Welcome to Year 3 - Miss Brown's Class 2018-19

Summer 1

Our last term as Year 3 in Grange Valley has been very busy. We are almost ready to start Year 4 with our impressive Key Stage 2 knowledge, skills and maturity.

In our Maths lessons, we have been learning how to tell the time more accurately; including 5 minute and 1 minute intervals and digital time. This has been challenging, but the children have shown incredible persistence and determination. As part of this, we have been developing our team working skills when making clocks using hula hoops, digit cards and counters. Then, we challenged each other to set different times on our hand made clocks.

As part of our English lessons, we have been telling the TRUE story of The Three Little Pigs. Is the  Big Bad Wolf really that bad? All of the children have used this topic to show off all that they have learnt this year. They were able to use amazing adjectives, super similes and lots of conjunctions in their own independent piece of writing about Little Red Riding Hood's lies! We have also performed and written our own performance poetry in the style of Michael Rosen. We used rhyme, rhythm and alliteration to perform these to the rest of the class.

In our Science lessons, we have been learning about Rocks and the Stone Age. We have  carried out lots of practical experiments to help with out learning. In science, we carried out a property investigation and we made chocolate rocks and chocolate soil to help to explain  the difference between Metamorphic, Sedimentary and Igneous rocks and the properties of soil.  Our History Topic has been Stone Age. We have enjoyed learning about Stone Age life.  Have you ever wondered what life would be like during this time? We planned, designed and made our own Stone Age tribe camps on the school field; thinking about practicalities such as shelter, protection, food and water. We also designed and built our own stone age homes using only recyclable and natural resources.

This term, we have become very interested in our  local community. We were excited about being selected for the local coin collections in Tesco and have taken an active part in promoting our cause! We enjoyed our walk to Wood pit and Lyme with our new local ranger Scott where we spotted local inhabitants and spread seeds and picked litter to keep our environment clean. We are also excited to start our own Bird Watching Club!!
