Welcome to Miss Pritchard's Year 6 Blog

Week beginning 13th July 2015

It has been an exciting, but very emotional week in Year 6. On Monday and Tuesday Year 6 performed their production ‘Bugsy Malone’ to parents and friends and they were amazing! I am so proud of the class, they worked really hard to prepare for this performance and were fabulous!

On Wednesday we enjoyed our Leaver’s Barbeque. We enjoyed spending some time together as a class to celebrate all of our achievements this year.

On Friday, Year 6 presented their Leaver's Assembly to the whole school and parents. We reflected on our memories of Grange Valley and about moving on to our new schools in September. Mrs Holcroft presented each child with a scroll and recollection book. The children were really excited about their gifts from school and couldn't wait to start filling them with signatures!

It was a very emotional home time on Friday. The class were sad to be leaving their friends and school, but excited to start their new High Schools.

Year 6 you have been an absolute pleasure to teach this year, we have enjoyed watching you make lots of progress and grow in confidence. We have made some fantastic memories and we thank Year 6 for an amazing year at Grange Valley. We wish you all the very best of luck and success in High School, we will be thinking about you in September!

Please come back and visit!

Thank you to all parents for your support this year, we were overwhelmed by your kind words and gifts.

Have a lovely summer break.

Remember Year 6.......

Week beginning 6th July 2015

Wow! What an amazing week in Year 6! At the start of the week, Year 6 received their SATs results. We are EXTREMELY proud of every child in the class. They have worked so hard this year and thoroughly deserve their fantastic results. It was lovely to see how excited the class were to see their hard work and determination truly pay off! Well done Year 6!

It was lovely to end the week with some fantastic trips and activities to celebrate our success and the end to an amazing year.

On Wednesday we left school in some very miserable weather! However, when we arrived at PGL, Boreatton Park the sun came out and we settled in to our tents for some action packed activities! These included: giant swing, challenge course, raft building, abseiling, low level ropes, orienteering, zip wire along with a campfire and disco. We are so proud of the class! Their behaviour was impeccable. Josh our ‘Groupie’ said the group were amazing and he had never received such brilliant feedback about our groups behaviour from the instructors. They have been a credit to the school.

All children challenged themselves to complete activities that they found daunting at first- the class encouraged each other and celebrated their class mate's achievements- each child grew in confidence and it was lovely to see them work as a team. It was a fantastic trip that I am sure they will remember for a lifetime! Please see the photographs above.

Mrs Abbott’s group took part in some fantastic activities which included fencing, geocaching, bowling, laser quest, bath bomb making and baking. They had some brilliant experiences and a lovely end to the week! Mia said ‘It was amazing!’

This was excellent preparation for this year’s sports day! Year 6 are VERY competitive, so this event is always eagerly anticipated! Year 6 even practised their sprint and relay races at playtimes to ensure they were fully prepared! We were very proud of Mark for winning the long distance and Abi for not giving up and pushing herself all the way to the finish line. Week beginning 15th June 2015

This week has been Science Week at Grange Valley.....

In Monday’s assembly Mrs Fowler read a letter to the whole school from Bubbles the Clown who needed to find out how to create the best bubbles! On Tuesday we carried out a science experiment to test a variety of bubble solutions to find the most successful solution. We used a bubble solution made up of 50ml of washing up liquid and 150ml of water, to the second bubble solution we added a teaspoon of salt and to the third we added a teaspoon of sugar. We discussed in class our predictions and ensured that our experiment would be a fair test. Year 6 used lots of their science knowledge from the year to explain why we needed to have the same amount of bubble solution in each beaker and use the same amount of salt and sugar.

We then carried out three trials on each bubble solution and recorded our results. The class very quickly discovered that sugar made the bubbles much bigger and less likely to pop! The salt solution made the bubbles pop very easily. After writing our conclusions we wrote a letter to Bubbles the clown explaining our findings and included some of our photographs. We then had lots of fun on the playground making some huge bubbles, Mikey's travelled so far into the sky we think it disappeared into the clouds! Why not try this at home!

We also enjoyed a trip to church organised by Mrs Morris where we discussed our worries and fears about moving to new schools in September. We completed some games and activities that helped to show the class how normal it is to be anxious and we soon found that we all had similar fears and questions. We enjoyed a chat with our friends and some older pupils in a relaxed environment with some juice and biscuits and completed some craft!

On Wednesday the school nurse came in to school to talk to Year 6 all about hygiene and the importance of washing our hands to ensure we stay healthy and prevent the spread of germs. The class really enjoyed testing how effective they were at washing their hands under a UV light box. We applied a special cream and observed if we had managed to wash away all of the germs we carry around on our hands. An evaluation form for parents will soon be sent home so that you can feedback the impact this information has had on your child.

On Thursday we are recording our songs for the school CD, we have some lovely singing voices in Year 6 so these will certainly be put to good use. The CD will be fantastic so please ensure you send in your order form as soon as possible if you would like to purchase a copy.

Friday is Eco Art Day, Mrs Abbott is completing some beautiful landscapes with the class using recycled paper for a class display.

What a brilliant week at Grange Valley!

The highlight of this week has definitely been our trip to Alton Towers! This trip is a fantastic opportunity for the class to spend some quality time together and celebrate their hard work and achievements, not only in Year 6, but their time at Grange Valley as a whole. It was fantastic to see so many smiles on all of the children's faces as we entered the park and enjoyed the rides. The class were so excited! For some children it was their first time on a rollercoaster and it was amazing to see how proud they were of themselves and to listen to their conversations about their favourite rides! Josh said, 'this is the best trip ever!' Mark said; 'I'm now King of Rides!' The following day the children were still discussing the rides and the laughs that we had together during the day as we had a look at our photographs.

The whole class behaved impeccably throughout the whole day and should be extremely proud of themselves- they were fantastic ambassadors for our school. It was a pleasure to spend such a fantastic day with a fantastic class, this will definitely be a day that we will remember for a long time!

Lots more photos to follow!!

Also this week......

Lights, Camera, Action!.............

Our attention also turned this week to our end of year production- 'Bugsy Malone' The class are excited about rehearsing and preparing for their end of year performance and were extremely professional when we held auditions for the cast! They had obviously taken this very seriously and prepared for their audition thoroughly. We had some very confident performances, I can't wait to get started!

Well done Year 6, Grange Valley is so proud of you! The whole class were amazing!

It was great to see the children in school bright and early each morning, enjoying toast and cereal in the hall in preparation for their SATs tests. We began on Monday with a few nerves, but these soon turned to confidence as the week progressed.

I am extremely proud of how the children prepared themselves in class, how they tackled the tests and how they conducted themselves in such a mature manner all week. They really did apply 100% effort to each and every assessment throughout the week and thoroughly deserved their treat on Friday.

The class were very excited when the ice-cream van arrived on the school playground to celebrate Year 6’s fantastic achievements. We were joined by all of the staff who supported children through their SATs assessments for a well- earned treat!

This week we have completed some final revision in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling and Maths. Lots of children took part in some afternoon booster groups to brush up on some last minute skills ready for next week. I am extremely proud of Year 6, they have worked so hard throughout the whole of this year and have maintained their efforts and determination each and every week. They are ready and prepared for the week ahead and should be proud of their achievements so far and be excited to show off how fantastic I know they all are! All that is left to do is to ensure that they relax, have a good nights sleep and try their very best!

We also enjoyed some dodge ball in the hall to let off some steam and enjoyed creating some  'Keep Calm' motivational posters to inspire us all- These included 'keep calm and be awesome' 'keep calm and try your best' along with many more. We also enjoyed a drink and snack on Wednesday afternoon, this was a perfect opportunity for your child to ask any last minute questions in a relaxed, informal environment.

If you have any concerns or questions then please do not hesitate to contact me. I am always available on the playground at the beginning and end of the school day.

We look foward to welcoming your child into school on Monday for breakfast at 8.30am. Please ensure your child arrives on time through the main school entrance and encourage your child to have plenty of rest and an early night to ensure that they can concentrate and perform at their very best.

On Thursday our new school gate arrived which means that the electrics will soon be activated. The gates will be controlled by the office as an extra security measure. Keeping our children safe at all times is so important to us at Grange Valley.

The gates will be locked to cars from 8:40 until 3:40, access within those times will be limited. Staff will have access fobs and visitors will need to speak to the office via the intercom that will be situated by the entrance.

The gates for pedestrians will also be locked and access to school will be limited with permission needed via the office through the new intercom.

Any queries please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Holcroft or the office staff.

Thank you for your continued support.

Trip to Alton Towers- Wednesday 20th May. Please ensure your child’s permission slip is returned to school as soon as possible along with any sponsor money.

This week we have worked hard to revise lots of key facts from throughout the year. Year 6 are working really hard to ensure they are fully prepared for their upcoming assessment week and have taken on every challenge presented to them with maturity and enthusiasm. We have discussed some important techniques for Reading, SPAG and essential facts and knowledge for Maths. All the class are working really hard in their booster groups in school and can’t wait to show off their knowledge! A letter will be sent home next week with information regarding SATS week and a timetable for the week.

The highlight of my week has got to be the sponsored silence!! Year 6 decided that in order to raise the final amount needed for our trip to Alton Towers they would like to challenge themselves to a sponsored silence in class. I must say- I was a little anxious about whether they were actually capable of staying silent for this amount of time…but they did it in style! It is amazing what the prospect of a few rollercoasters can do! It was bliss!!! I think we should do this every week! Thank you so much to all parents, family members and friends who supported their child in raising money for this event, we really do appreciate it! We are all really excited about our trip to Alton Towers, which will be a lovely end to a very, very busy, but rewarding half term!

Have a lovely bank holiday.

It was lovely to welcome the class back after the Easter break. Year 6 were very excited to have a look around the new library and office area on Monday. We all feel very lucky to have such a brilliant school! Abi said ‘Wow, it’s amazing!”

A group of our children enjoyed reading with Mrs Holcroft on Wednesday afternoon in our new library area. They are thoroughly enjoying reading ‘Running Wild’ in their reading booster group.

We have settled straight back into our routine this week by completing some Maths revision on measures, ratios, calculations and problem solving. The class were very keen to show off how much they have remembered- I am very impressed! We enjoyed using the IPADS to practise our times tables using a game called ‘Hit the Button.’ This game can be played at home on a website called ‘Top Marks.’ This website also has lots of other games to help your child to improve their knowledge in lots of other areas of Maths and English.

We also revised our SPAG work and completed a recount all about some of the exciting things we have been up to over the holidays. We worked hard to improve our writing and move closer to achieving our next writing target.

Every Wednesday at lunchtime during the run up to SATS week, I will be holding a ‘drop in’ session for children in the class who would like to come along for some extra help with any areas of their work. This can simply be to ask for some support with an aspect of their class work or homework or just to have some quiet time to read a book, play some maths games, learn spellings and revise. Please encourage your child to attend this club if they have struggled with any aspect of their homework.

Have a lovely weekend

Week beginning 30th March 2015

The holidays have been eagerly anticipated in Year 6 after all our revision, practice papers and booster groups! All children are certainly looking foward to a rest! However, booster groups during school time will continue as usual and I will be organising some lunchtime booster groups for children who require any additional support with topics in class, homework or would just like to complete RM Maths or extra reading during lunch! Please encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity.

SATs week begins on Monday 11th May. I have set some maths, reading and spelling homework for over the Easter break to revise some important facts ready for the beginning of the new term.

Twelve of our children attended a Primary Quiz at Haydock High School and impressed us with their general knowledge, competing against a number of schools. Grange Valley came 4th out of 13 teams!....

Mrs Abbott has worked hard to organise an Easter Assembly led by Years 5 and 6 complete with beautiful readings about the meaning of Easter and amazing singing and dancing!

It has been a lovely week in school and a fantastic end to the Spring Term!

We wish you all a Happy Easter!

Have a lovely break.

Year 6 Team.

Week beginning 23rd March 2015

We are currently working really hard to improve our writing and achieve our writing targets. Year 6 love Jeff Kinney’s books ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ so we decided to write some very funny diary entries of our own!

We enjoyed reading some extracts from the book to inspire us and discussed how Jeff Kinney engages and entertains his reader with his informal style of writing, interesting vocabulary and humour.

At the beginning of the week we thought carefully about some funny events and stories that we could include in our diary and created a comic strip. Later in the week, we discussed all the features of a diary entry and worked hard to challenge ourselves to vary our punctuation, use exciting vocabulary and even include some alliteration, metaphors and rhetorical questions!

Josh, Mark, Tom, Ethan, Cameron and Ben were all really excited to show Mrs Holcroft and Mrs Threlkeld their finished work. They all worked really hard to achieve their learning challenges- well done boys!

Year 6 are always really excited and eager to find out if they have progressed to the next level in their writing so I am really looking forward to reading these in detail and informing them of their progress next week!

Well done Year 6!

Have a lovely weekend

Thank you to all parents who attended Parents’ Evening this week. The class were very excited to read your comments on their feedback sheets on Thursday morning!

This week I set the class a challenge to work in groups to plan a short revision session in either SPAG or Maths. I was amazed at the enthusiasm shown by each group. They worked extremely hard to create a short lesson revising some key facts that will be essential for our upcoming SATs assessments. It was lovely to see how confident the class are at recalling key information that we have covered so far this year.

Each group also planned some exciting activities to test the class after their lessons. These include- quizzes, Maths loop games, word searches, bingo games and much more. I can’t wait to see the finished presentations next week!

Week beginning 9th March 2015

This week we enjoyed visiting the book fair to explore all the books on offer and enjoy some reading time! It was lovely to see the class so excited about reading new books and discussing their favourite stories.

In English this week we have completed a re draft of our non-chronological writing using our self-assessment sheets and advice from our writing partners. In Maths we have worked through a variety of problem solving tasks, completed mental maths questions and worked hard to find the mean, mode, median and range of a set of data.

In our Topic lessons we worked hard to compare our own culture to a child’s in the rainforest. We discovered what life might be like for a child living in a tribe and completed some fantastic comparative diary entries. Miss Jones is working hard to achieve the ‘Geography Quality Mark’ for our school. We enjoyed showing Miss Jones our map skills by locating rainforests on a world map and our knowledge of human geography when she visited our class this week during our Geography lessons.

Emily F did an amazing job of answering
