Welcome to Year 6 - Miss Kelly's Class 2018-19

The end of our time at Grange Valley!

Year 6 have had an amazing end to their time at Primary School! They have met friends for life, built amazing relationships and ended their year on a high! A huge well done to everyone. We are so proud of everything that you have achieved and you should all be so proud of yourselves!

We've now left school,
It's how the story ends,
Tears of happiness is what we recommend,

It's what we say,
But there's always a little pain,
Because once you've left,
It's not the same,

You could walk through school and you would see,
Your friends who have grown up incredibly,
But now you've gone,
It's not the same,
As you may never see them again,

Your friends who have grown up right beside you,
Who have helped you through your daily strife,
Will go ahead and leave behind them,
You who wants the same old life,

But you can not live your life in the past,
Hoping that the same memories will last,
You have to move on and just be glad,
That leaving has made you so sad,
As this just shows that you have loved,
Your days at school here with us,

So go ahead and live your life,
And become what you want to be,
But don't forget the days you spent,
When you were young at school with me.

Our Summer 1 Half Term

Year 6 have had an extra busy half term! Of course, Year 6 started the half term with their SATs. Every child tried their best, approached the week with a smile and made us all so proud! At the end of the week, our school treated us to an ice cream! It was a lovely way to end the week!

The hard work didn't stop there though! In Science, we have explored Light. We have learnt how we see and explored what refraction is and how we can refract light. We also explored shadows further, deepening our learning from previous year groups, and explored the colour spectrum.

In Geography, we have explored Rivers. We discussed rivers in the UK and rivers of the world. We learnt about the features of a river, such as the upper, middle and lower course. We then learnt about erosion and deposition and how rivers change shape over time. After that, we debating whether dams have a positive or negative effect on the environment around them. I have to say - it was a very interesting debate!

In Art and Design, we learnt about a different artist from North America each week. We explored artists such as John Singer Sargent, Ansel Adams, Helen Frankenthaler and Frank Lloyd Wright. We discovered that architects and photographers are considered to be artists and we based lots of our designs on these great artists' work.

Enjoy your half term! We have lots of fun in store for next half term including our residential to Kingswood, some exciting writing opportunities and of course, our Year 6 production!

Our Spring 2 Half Term

It’s been a very busy half term as we prepare for our SATs. We have built lots of resilience this half term and we are gaining confidence in our own abilities, always aiming to be the best that we can be!

In History, we have learnt all about The Tudors. We have learnt who the Tudors were, all about the Battle of Bosworth (known as the War of the Roses) and about Henry Tudor's many wives! Learning about The Tudors inspired us to create some wonderful pieces of writing as we stepped into the role of a person from The Tudor times!

In Science, we have explored Animals and Humans. We identified and named parts of the circulatory system and described their functions. We also learnt how water and nutrients are transported within the body and discussed the impact of good health and nutrition on our bodies. We set up an investigation where we investigated the impact of exercise on our bodies through monitoring our heart rate.

This half term, we took part in our whole school eco-art project in the hall. We used recycled materials to create a beautiful mural in the hall. Take a look when you're next in school!

Keep up the hard work Year 6. You are making everyone proud!

Have a lovely half term everyone

Our Spring 1 Half Term

It’s been another great half term in Year 6!

In English, we started our half term with the Write Stuff unit ‘Paperman.’ This was based on a short silent Pixar film. This unit taught us lots of writer’s techniques such as symbolism, pathetic fallacy and more! We absolutely loved this unit, especially when we got to turn the unit ‘on it’s head’ and used the video stimulus ‘Ruckus.’ ‘Ruckus’ was the complete opposite to Paperman so we had to use our techniques in a contrasting way. Our final outcome was absolutely amazing and everyone was so proud of their work! Our writing is proudly displayed outside our classroom!

In Maths, the highlight of our learning this half term was our ‘Money Money Money Week.’ During this week, the children met lots of new visitors who told us all about their careers. We met an air-hostess, a social worker, a nurse, a beautician and a banker. The banker from Santander taught us all about saving, spending and budgeting. Of course, we put our Maths skills to the test all throughout this week. We used our new knowledge of fractions, decimals and particularly percentages and also used our statistic skills. We used our money and problem solving skills to work out how much money and profit we would make at our Grange Valley Market!

The author Tom Palmer visited our school! We got to meet him, learn all about how he became an author and found out what inspires him! Tom’s presence in school certainly furthered our excitement around reading and lots of children in Year 6 now always have their heads buried in a Tom Palmer book!

During our Topic lessons, we have been exploring The Americas. We have acquired lots of new knowledge about human Geography and loved our task of planning a holiday to Mexico! Our persuasive brochures were so successful, Miss Kelly thinks that she may even go there in Summer!

In Computing, we have learnt all about Film Making. We have planned, recorded and edited our own short films. In Science, we enjoyed learning all about Living Things. The highlight of our Science lessons was our mould experiment! We set up a fair test and placed bread in different conditions to see how the bread responded. We had some very mouldy, smelly bread by the end of the week!

A big well done to everyone who raised lots of money during our Sponsored fitness circuits - it was great to see everyone getting involved and raising money for Paralympics and also for our school sports equipment!

Have a lovely half term,

I am looking forward to an even better half term in Spring 2

Our Autumn 2 Half Term

Year 6 have had a great Autumn 2 half term!

In English, the children started with a poetry unit based around ‘The Greatest Showman.’ They learnt lots of new poetry genres such as Kenning, Ballad and Narrative and finished the unit by writing an anthology of poetry based upon The Greatest Showman. After that, we moved on to the text ‘A Monster Calls’ where the children had to create their own spooky stories. The children built upon their sentence stacking techniques and further embedded their knowledge of multi-clause sentence structures. They were so proud of their writing! Finally, we learnt about formal letters of complaint. We visited Lapland and found that it was not at all how we were expecting it to be! We were so disappointed that we had to write and tell the hotel owners! The children completed some wonderful creative writing with formal techniques and lots of humour!

In Maths, the children have consolidated their knowledge of fractions and decimals and also learnt new things. Every week, our Arithmetic scores are improving and we are becoming more confident when tackling tricky Reasoning papers. We were so pleased when we realised how much our scores had improved since our first assessment week!

To celebrate the WWI centenary, Year 6 performed an assembly in front of the whole school and parents. The children were extremely respectful and made their families proud. Well done Year 6! The children came to school dressed in WWI costumes and really enjoyed a photography workshop where they used greenscreen to import themselves in to WWI scenes.

In Science, our unit has been Electricity. The children learnt how to construct simple circuits using cells, bulbs, wires and switches. They learnt how to draw scientific diagrams and really enjoyed working scientifically this half term. We investigated whether the voltage affects the brightness of a bulb and whether different materials were conductors or insulators.

Of course, we have had lots of Christmassy fun too! We went to Christ Church, Haydock to celebrate the Christmas story. We also led our Christmas Quiz, ‘Merry Movie Mayhem.’ The parents came to join in the quiz and we sang songs from Christmas films! The children performed brilliantly and had lots of fun!

Year 6 have had a fantastic first term and we are ready for a break before the hard work (and fun) starts in January!
Merry Christmas everybody!

Our Autumn 1 Half Term

Year 6 have made a fantastic start to this academic year. Our theme for the half term has been WWII. We have explored this through Writing, Research, History and Art. The children produced WWII non-fiction reports and thoroughly enjoyed researching their facts and writing a succinct report in a formal style. We payed a visit to the library for a WWII workshop where we wrote in role of evacuees.

One of the highlights of our half term was the dinosaur week! We investigated the mysterious egg, called the police to school to help us and loved helping the younger ones play detectives. We produced some fantastic writing as a result of this week!

Year 6 have had an extremely rich reading curriculum. During our transition days, Year 6 held a Book World Cup where they we chose our class novel for September. Collectively, we chose Room 13 by Robert Swindells. Reading this daily, along with brilliant resources from the library, reading week author visits and other reading activities, has ensured that the children are excited about reading and has developed a positive reading culture within the classroom. The introduction of Whole Class Reading Vipers has instilled a further love for reading, with children requesting books that we have explored in Whole Class Reading from the library to read themselves.

In Maths, we have explored numbers to 10 million, place value, and all four operations. The children are becoming more confident in problem solving and their arithmetic scores are rapidly improving in such a short amount of time. Our enthusiasm for Maths is improving and we are building a culture where we are trying to be the best that we can be and build our resilience in the run up to SATs preparation.

In Science, we have learnt all about inheritance and evolution. We have learnt about acquired and inherited characteristics, how animals adapt to their environments and have set up our own enquiry into growth, using scientific enquiry, measuring and recording skills.

Overall, Year 6 have had a brilliant start to their final year of primary school and I hope that it only gets better!
