Grange Valley Primary & Nursery School

  1. Our Curriculum
  2. Our Art and Design

Grange Valley Primary School is committed to encouraging creativity through a wide variety of forms and expression. All children are encouraged to develop their artistic creativity, learn and acquire new skills and processes. They are given opportunities to explore a wide range of materials, tools and techniques in 2D, 3D and virtual form.

Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination at Grange Valley. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Children become involved in shaping their environments through art and design activities. They learn to make informed judgement's, aesthetic and practical decisions. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.

My name is Mrs Morley and I am the subject leader for Art and Design at Grange Valley Primary School. I am passionate about all forms of Art and Design, I particularly love collage and using my sketch book to gather ideas and explore. I believe that children should have opportunities to express themselves freely and creatively, enabling them to reach their potential.

With this in mind, we have carefully planned our art and design curriculum at Grange Valley Primary School to offer a high-quality art and design education which enables children to be inspired, allow them to think innovatively and develop an artistic process. We want to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, crafts and design. As pupils progress, they are encouraged to think critically, therefore they are able develop a deeper understanding of art and design. They will also develop and understanding of how art and design both reflects and shapes history and how it can contribute to the future and creativity of the world.

To ensure that learning is meaningful, we also offer a range of CPD opportunities for all staff and have a culture of knowledge sharing across the school. Through this collective learning. I am proud that our team is always striving to be the best that it can be.

We value the children’s input to continuing to refine our curriculum ensuring it meet the needs of every Grange Valley child. The aim of mini leaders is to enhance children’s personal development skill whilst making a positive difference to our school. Teams will meet at least once every half term.
