached to balloons which were left off into the sky today. We have already had some emails from people in Bolton, amongst other places, saying they've found a balloon and sending their congratulations to us all.

Attendance this week was 96%, let's aim to improve this next week Year 3.

Week beginning 12.12.16

What an amazing week we've had in a Year 3.

We kicked off our last week of term with some fabulous performances of our KS2 Polar Express production. The children all worked very hard to put on a wonderful show and based on the smiles and happy tears from the audience it is safe to say that it was a huge success. The children showcased their talents and made the school very proud. well done to everyone involved and thank you to the families that came to watch.

Our festivities continued as the children enjoyed their KS2 Christmas party. They worked up an appetite dancing and singing around the hall before tucking into some wonderful food provided by the parents.

Our Choir and Dance groups added some Christmas sparkle during the week as they entertained onlookers at Christ Church and Heyeswood, once again doing Grange Valley very proud.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for the many donations they've provided, from money to food to fixing props, as well as taking the time to come and watch the various performances, this time of year would not go as smoothly without your help.

We were also blown away by all of the gifts from you this week, from the three of us in Year 3 THANK YOU so much xx

We hope you all have a fabulous, fun filled festive period.

Warmes wishes from Miss Whelan , Mrs Larner and Mrs Taylor xxx

Week beginning 05.12.16

Another weeks passes us by as we edge closer to our Christmas break.

Year 3 enjoyed a fabulous start to the week with a surprise visit from Father Christmas at our tree lighting ceremony. Thank you to all for coming along and I hope you enjoyed the afternoon as much as the children did.The children were all very proud to show off their wonderful singing voices.

All of KS2 have been very busy practising for the performances of The Polar Express next week, we cannot wait for you all to see it. A reminder that children have been asked to wear pjs for the performances and they need to be back in school at approx 5.40pm in time to get ready for the 6pm performance on Monday. We do still have tickets available for all performances, so please spread the word, it would be amazing for the children to perform to a full hall.

We enjoyed a great afternoon at Christ Church this week, where Sandra very kindly put on a wealth of activities for the children to enjoy and also gave them lots of information concerning the Nativity. We were also very lucky to have her join us in school today for a Christingle assembly. Children and adults thoroughly enjoyed it and learned from it.

International Mountian Day 2016 was a huge success in Grange Valley. The efforts made by children throughout the school were amazing. Well done everyone.

Attendance was 92.47% this week, only one more week in 2016 to hit the top spot year 3, can ew do it?

Week beginning 28.11.16

This week has gone extremely fast for Year 3.

In Maths this week we have been concentrating on using the 'Bar Model' to solve simple and more complicated problems. The children have been working very hard to draw their bar models and they have been using their column method knowledge to assist them in solving the problems. They have also been concentrating on their handwriting when explaining the methods that they've used. Super effort in Maths this week Year 3.

In Literacy we have been using the very.co.uk advert as a stimulus for our writing. The children used their FANTASTICS to develop sentences and used some powerful adjectives in their writing to add as much detail as possible. We have a little visitor in our class at the moment, her name is Lilly. She has started leaving letters for us but they have LOTS of mistakes in them, so Year 3 have decided that they are going to help Lilly to improve her writing. They helped her to choose the correct homophones this morning and reminder her to include question marks and a capital letter for her name.

What an exciting Science lesson we had with Mrs Fowler this week. The children have been learning about Light and this week they investigates which materials block light to form shadows. They tested different materials to help them choose the best material for new curtains in a baby's room. I wonder how many of the children can explain what the word 'opaque' means?

The school enjoyed an afternoon of fun on Thursday. First of all we were treated to a surprise visit from Ethan. Everyone was so happy to see your big smile, we are super proud of how brave you have been and we cannot wait to have you back in class. We then spent the afternoon giggling at the pantomime.

Attendance this week was 96.94%, an improvement on last week but hopefully we can improve a bit more and compete for the top position next week!!!

Week beginning 21.11.16

Another busy and exciting week in Year 3.

In Maths we extended our knowledge of solving subtraction problems. Children all displayed growth mindsets when they encountered a few tricky problems involving multiples of 100. The encouraged one another and recalled as many methods as they could to help them work out the most efficient way of solving each problem. We also revisited how to use the Bar Model to help us solve addition and subtraction problems.

Our Literacy sessions this week brought us to the end of our 'Non-Chronological Report' unit. The children eagerly worked on planning, writing and critiquing their reports. They used a checklist created by the class to assist them in writing up their reports. Their informative and well structured reports are now displayed on our classroom wall.

Design Technology brought a very exciting lesson this week. Before this week the children had carried out some product analysis as well as deciding on the designs they would like on their juggling balls. This week we put our gloves and aprons on to tie-dye our material. The children were all very attentive and used a range of techniques to produce some colourful eye-catching pieces. I cannot wait to see the final product.

A huge thank you to you all for your generosity this week. We received a fabulous range of bottles this morning and our class shoe boxes were sent off full to the brim with presents that will without a doubt brighten up many children's festive period.

It was great to meet more of you this week and talk to you about the children's progress. For anyone that has not managed to meet me, please feel free to contact me to arrange a meeting at your convenience.

Week beginning 14.11.16

What a busy week we have had in Year 3 this week!

On Monday we held a Singapore Maths workshop for parents and it was amazing to see so many of you. The children were all extremely excited to show off their maths skills and explain the different methods that they use to solve Maths problems. We are still concentrating on Addition and Subtration, with this week's focus being on subtracting two and three digit numbers and regrouping 10's and 100's. This was not an easy task to begin with but through lots of perseverance and practice our understanding is growing in this area. Keep up the good work everyone! A huge thank you to Miss Kelly who led and supported us during the workshop.

In Literacy we have almost come to the end of our work on 'Non- chronological Reports' and the children have been working very hard creating their own reports about an animal of their choice. Some of the reports are fantastic and would appeal to readers of almost all ages. Next week we will be critiquing one another's reports. The children have thoroughly enjoyed this topic and have learned so much. We are reading Fanstasic Mr. Fox as our class novel and we were delighted to hear some of the children taking the hot seat as the 'Storyteller,' even Scooby got involved.

This week's History session involved the children taking on the role of certain characters from the Roman Era. This was a fun session where the children learned facts about characters before introducing themselves to the class. They learned how many different people were affected during 'Boudicca' s Rebellion.' They took on their roles wonderfully and passionately. Certainly a few children made for stage work based on what we witnessed :-)

The Shoe Box Appeal still needs your help, the boxes will be collected on Thursday morning. Please bring in gifts and a 50p donation.

Our attendance has dipped a bit this week, but Year 3 are determined to improve on this and challenge for the top spot!
