WB 19/02/24

The children have returned to school positively and are looking forward to the rest of their Y5  journey. We have seen some great attitudes to learning and the children are trying their best.

In History we started our new unit, learning all about Britain at war. We looked at how many wars Britain had been involved in before plotting them on a timeline. 

In PE we took part in our first dance lesson. The children looked at choreographing their own 8 piece dance 

In maths we looked at the relationship fractions, decimals and percentages have and started working really hard on our skills for working percentages of given numbers.

WB 05/02/24

In our final week of the half term, the children have finished their Maths chapter about decimals. In Geography, we finished looking at rainforests and the Awa tribe . During DT, we made Bolognese sauce, practicing our chopping skills. We linked our reading sessions to our diversity week theme and read a book called 'Uncle Bobby's wedding'. During PSHE, we looked at dreams and goals and created our own CV of things we have achieved. In English we completed a big write animal fact file about an anima which lives in the Amazon rainforest. We absolutely loved our silent disco on Thursday night! It was something a little different and the children (And staff) loved it!

WB 22/01/24

We have worked hard this week in Year 5.

In English we have started our new topic 'Rainforest creatures' to support our writing of non-chronological reports. We have been working hard to create the shape of our unit in order to help us. We are looking forward to completing these and even putting our creative side into our final piece.

In computing this week, we have been looking at the key vocabulary you need to know regarding STEM? The children have really enjoyed this unit to date and are looking forward to further developing their STEM knowledge and skills.

We had another great DT lesson this week as we discussed the effect of adapting a traditional recipe to make it healthier using the NHS eat well plate to help. 

 

In PE this week, we looked at developing catching with increasing consistency under pressure when playing dodgeball before playing a team colour dodgeball match.

WB 15/01/24

 

The children loved this week and made wonderful use of our fabulous school grounds having fun in the snow.

In English, We continued to look at our topic 'The Fantastic flying books of Mr Lessmore-Morris before the children wrote their own cyclone stories.

In Maths, we continued our decimals topic using concrete resources to help with our problem solving.

In Science this week, we attended a live Spaceship Earth Primary Show with 'The STEM HUB' The children enjoyed this interactive session.

In PE this week, we looked at how to select the appropriate dodging skill for the situation.

WB 08/01/24

Welcome back everyone! It was wonderful hearing all about everyone's break and it was even better to see how ready the children are for the year ahead.


We all enjoyed our first assembly of the year where we got thinking about how we can guide, challenge and achieve for 2024. We worked together in our learning council groups to motivate one another and we are all very excited about what 2024 has to offer.

In Maths we've been looking at decimals and using our knowledge of fractions to support our learning. The children are using their instant recall of facts from year 4 to support them more in terms of their reasoning and problem solving and this is fantastic to see. 


Our new Science topic is 'Geography' topic is rainforests. The children enjoyed using maps to label where all the rainforests are around the world and noticed that they are all situated near the equator! Great map reading year 5! 

WB 18/12/2023

We have now completed all of our topics.

Christmas festivities are in full swing in Year 5! Our hard work really paid off as our Merry Mayhem performances have been a hit! We have enjoyed welcoming many of our parents, grandparents and guardians in to sing along to songs from all of our favourite Christmas films! We have also enjoyed our Christmas party day, making 2024 calendars and our LED Christmas cards.

W/B 11.12.23

This week, our practice sessions are in full swing for our exciting Christmas performance. All the children have worked incredibly hard learning their songs and lines in some cases ready to all be put together with other year groups. The children can't wait to perform for their families and friends next week. 

Some children have been learning the cornet in their music lessons and this week they performed for the class and showed off their new musical talent and performed with great confidence. 

The Christmas festivities have begun with a Christmas Jumper and dinner day last week, as well as our Whole class trip to Gulliver's World! Now we have enjoyed a puppet show on Thursday, with lots of singing and laughing at the 18 different puppets that created the Christmas story. 

During our PE lessons, we have been continuing to improve our fitness and endurance with a circuit of exercises using our new OPAL Playground tyres. The children were surprised at how much energy was required to lift and move tyres and came up with creative exercises which worked a range muscle groups.

This week we have started our new topics.

English- . We have been looking at key features of instructional texts.

Maths- Graphs. We focused on interpreting data from graphs.

P.E- Health and Fitness. We took part in a circuit training session.

Science- Materials and properties. We have been looking at the 

History- Anglo- Saxons and Vikings. We have been looking at what Raiders are. 

Music- We have looked at the Blues genre.

W/B 23.10.23

In our final week of Autumn 1, we have been finishing off our topics. We completed our online safety topic.  In English, we continued to look at 'The Highwayman' and used ambitious vocabulary when editing some sections of the poem. . In Maths, we have completed our multiplication and division topic and used our knowledge that we have learnt over the half term to solve tricky long division and multiplication questions.. During our Black History assembly, we performed 'Sometimes I get a good feeling' by Etta James. The children loved singing this in front of the school. To finish our Art topic, we created our own space pictures from our dried collagraph print and drew our pre-planned space picture using mixed media.

W/B 16.10.23

In PE, we have been working together as a group learning about critical thinking. The children needed to move a mat but could only move around in a small hoop and then get their team across to the island following the rules. 

In maths we are multiplying two, three and four digit numbers by one and two digits using a variety of strategies such as column method, bar model and partitioning.

In English we have started out new genre- poetry. We are looking at 'The Highwayman' and have been using a variety of language features such as similes, metaphor, alliterative adjectives and repetition

Thursday was our last session with Rob and Meg from the LFC Foundation and we finished our help the environment topic by decorating bird and bug houses which will be hung around outdoor areas.

In Science we looked at 'The Big Bang Theory' We enjoyed a demonstration using a balloon and glitter to re-enact the hot explosion. Lastly, we looked at scientific evidence and compared this with our RE knowledge regarding God creating the world in seven days.

W/B 9/10/2023

On Monday Father Dan visited the class to support our learning about Christianity. He talked to us about how difficult it can be to always do the right thing. The children loved debating what temptation is before looking at the Lord's prayer in detail.

In science we continued our Earth and space topic- we looked at what 'spherical' means before discovering that the Earth bulges when spinning around the equator because of it's centrifugal force.

In English this week we finished our percussive text 'The Stellar Dome Community.' We looked at what benefits there would be from living on Mars before engaging in a debate and writing a persuasive balanced argument.  

This week, we celebrated National Mental Health Day. On Tuesday, the school council went and delivered envelopes of happiness to our local community and on Friday we split up into our learning council groups and discussed what mental health means to us.

W/B 25.09.23

 

In English, we have completed our video short 'One small step' and the children have completed their final piece of writing using all the knowledge that they have learnt. 

In Maths, we have been looking at using number lines, partitioning, place value charts and the column method to help us when adding and comparing numbers up to 1 000 000.

In Science, we looked at what gives the Earth day and night and how this impacts time zones around the world. 

This week, Year 5 had their third session with LFC Foundation. In groups the children came up with ideas about how they could help they could fund raise and presented their ideas to the class. Next week some of their ideas will started to be put in place. 

In Art, the children took inspiration from Teis Alber’s piece ‘Moonwalk’; considered how drawing can be developed through printmaking before creating our own collagraph printing plate.

W/B-18/09/23

This week in maths this week the children have been refining their knowledge of place value, working with numbers up to      1 000 000. As well as, rounding and comparing numbers to 1 000 000. 
In English we were using 'One small step’. This short video is a beautiful representation of the difficulties a child might endure when dealing with educational failure and bereavement . We used thesauruses to help us 
build a bank of synonyms and together worked hard when describing the plot points in the story. 
Our children have been taking part in PE lessons with Funda coach Tom. Where they have been working on their communication and teamwork skills during a variety of activities. 
Year 5 enjoyed their second session with LFC Foundation as part of the #iwill campaign. They loved working with coaches to come up with an environmental issues that they felt need addressing within our environment.
