Good Food and Exercise Day 7.10.15

Children at Grange Valley have been very healthy and fit this week to celebrate our ‘Good Food and Exercise Day’

Some children created information texts all about being healthy and fit. The children were able to say lots about the benefits of being healthy and things that we can do to stay healthy. They used subheading s and headings in their work, and made sure that they used an informative voice for their audience. We also created poems all about sports stars which included similes. We were really pleased with the writing the children produced. Here are some pictures of the impressive, writing below.

Some children created posters to advertise how to be healthy and eat our 5 a Day. These are on display throughout school, promoting a healthy message.

In Y3 in Science children used standard units (seconds) to measure how long it took us to run from one side of the playground and back. They timed each other and then showed their results in a frequency chart and then a pictogram.

In Y 4 the children also linked their Science lesson to our exercise day, they explored their bodies and heart rates through a P.E based activity. The children learnt how to calculate their heart rate and made predictions about what would happen to our bodies during different stages of exercise. We discovered that the more our bodies move, the faster our heartbeat is (and according to the children the more tired, hot and sweaty they became).

As it was National Poetry Day the same week some children showed off their poetry skills by creating poems linked with our healthy eating and exercise day. We certainly have a talented group of poets at Grange Valley in Y4!

Y5 worked on a very exciting project…their very own musical parody video in order to promote ‘Good Food and Exercise’. It shows how we know how to stay fit and eat healthily. Our music video is currently still in the editing stages, we are still in the process of adding the lyrics and so as soon as it is ready we will certainly share the finished article with you !  For now here is a sneak preview of where they are up to  It’s definitely going to be a YouTube hit!

Thank you so much to Terry Lavin from St.Helens College for visiting us today ( 7.10.15 ) and supporting our Good Food and Exercise Day.  Terry cooked a delicious, healthy, salmon stir fry with fresh ingredients, some of which the children had not come across before. Terry explained to the children the benefits of the ingredients he used.  I would certainly recommend a visit to his restaurant, Colours in St. Helens Town Centre his food was delicious!
