Welcome to Year 1

Mrs Liptrot's Class

W.C 06.10.2023

We hope you had a lovely half term break and are ready for another busy half term in Year 1 with lots of exciting things planned!

This week we have continued to focus on addition in maths, learning all about number stories using real objects.

In Literacy, we were so excited to find clues around our classroom. With the help from the clues, we discovered that our text is 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We discussed the text and ordered the story before writing sentences to re-tell the story. We also became traditional tale detectives! In groups, we investigated different traditional tales to compare and contrast story language, good and bad characters, beginnings using ‘Once upon a time’, settings, happy endings etc.

We were introduced to our Science topic of 'Animals'. The children worked hard to sort the animals into the groups; mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.

We hope you have a lovely weekend. See you on Monday : )

W.C 23.10.2023

What a busy final week we have had before we enjoy our half term break.

We have been focusing on Poetry in English and we have completed some fantastic Autumn senses poems. We thought about what we can see, hear and feel during Autumn and used an adjective to describe this such as 'I can see damp leaves', 'I can hear crunching leaves' and 'I can feel spikey conker husks'.

We took a short walk to Haydock Library this week to take part in a session on Poetry. The children were fantastic during their walk and were very sensible during our time at the library.

In Maths we have started work on addition, writing addition number sentences and using a number line to count on.

In Art we completed our unit on colour mixing by focusing on Clarice Cliff. We created some fantastic colour plate designs!

This month we have celebrated Black History Month by raising awareness throughout the month of October. We took part in an assembly where each class sang a song by an influential black artist. Year 1's artist was Beyonce. The children loved learning facts about Beyonce as well as learning her song 'Listen'.

We hope you have a wonderful half term break and a well deserved rest. We will see you when we return on Monday 6th November!

W.C 16.10.2023

This week we worked together to make a rain gauge to measure the weather. We monitored this throughout the week and found that there has been 5cm of rain throughout the week at Grange Valley!

We enjoyed taking part in team games, using our listening skills, spatial awareness and dodging skills to avoid being caught by the fox.

We explored colour mixing and were inspired by Jasper John’s ‘Numbers in Colour’ painting. We thought about the numbers we could see in the piece as well as the colours. We used primary colours to make secondary colours when creating our wonderful designs.

During our computing session, we discussed who could help us online and how we can communicate online. We composed our first virtual email draft and discussed how once we post or send something we lose control of it. The children were fantastic at following the instructions to complete our virtual workbook.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

This week in Year 1 we have been discussing climates across the world and comparing countries with hot climates and cold climates in Geography.

In our Science lessons we have been learning about what animals do in Winter to survive. We found out that some animals hibernate, some migrate and some adapt according to their surroundings. I wonder if the children can remember examples of these animals?

In Maths we focussed on number bonds. We looked at how a number is made up of other numbers
and used a number bond/part-whole diagram to display the various ways of making a number.

In Art we enjoyed we applied our skills and knowledge from our previous sessions to draw from observation using various materials such as oil pastels, pencils and charcoal.

We also helped to spread positivity and happiness during World Mental Health Day by making positivity packs to post to the local community!

We hope you have a restful weekend.

W.C 02.10.2023

This week we have been using number lines to recognise one more and one less than a given number in Maths.

We were visited by Father Dan from St.Mark's Church, who talked to us about why Christians refer to God as a 'father'.

We completed continuous line drawings and experimented with different marks to show textures in our drawings.

In English we were introduced to our new text, 'Ruby's Worry' and have completed sentences to explain how Ruby was feeling and the actions she used to try to get away from her worries. We explored feelings and the signs that we see when someone is worried such as worried eyes, wobbly lips, holding tummies etc.

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

Mrs Liptrot and Miss Welding :)

W.C 25.09.2023

This week we have been comparing quantities in maths using the language more than, less than, equal to, greater and smaller.

We looked at creations by Kandinsky and other artists and created our own amazing abstract art pieces using various materials such as oil pastels, paints, pencils and crayons.

In English we have completed our text 'Lost and Found'. We used adjectives to describe the emotions of the characters at the end of the story such as 'relieved', ;''ecstatic' and 'cheerful'. We also got into the role of the characters and wrote a diary extract.

We were weather reporters this week and videoed each other delivering weather reports.

We also went on an Autumn walk to look out for the early signs of Autumn.

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

Mrs Liptrot and Miss Welding :)

What another busy week we have had settling into Year 1!

This week we have been continuing to develop our number skills from 0-10. We have been recognising and writing numbers as words and matching them to the correct numeral. We also explored the concept of 'zero' and what this represents when counting backwards.

In English we have been writing lists of all the things that we would pack in a suitcase if we were travelling to the South Pole, just like the characters in our text 'Lost and Found' did. We also used adventurous vocabulary when writing simile sentences to describe how high the waves were in the sea on our journey!

In P.E, we took worked on our teamwork during various games.

We were also inspired by the artist Zaria Forman this week. We listened to a piece of music, reflecting our feelings whilst producing some amazing group water creations using various line techniques.

We have done all of the above and so much more!

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

Mrs Liptrot and Miss Welding :)

Welcome to Year 1!
This week the children have settled very well into their first week in Year 1. As well as familiarising ourselves with the classroom routines and set up, we have started our Year 1 curriculum.

In English we have been focusing on the text 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. We have been sharing the text and beginning to think about captions to match to pictures from the text.

In Maths we have been reviewing our number skills to 10, ordering numbers, finding the missing number and counting objects accurately.

In Art, we took inspiration by the artist Bridget Riley, exploring line. We explored line using pencil, string and chalk before making a collaborative class masterpiece using our favourite line technique!

We have been learning all about the weather in Great Britain and how this changes over the seasons.

What a busy week! Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Liptrot and Miss Welding :)
