Reception Spring Overview

Welcome to our Reception blog. On this you will be able to see important dates, letters, documents, presentations, information about the EYFS curriculum and lots of lovely photographs.

At Grange Valley Primary School, we value the importance of child led learning. Planning 'in the moment' is all about seizing the moment for children to progress in their learning, whilst following their own interests.  Based on what the children are already deeply involved in, this way of planning relies on our skilled practitioners, to use quality interactions to draw out the children’s knowledge and build on it there and then. We observe the children in their play and look out for ‘teachable moments’ which we then act upon in order to ensure the children progress.

This way of working means that most planning is retrospective. Each member of the Early Years team records what they have done each day to help the children with their learning. We then look at this at the end of the day to consider how we can further develop and extend this learning.

Each half-term we will publish an overview of what we have been doing in Reception and photographs of the children learning.

We look forward to taking the children on a wonderful learning journey.

Spring 2

At the beginning of our Spring 2 half term by carrying on our Space topic. We looked at the book 'Aliens Love Underpants'. The children went on an underpant hunt and designed their own underpants. We then wrote sentences to describe the underpants such as 'My underpants are stripey'. In Maths we looked at Subtraction for the first time. We used physical resources such as cubes and teddy bears at first. Then we used a number line to count backwords and subtract a number from another number e.g. 8-2.

After this we had World Book Week. As you can see below we had a fantastic week. We had a visit from an author called Rachel Lyon. She read us a story called 'I Wish I Was Born a Unicorn' and also did a book signing. In class we also read the book called 'Not Enough For Queen Fluff' and wrote about our favourite part. In Maths we focused on weight. The children were very good at discussing vocabulary such as heavy and light. We then moved on to weighing objects using scales. On the Friday we had a lovely Booky Breakfast were the children read with their parents in class and we had pancakes, fruit, brioche and juice.

The next week we focused on the story of 'The Tiger Who Came For Tea'. The children loved acting out a tea party through role play.  The children wrote an invitation to invite the Tiger to come to their house for tea. In Math we focused on one more and one less. This week we also had our brilliant Marvellous Maths workshop. We had a fantastic turn out from parents and the children loved showing their parents how to use resources. I hope it was useful!

This week we looked at Spring. The children went on a Spring walk and wrote about what they had seen. In Maths the children learnt about 3D shapes. Miss Clewes was so impressed with the vocabulary that the children used to name and describe the shapes. The children also made cards for special people in their lives.

I hope everybody is OK and has their home learning packs. If you need anything please Dojo Mr Ashton. Thank you :)

Reception’s Spring 1 Learning Journey

During the first week of the half term the children looked at ‘On My Holidays’ topic. Mr Ashton thought it would be nice for the children to discuss what they did over Christmas and the presents that they received. The children looked at adding two groups using objects and moving onto using a number line.

In the next two weeks of the half term the children focused on dinosaurs. The children learnt facts about different dinosaurs and also had a dinosaur enter our classroom and mess it all up! During these two weeks the children wrote about what happened in the classroom when the dinosaur visited and we created a diagram of our favourite dinosaurs. In Maths the children have looked at one more and one less than a given number.  In the second week the children also focused on telling the time. They did very well at this and looked at telling the time when it was o'clock and half past. The children also made their own dinosaur fossils.

The next week we looked at Winter and Arctic animals. The children went on a winter walk around the school and wrote about the different things they could see, feel, hear and smell on the Winter Walk. They produced some brilliant sentence writing. During Maths we focused on Money. The children used real life money to buy things from our role play shop and even more onto adding coins together to make new amounts of money.

During the next week of term it was Chinese New Year. We celebrated Chinese New Year by learning about the story of the Zodiac, as well as tasting new Chinese food. We made red lanterns and our own Chinese dragons. Lots of children went to see the celebrations in Liverpool and enjoyed telling the class all about them. In Maths we looked at doubling numbers.

The last week of term we looked at the story of ‘Whatever Next’. This was the start of our Space topic which the children really enjoy. They acted out the story or ‘Whatever Next’ and discussed the main events. The children then produced a brilliant diary entry from their time on the moon. In Maths we followed on from doubling by looking at halving numbers. The children loved being creative by making different rockets using cardboard boxes and tubes.

Autumn 2

This half term the children have focused on topics such as Bonfire Night, Rainbow Fish, Old and New Toys, Fairytales and of course Christmas. We have looked at stories linked to all of these topics and have followed the children's interests. The children have also enjoyed their Christmas dinner, Christmas party, trip to Imagine That and of course their fantastic acting in the Nativity play. Thank you for all your wonderful support and have a brilliant Christmas!

Mr Ashton even got a call from Santa! He said all of Reception are on the nice list!
