Grange Valley Primary & Nursery School

Inspire to Guide, Challenge and Achieve.

Physical Education & Sport

Our vision at Grange Valley is to inspire and motivate children to have a love for P.E now, and throughout their life.

Children will be able to experience a wide range of inclusive activities to allow them to explore and develop a range of knowledge and skills including creativity, problem solving, resilience and optimum performance.

By offering high quality P.E opportunities we can develop children’s skills, alongside enhancing them as a person.

Subject Leader

My name is Mr Ashton and I am the Physical Education subject lead at Grange Valley Primary school. Firstly, I am passionate about P.E as since an early age sport has always been my passion. This has involved playing different sports, then leading into coaching different sports as a young adult to all ages. As well as this I believe that P.E should involve cognitive challenges as well as personal development and skill challenges.

If all these areas are covered then this will help a child physically, emotionally and socially. It will also mean traits such as resilience, teamwork and self-belief will develop to help children with challenges that they come across in their life.

My vision at Grange Valley is to inspire and motivate children to have a love for P.E now, and throughout their life. Children will be able to experience a wide range of inclusive activities to allow them to explore and develop a range of knowledge and skills including creativity, problem solving, resilience and optimum performance. By offering high quality P.E opportunities we can develop children’s skills, alongside enhancing them as a person.

This year the children have taken part in Football, Rugby, Boccia, Multi-skills, Dodgeball, Netball and Swimming competitions. The competitions have ranged from Year 1 all of the way to Year 6. All of the children have enjoyed taking part in these competitions and have really embraced taking on new sport competitions such as dodgeball, boccia and multi-skills.  Today we were very privileged, once again, to have Kate Cross, from the England Women's Cricket Team, join us with Chris Chambers to give some specialised cricket coaching to our children, see the slideshow below.

All about Kate!

Kathryn Laura Cross (born 3 October 1991) is an English international cricketer.   January 2010 she was called  up to join the England Women tour of Australia after injuries to Beth Morgan and Claire Taylor.  A right arm medium fast bowler and right handed batter, she was the first woman to be accepted into Lancashire's cricket academy in 2006 and won the Eversheds Most Promising Young Cricketer award in September 2007. She made her debut for the England Under-21 side in 2007. In October 2013 she was called up into the England Senior Squad to tour the West Indies. She made her T20 Debut against the West Indies and in November 2013 made her One Day International Debut, also against the West Indies. In her second game of the series (the first was washed out)she took 4 for 51 a performance which earned her the Player of the Match Award. England won the final two games of a three match series and became the first team to win a series against the West Indies in The Caribbean. In January 2014, she was selected for the Women's Ashes Tour of Australia, during which, she played in 6 matches of the 7 match series. In her debut Test Match at The WACA in Perth, Cross had match figures of 32 overs, 6 wickets for 70 runs in a game that England won by 61 runs; having taken 3 for 35 in both Australian innings. England went on to win the series and retain the Ashes by a margin of 10 points to 8.

National Sports Week

In Year 2 the children had a fantastic morning at Haydock High. We started with a parade around the sports hall to our national anthem and then spilt into groups to do a range of activities led by the year 9 children. We had target throwing, long jump, mini-golf, hurdles, basket ball, parachute, penalty shooting.

In Reception the children enjoyed taking parting part in some Mathematics circuit training. The children enjoyed spending time at each station doing activities like: measuring the running tracks, adding the football scores and designing repeating   pattern football shirts.

In Year 1 they researched using the Internet to find the different World Cup groups scores on the Fifa website. In Maths they then used these to create a table of scores and worked out each of the teams points using the number of games each team won, drew and lost.

In Year 3 the children have been making their own World Cup trophies.

In Year 5 the children went on a trip to Old Trafford.

Grange Valley Primary School Visit Lords Cricket Ground

The children at Grange Valley Primary School in Haydock couldn't believe that they had been chosen as one of 20 schools in England to visit Lords Cricket Ground in London, through the Chance to Shine programme, for the Spirit of Cricket open day on Tuesday 20th May 2014.Twenty children travelled to London by train, this being an adventure in itself for some children who had never been on a train before or visited the capital. Upon arrival children and staff joined Chris Tremlett, England   bowler and Charlotte Edwards, England Ladies Captain along with her England team mates on the Pavilion concourse - usually  preserved for MCC Members. The pitch was transformed into a school assembly hall with Mark Nicholas, Sky Sports  Personality who delivered a special MCC Spirit of Cricket Assembly. The children thoroughly enjoyed the chance to play on the main outfield and take part in cricket skills sessions, as well as learning about diet and nutrition in the Lord’s kitchen. The  children had great fun tasting cakes with hidden fruit and vegetables before getting to decorate their own cakes to take  home.  The day also included a tour of the ground including the Long room, viewing the ashes and the opportunity to sit in the changing rooms.

Interest in cricket at Grange Valley has grown immensely over the past twelve months with more children than ever wanting to be involved. Chris Chambers from Lancashire Cricket Board has worked hard along with the school staff to increase children's confidence in the sport as well as develop their skills. The chance to visit Lords was an amazing opportunity for the school.  It was so evident, on the day, how much confidence the children gained from the experience, one I am sure they will  never forget!

Meet the Grange Valley cheerleading team...

Our team of cheerleaders have been practising some fantastic routines with coach Sara.

Grange Valley Girls Coached by England Cricket Stars Charlotte Ewards and Danielle Hazel!

How exciting, four girls from Year 6 were chosen to participate in a girls cricket coaching session led by England Cricket Captain Charlotte Edwards and Danielle Hazel, both part of the Ashes winning side in 2013. The opportunity became available through the ‘Chance to Shine Ambassadors Programme’. Fay, Molly, Allana and Shannon had a great time and were a little star struck when they met Charlotte and Danielle!

The girls were really excited to bring back all that they had learned and will now use their skills to coach others both during class sport sessions and during playground leader games.
