Aims

Linked to our Geography Curriculum we held a themed week in school called 'Around the World!' The week was cross curricular and helped all our children learn a range of new skills, such as:

  • developing their knowledge of the location of significant places
  • to understand about different countries physical and human characteristics and be able to compare this to the UK
  • interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps and diagrams.
  • to learn about different cultures and ways of living.
  • to learn foreign languages.

We wanted to support the children in learning about different countries and cultures in the world around them to help support them in their Geography learning. We also wanted to inspire the pupils in their curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Countries

Each class choose a country to focus on for the week and through all learning make comparisons to the UK. Below is a list of the chosen countries. See each classes blogs for information about what they were learning and photos. Year overviews can be found on this page.

Events

At the beginning of the week we had POP Group come into school to perform for all year groups from nursery to Year 6. The children learnt about the different songs through out the decades and had to locate the country of origin on a map. During the performance the children got an opportunity to play different instruments from around the world including pan pipes from Peru, digeredoos from Australia, ocarinas from China, tin whistles from Ireland and many more.

In the middle of cross curricular English and Maths lessons linked to travel the children participated in a Fly and Dine afternoon. Each class learnt and tasted traditional foods or foods grown in that country from their country. They then flew to another destination (class) to taste the foods of another country.

To finish off the week, we held a ‘Grange Valley Around the World Day’ on Friday. All the children were invited to come into school dressed in traditional clothes or colours of their country. In the morning we had an assembly for the whole school and all parents. Each class performed a short presentation to show their knowledge learnt from the week.

Nursery - Performed the song 'Frere Jacques'

Reception - Taught the whole school who to say hello in Chinese and showed off their art work of Chinese dragons and lanterns.

Year 1 - Performed an acrostic poem giving facts about Australia.

Year 2 - Sang a song called "50 states of America"

Year 3 - Showed their Greek vase art work and read out facts about the country.

Year 4 - Read facts and piece of writing about the country.

Year 5 - Preformed a dance to 'Walk like an Egyptian'

Year 6 - Taught the whole school how to say numbers 1-20 and basic colours in Italian.

For the rest of the day every children visited different year groups and learnt about a different country completing an art or drama activity. The older children worked with the younger children as they went around the school. before visiting each country the children had to check in at the Grange Valley International Airport set up in the school hall. They had their passports checked and stamped for the country they were travelling to. The children loved collecting the stamps in their passports as they board the different airlines relating to the country. See pictures from the day on this page.
