We've had a very creative week this week!

On Tuesday, our Pop Choir attended Supersing at the Theatre Royal! It was a fantastic opportunity to sing with other schools and show off the songs that we have learnt during Pop Choir. Ryan, from our class, was invited on to the stage and chosen to sing a solo to Human! He was fantastic and did Grange Valley proud! There are pictures of us at the theatre below.

On Wednesday, Grace and Jennifer went to the Town Hall with Miss Daniels to see our artwork. It was a great success as we were presented with three 1st place awards for our Art Exhibition for the St Helens Voice of the Child competition. We won 1st place for Year 5's stop motion pictures, 1st place for Year 6's Elmer and 1st place for overall outstanding contribution.Well done Grange Valley!

On Thursday morning, our parents came to see our dance performances from Breakfast Dance Club. The children performed brilliantly and their parents were very proud!  There are pictures from the performances below.

We've been very busy this week as we are now learning in our new Year 6 classroom! We have proved that we are mature and sensible enough so we have moved in early! The children have loved being involved with the set up of their new classroom and everyone is so excited for next year!

It's been a very busy week in Year 5!

This week, our focus has been on a new style of English writing using the FANTASTICS further. We have explored 'Zoo,' a text by Anthony Browne. We have thought really carefully about the content in our sentences and slowed our writing down to ensure that each sentence is perfect! We have written complex sentences, used brackets and dashes and thought about the Fantastics in each of these. We are looking forward to continuing this next week!

In Maths, we have been converting units of measure to solve problems. The children have been using their basic conversion facts to help them to work out larger or smaller numbers. Lots of the children are now confident with this and we will be building on this next week.

We are enjoying our transition and this week, we wrote a section of our class novel, The Girl of Ink and Stars, to celebrate on our new classroom walls! The children are showing me that they are definitely ready for Year 6! We also decided what our jobs will be next year! We have got lots of important responsibilities to look forward to!

Our highlight of the week was the Music Showcase on Thursday afternoon! We enjoyed performances from Pop Choir, Guitar tuition group, Y2 Recorders and Y4 Brass. Everyone performed brilliantly and it was a great celebration of our talents!

Attendance: 83% This is not our best due to lots of holidays. Attendance is still extremely important, even in the Summer term as we are still learning new things and getting ready for next year.

We've had a great Culture Week!

This week was Culture Week across the whole school. Our class based all of our learning around India. On Monday, Emma came in to do some Indian dancing. This was inspired by Bollywood Dance! On Wednesday, we were really lucky as we got to do Indian food tasting! We tried onion bahjis, chicken pakora, raita, mango chutney, saag aloo, poppadoms and bombay potatoes. Year 5 were very adventurous with their tasting and they showed lots of gratitude and lovely manners! It was a lovely morning! On Friday, we completed some Indian artwork inspired by Rangoli patterns. Our artwork was beautiful and also part of our transition as it will be on display in our Year 6 classroom next year! We also judged all of the other class' restaurants. As we had already created our restaurants at St Austins, we created our own success criteria and judged the other classes. Well done everyone!

We have had lots of sporting achievements this week! Our Rounders team played brilliantly on Tuesday. Our Rugby team competition in a day long tournament on Wednesday and got to the semi final playoffs. Finally, our Football team played at St James' in the Haydock football tournament after school on Thursday. Well done to all involved!

On Thursday, we had our sponsored spin! Everyone span their fidget spinners for 20 minutes! Thank you all for your sponsors. Proceeds will go towards a forest school for next year.

Attendance: 96% Well done everyone!

Year 5 have had a fantastic week this week!

On Monday, an Artist, Claire Weetman, came to help us start out Art Week. First, we looked at Claire's work. It was fantastic! We then used cameras and iPads to take our own photographs of our hands to represent different emotions. Claire then taught us how to create our own stamps and produce a piece of art using a stamping technique. Finally, Claire showed us how to create our own Stop Motion animations! This was really exciting as we were able to use technical equipment such as tripods to take photographs and then import the photographs into an animation to create a stop motion animation. Our work will be sent to the Town Hall to feature in an exhibition!

In English, we have explored Arabian Nights. This has been really interesting as we are finding out about other cultures through our writing. During Guided Write, we wrote letters to Claire to thank her for coming to our school. The children were so polite and their writing was fantastic!

We have all been given usernames and passwords for Times Tables Rockstars! This is an online programme where each child has their own rockstar avatar and competes in 'festivals' (competitions) to improve their times tables fluency. The more you do, the more coins you earn to improve your rockstar status! Please encourage your child to go on this at home to improve our knowledge for Year 6.

During transition, we explored lots of different books. This promoted lots of wonderful discussion and at the end, we held a vote to decide which book should be our class novel for the start of Year 6. It was lovely to see children discussing the books and sharing their opinions on different texts. Mrs Holcroft may even buy some of the books for us so we can read them individually next year!

Welcome back everyone!

We've had a very busy start to our final term. This week, in Maths, we have been exploring angles further. We have been solving problems to find missing angles from straight lines, squares, rectangles and even folded rectangles. Some of this was challenging but we rose to the challenge and used our problem solving skills, applying out previous knowledge! On Wednesday, we had a 'maths morning' and teachers from other schools came to watch our Singapore Maths. As always, the children tried their best and our visitors were very impressed!

In English, we have started to look at stories from other cultures. We discussed the story of The Lost Pearl and wrote diary entries from the point of view of the main character. We also started our new class novel, The Girl of Ink and Stars. So far, we are really enjoying this book! It is lovely to see such fantastic attitudes towards reading in our class!

In DT this week, we started our Food Technology unit. We tasted fruits and predicted which season they grew in. Next week, we are going to be designing our own menus!

We started our Transition to Year 6 this week! Even though we are still with Miss Kelly, it is still important to fully prepare for Year 6. This week, we started our transition booklet and discussed the roles and responsibilities of being in Year 6. We are lucky as we are able to go into the Year 6 classroom and visualise what it will be like when we are in there!

We really enjoyed our after school clubs this week, including FitClub, Pop Choir and Debate Club! I was so impressed with some children's manifestos!

Attendance: 96% Well done everyone!

We've had a wonderful final week of the first summer half term! Our week started off with a fantastic trip to Chester Zoo! We found out some amazing facts and we were amazed by the animals such as lions, giraffes and elephants! The children loved the bat cave even though some of the bats left our jumpers full of little surprises! It was a fantastic day and the children's behaviour was outstanding. I was so proud of you all!

It was a very busy day on Tuesday as we had members of our class represent the school in the Cricket and Rounders competitions! Our Cricket team won the tournament and our rounders team just missed out and achieved second place! They showed excellent team spirit and were really proud of their achievements! Well done to both teams!

Jude had an exciting Tuesday as he was accepted to be part of the St Helen's Representative Team! I took him to Goodison and we had a wonderful afternoon! I was proud to stand by his side! Well done Jude!

On Thursday, we had Sports Day! The children's behaviour was fantastic and they had a lovely day! Well done to everyone for competing!

We've had a busy yet exciting week in Year 5!

Firstly, on Monday, we enjoyed a day at St Austin's Primary School. They invited us to their school to celebrate an International Enterprise Day. We were put into teams with their Year 6 pupils and were given a country to represent for the day. Our task was to create a restaurant in the style of the country that we were representing. We had to think about table design, menus, the native language and had to create a presentation showing our research at the end of the day. We had a wonderful time meeting new friends and exploring a new school. We are so grateful to St Austins for having us for the day! We are hoping to invite them back to our school next year!

It was a very exciting day on Wednesday as some of our class were interviewed for CBBC Newsround as part of their General Election Coverage. The children were asked what they would do if they were Prime Minister. They gave some wonderful responses and I was so proud of their excellent behaviour. We will be told when they will be on TV later in the month!

On Friday, we had another trip! We were lucky enough to be invited to Old Trafford Cricket Ground and watch LCCC play a cricket match! Even though some of our class members are on the cricket team and we do cricket in PE, most of the class had never had the opportunity to watch a cricket match before! We held banners up and supported LCCC! We also got to join in a range of fun activities such as climbing walls, scalextric, dance and martial arts! A great day was had by all!

Attendance: 100% Well done everyone!

What a fantastic week we've had!

In English this week, we have explored Poetry. We have discussed the features of poetry, such as alliteration, metaphors and similies and finished our week off by writing our own Poetry around the stimulus 'A Recipe to Make the Teachers Mad!' I was so impressed by the children's creative writing!

We have moved on to our new Science unit 'Human Development.' For our first lesson, we created a human development timeline, from birth to old age. This was a fun, practical way to learn all about human development.

In Computing, we learnt how to put furniture into our houses using the Online Warehouse. Our houses are looking like millionaire's houses! They look fantastic!

In Guided Reading, we created a presentation in groups all about our Guided Reading books. We worked so well together and enjoyed doing research on the computers.

We've had a lovely week in Year 5 this week!

In Maths, we finished our work on decimals. We finished out work of by multiplying and dividing whole and decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. Most children are confident with this now and this has been sent home as homework. Please ask a member of staff if you are unsure.

In English, the children wrote some fantastic informative pieces on Rainforests of the World! The children researched rainforest facts using the internet, created their own success criteria and wrote their final report. They all used a formal style of writing and were very informative.

In Art, we used viewfinders to look at intricate detail more carefully and then sketch these details in our sketch books. The children really enjoyed doing this and were very proud of their sketches.

In Computing, we enjoyed using our new programme 'Sketch Up.' We are created our own houses on the programme and we are intrigued to see what more we can do! The children were desperate to use it during Golden Time too!

We were caught reading on Thursday by Mrs Threkeld enjoying some reading time in the library! We love going in there on a Thursday, reading for pleasure and then reading our class novel together!

A big well done to the children in our class who competed in the Athletics competition at Haydock High this week! We are proud of you!

I am really proud of everyone's super attitude to learning as some of us were unsure about decimals at first. We will continue working on this after half term.

In English, we have worked on our descriptive writing skills. We have learnt how to write metaphors and similies and we also changed the position of subordinate clauses. On Wednesday, we found new ambitious vocabulary and discovered their definitions n the dictionary. On Thursday, we tried to use these words in the correct contexts in our Creative Writing.

On Monday, we had our visit to Christ Church to celebrate Easter. It was a lovely afternoon and the children's behaviour was fantastic. I was very proud of you all!

Yeat 5 have worked extremely hard this week!

This week, we have had assessments. I am so proud to say that the children have done brilliantly and have really shown off their progress from Year 5 so far! We have completed SPaG, Writing, Reading and Maths assessments and the children are really proud of their own results! Well done!

In Science, we completed a fair test to measure what had the biggest effect on air resistance, weight or size. The children chose their own resources to create a parachute and created their own fair test. They had to think about what things they could change and what things must stay the same so that they could make the investigation a fair test. It was a great lesson involving team work and scientific enquiry!

In Computing, we learnt how to change variables on the Flow Chart. This was a little tricky at first, however everybody succeeded! In Art, the children looked at the work of David Hockney and responded to his artwork.

Thursday was a fantastic day as almost half of our class graduated from Children's University at Liverpool Hope! Children's University is a celebration of exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours. Some children from Year 5 and across the school graduated because of their attendance in after school clubs. It was a lovely day and the children had a great time!

It's been a very productive week in Year 5!

In Maths, we came to the end of our mid year revision. The children really wowed us with their new knowledge and completed the mid term tests with ease! Next week, we are moving on to decimals.

In English, we explored our text 'Secret of the Scarab Beetle' further. We created our own PEE style questions and inferred answers from the text. We also wrote a descriptive piece about Horace's Grandad's old cellar and ensured that we added expanded noun phrases in our writing. We are really enjoying this books as a class!

In RE, we read the parable of the adulterous woman. We discussed what justice meant to us and what it really means. We debated whether we agreed with Jesus and presented our opinions to the class. I was so proud of the way that we discussed certain prejudices and how we don't judge and treat others with respect and dignity.

In Science, we identified the effects of friction on moving objects. We learnt that friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another or the action of one object rubbing against another, which tends to slow it down or stop it completely. We undertook a fair test to investigate which surface would have the most friction so that 2p does not slide as easily.

Another wonderful week has flown by in Year 5!

This week in English, we encountered a new book, ‘Tuesday’ by David Weisner. The book has very few words so we had to work out what had happened! There were police, dogs and flying frogs! We wrote police reports all about the mysterious ongoings and asked questions to further our understanding. Next week, we will be writing a newspaper report all about the events!

In Maths, we have learnt how to subtract fractions in a number of different ways. We now know how to subtract like fractions with different denominators and can work out whether we should turn them into mixed numbers or improper fractions to make it possible! I am very proud of your progress.

In Science, we learnt all about gravity and discovered that the mass of something is measured in newtons. We used newton meters to measure the mass of items and predicted how quickly they would fall to the ground.

In Art, we drew self-portraits, sketching details by looking in mirrors. We actually realised that we had some features that we didn’t even know about! We also found out that our eyes are in level with the tops of our ears!

We enjoyed Bikeability this week and can’t wait to get back on our bikes next week!

In Topic, we mummified tomatoes! We learnt all about the mummification process and designed step by step instructions. We are having great fun learning about the Ancient Egyptians and are also enjoying our class novel ‘Secret of the Scarab Beetle.’

Some boys from Year 5 represented the school in a football tournament on Thursday and they came second! Their behaviour was fantastic and they won every match bar one! Well done boys! You represented our school brilliantly!

Welcome back everyone! We've had a great start to the term!

This week, we have explored the book 'The Flying Books of Morris Lessmore.' When we opened the book on Monday, we held the iPad over it and the pages came alive! This really inspired our writing! We imagined that we were caught in the hurricane, just like Morris! This was easy to do as after using the iPad, we really felt like we were there! We then recapped the rules for interrupted speech and wrote descriptively, describing the library that Morris encounters! I am so proud of your attitude towards your work Year 5! We are developing into wonderful writers!

In Maths, we have been subtracting fractions by changing the denominators then simplifying them. We are really enjoying our fraction work and are becoming very confident! Next week, we will multiply fractions.

In Topic, we started our work on the Ancient Egyptians. We researched using the iPads and non-fiction texts and then created a presentation to teach others. A big well done to everyone who brought in their projects from over the half term! They are amazing and they are proudly displayed on our Topic wall. We are really enjoying our new class novel 'The Secret of the Scarab Beetle' by W Meyer. We are really interested to see what will happen to the main character, Horace, as so far he doesn't seem to be having an easy time at his new school!

During our Science session at Haydock High, we learnt how to make an electrical circuit. We recognised simple circuit symbols and created a circuit from a circuit diagram. We found out what parallel circuits were and created these. If there is a break in the circuit, the electricity will not flow. As always, our behaviour was impeccable and the children made me very proud!

We had a lovely time at Haydock Library, taking part in a session exploring the love of books to celebrate World Book Day. This week, our challenge is to read 50 pages in a week! Can you do it?

It is Bikeability next week. Children taking part will need to come to school in their own clothes, with their bike and their helmet. Please ensure that you wear outdoor clothes as the majority of the day will take place outdoors.

Have a lovely weekend,

We've had a great week in Year 5!

Firstly, I'd like to say a big well done to everyone as we completed our sessions at Parr Baths and everyone has made so much progress! Children who were not confident in the water are now swimming brilliantly and lots of children passed their KS2 target of swimming a length using a recognised stroke unaided. The children were very proud of their achievements and I was too!

In English this week, we were given our very own dragons! We had to debate whether our dragon was the best using adverbs of possibility and modal verbs. We also discussed our dragon's powers and appearance in a character description in our Guided Write session. I am so impressed with your enthusiasm for writing Year 5!

In Topic, we learnt all about Viking longhouse. We discussed the features of the longhouses and created an advertisement for our perfect Viking house! That sums up our Vikings topic for this half term. Next half term, we are exploring Ancient Egypt and I am so excited to see your home learning projects!

In RE, we made our own Passover meal. We learnt all about the foods that Jews eat to celebrate Passover such matzah, charoset, bitter herbs, a boiled egg and chicken. We tasted these foods and enjoyed our own Passover meal!

We had great fun at the Valentines Disco. Pictures are below!

We had a great day on Tuesday celebrating Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day was all about posting appropriate images online and ensuring that we make a positive impact online. We had fun in the Selfie Booth, ensuring that our images were safe and we were happy with them to go online. Year 5 then taught the rest of the school about the importance of staying safe online in assembly on Friday morning!

Well done to all of our super readers who completed our Reading Challenge! We will be doing another Reading Challenge next half term!

This week, we returned to Haydock High to take part in another Science lesson as part of our transition! We took part in a chemistry lesson and learnt all about the PH Scale. We learnt that a PH Scale indicates whether a liquid is an acid or an alkali. We used the universal indicator on household liquids and tested how acidic they were. We then recorded our results in a table. It was brilliant to see how excited the children were about Science!

In English, we have started our new unit on debates and arguments. We recapped fact and opinions and learnt about emotive language and the effect that it has on the reader. We are really looking forward to writing our own balanced argument about How to Train your Dragon next week!

In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting fractions with denominators which are multiples of the same number. We have really improved doing this and we are proud of our progress so far!

In RE, we learnt about the Synagogue. We discussed the different features and objects in a Synagogue. We also created some Artwork for display.

We had our Computing session at Haydock High this week. We embedded our learning on HTML codes and added images and videos to our websites!

In PE, we worked on our passing skills and took part in a team game. We are really enjoying our Rugby sessions!

Our Year 5 Reading Challenge is back! How many times can you read for fun in 2 weeks?

Attendance:  98% this week- much better!

We've had a great week this week!

In Maths, we have started our work on Fractions. I'm thrilled that the children have been saying things such as 'I never liked fractions before but I do now!" Everyone is realising that actually, fractions are only numbers! So far, we have learnt how to convert fractions from mixed to improper and improper to mixed. We created posters to help us remember the methods for this! A picture of our posters has been sent home to help with homework. We have also recapped how to create equivalent fractions and compare and order fractions using pictoral and abstract methods. I am very impressed with your progress so far Year 5!

In RE, we represented Judaism through Art. The children created some beautiful collages using the signs and symbols of Judaism and used oil pastels to create their artwork.

In Topic, we learnt all about Lindisfarne, a Viking raid. We wrote newspaper reports about this raid on the iPads and next week, we are going to write these up in our books properly. We are really enjoying making links between our class book, How to Train your Dragon, and the Vikings.

In Design and Technology, we created templates for our phone cases. Next week, we will be cutting out our felt and then starting to sew them to create our phone cases!

Attendance:  90% this week- we've had lots of illnesses again!

We've had a very busy week in Year 5!

At the start of our week, we went to Haydock High School to take part in a Science lesson! We learnt how to use a bunsen burner and then heated water up. We then recorded the temperature of the water and recorded it every minute. In the end, our water was bubbling ferociously which meant that it was at boiling point! The children were brilliant and they loved learning new Science skills.

In English, we have explored poems by Roger MgGough and Michael Rosen. Some of these contained lots of punctuation and some of them contained none! We ended our week by writing our own Free Verse poems.

In Science, we learnt all about the movements of the Earth and other Planets in the solar system. We learnt that Mercury revolves around the sun in 88 days so their year is 88 days! Ask your child to wow you with their new learning about the solar system!

We were so lucky as we got to go to another session at Haydock! On Thursday, we did a Computing session! This was in line with our current Computing unit as we learnt how to create HTML codes and create our own website! Next time we go, we will be inserting videos and images on to our pages!

In PE, we enjoyed our weekly swimming session and it is clear that the children are really progressing! We also enjoyed our Rugby session!

We took part in an E-safety session all about staying safe online delivered by the Catch 22 Team. This reinforced our rules about having private social media profiles and making sure that what we post online is safe.

Please make sure that your child completes their measurements for their phone case. We will be designing our templates on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend,

WB 9.1.2017

It's been a lovely week in Year 5 this week.

In Maths, we have been using and applying our arithmetic skills by solving problems. We have had some tricky 3 and 4 step problems to solve, but we found that when we break the problem down and think about the steps, they are actually quite simple and we can achieve! We are now much more secure with formal methods of multiplication and division so well done everyone for working so hard!

In English, Year 5 have been scaring me! We have been writing our own mystery and spooky stories this week. The children have learnt how to add adverbials successfully and how to punctuate them correctly. Their writing has really impressed me! Next week, we are moving on to poetry.

In Science, we researched our favourite planet and created a poster about it! We love using the computers and iPads to research.

In Topic, we created our own Viking longships and annotated them. Some of our ships were very impressive with fantastic dragons on the front to scare the enemy!

We've had a great start to 2017!

This week, we have started our English unit about short stories, particularly mystery and spooky stories! We have enjoyed reading and analysing a selection of short stories and we are looking forward to writing our own next week!

We started our Swimming session at Parr Baths this week. The children behaved brilliantly and I am looking forward to seeing their swimming skills progress over this half term. We also started Rugby with Coach Paul. This was a new sport for most of us and everyone was keen to learn new skills.

In Maths, we are learning how to divide using bus stop or chunking method. We found that bus stop was the most efficient but chunking helps when dividing by big numbers. Homework this week is to divide using bus stop. Please come and see me if you have any problems.

In Topic, we started our new unit about the Vikings. We learnt that the Vikings invaded York and that Britain was a very sought after place in the Vikings' opinions!

We had a fantastic assembly to celebrate our Outstanding grade from Ofsted! We sent balloons off and we are really excited to see where they land! We are so proud to be a part of the Grange Valley Family!

It's been a fantastic end to a fantastic half term!

We've had lots of fun this week. We started the week with our fantastic KS2 Polar Express performances! Well done to all of the children involved- every performance was wonderful! We had our KS2 Christmas Party on Tuesday which was great fun! The children had a boogie and then enjoyed a delicious buffet donated by the parents! Thank you!

Dancers and Choir went to both Heyeswood and Christ Church to perform and their behaviour was outstanding and they brought Christmas cheer to everyone!

We have had a very arty week completing Christmas cards, calendars for 2017 and tiles to complete our Art unit. We are very talented in Year 5! There are lots of pictures of our fun filled week below!

A big thank you to all parents for your support over an amazing term in Year 5. I'm sure you'll agree, it has been filled with fun and learning and the children have had a great start to UKS2. Thank you also for all of your involvement in the Christmas plays and donations offered over the past few weeks.

Finally, thank you for all of your gifts. It is very kind of you and we really appreciate it!

We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year filled with happiness!

It's been a great week in Year 5 this week!

In Maths this week, the children learnt how to do long multiplication. It was tricky at first, however we are now getting the hand of it! This is your homework this week so keep practising so you can improve!

This week, I sent home updated passwords for Education City and Active Learn Primary. There are a range of fantastic games and activities for the children to do on these sites. I assign tasks on Active Learn so the activities are pitched at your child's grammar level. Please try to complete these weekly.

In English, we are exploring the Waitrose Christmas advert, which is based on 'Coming Home' by Michael Monpurgo. We discussed the setting using similies, metaphors and personification. The children came up with some beautiful descriptive sentences which set wonderful images in our minds.

In Science, the children classified and sorted materials. They discussed vocabulary such as durable and transparent.

The children really enjoyed the pantomime on Thursday, Hunchback of Notre Dame! Now that it is December, we are slowly getting into the Christmas Spirit! We can't wait for all of the activities that we have planned in school!

What a great week we've had!

This week in Maths, we continued to explore formal methods for multiplication. So far, we find the partitioning method to multiply 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers the best. Although this is tricky, Year 5 are rising to the challenge so well! In class, we now have a times table competition chart on the wall. This allows the children to visually see which times tables they know and which they have to learn. Hopefully, we will learn them all by Christmas!

This week in English, we wrote a newspaper article all about the fight scene in Romeo and Juliet. The children wowed Miss Wareing with their ambitious vocabulary! It is fantastic to see the children excited about Shakespeare! Last week, I set Year 5 a reading challenge to see who could read 10 times in 2 weeks. So far, everyone is involved and are really enjoying reading their books for fun! Keep it up Year 5!

This week, the children decorated and filled our shoe boxes to be sent to disadvantaged children. It was lovely to see the children being so thoughtful when decorating the shoe boxes. Thank you parents for your kind donations! We will be making a difference to many disadvantaged children's Christmas'!

In Topic, we learnt all about the features of a mountain. We learnt some new technical vocabulary such as : snow lines, tree line and outcrop. The children labelled their mountains with these features. We are getting excited about International Mountain Day on 8th December!

Attendance:  95% this week! Let's improve for next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Wow! This week has flown by!

Firstly, we had very important visitors, Ofsted, in on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. We don't know the outcome of their visit yet, however I would like to say thank you to the children for their impeccable behaviour and for showing off what we do best - learning and having fun! I am so proud of you.

This week, we started our work on Shakespeare! So far, we have explored the plays Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet! At first, the children were a little unsure about Shakespeare and assumed that it would be boring but actually, we now love it! We have translated Shakespearean language to modern day language and written diary entries as characters in Romeo and Juliet. I can't wait to see what we get up to next week!

In Maths, we have proved that we are now secure with column multiplication. The children are so independent now and use resources to help them if they need them. Next week, we will move on to long multiplication. Make sure that you keep practising your times tables!

In Topic this week, we explored the positives and negatives of mountain tourism. There were lots of good and bad things that we didn't know about! Then, we held a debate with half of the class on the 'for' side and half of the class on the 'against' side. It was a very heated debate but we had lots of fun using our persuasive techniques and facts as our evidence.

To celebrate Anti-Bullying week, we explored the characters in our class book, Wonder, and discussed different scenarios of bullying and how the characters must feel. We then role-played these scenarios and wrote in role of the characters.

It was lovely to see some of you at Parents Evening this week. It was great for you to see how well the children are doing and how much they love being in school. You should be very proud of them and their progress in all areas. I will see the rest of you next Monday and Tuesday. As always, we have an open door so if you have any questions or issues, don't hesitate to come and see me.

Attendance:  98% this week! Keep it up!

Have a lovely weekend,

What a brilliant week we've had!

In English, we completed our Persuasive Writing unit with our own piece of persuasive argument. We used cohesive devices and included quotes to support our arguments. Our writing is really improving and we are becoming really confident when writing with a 'formal voice.' Next week, we are exploring the work of William Shakespeare! I can't wait!

In Maths, we have learnt all about multiplication of 2 digits by 1 digit. We found that there were many methods to solve multiplication problems, including partitioning, column method and using number disks. We are continuing with this next week! Just a reminder - keep up the hard work with the times tables as we have realised how important these are!

In Science, we conducted our own experiments surrounding burning. We investigated which materials would burn so this was a very practical session outside! We have been working scientifically for the past term and our scientific enquiry skills are really improving! Well done Year 5!

In PE, we continued with cricket. It is fantastic to see the children's progress. All of the children can now bowl correctly and in a straight line and our batting skills have really improved too. There will be a competition next term for Year 5 Cricket so we are on the look out for good representatives of our school!

We had another great session at Haydock High on Thursday. As always, the teachers were so impressed with our work and behaviour! Haydock High are always so blown away with how good our work is even though we are only in Year 5!

Attendance:  99% this week! Keep it up!

We've had a fantastic start to our second half term!

In Maths, we are learning all about multiplication and this week we have learnt some brand new vocabulary! We have discovered what factors, multiples and common factors are! We have also learnt about prime numbers! We found that we need to be really good at reciting our times tables to help us with these skills. Through lots of discovery, we found that numbers can have more than one factor! These are common factors. Next week, we will be looking at formal methods of multiplication.

In English, we have started our work on Persuasive Writing. We explored lots of different advertisements and the features of persuasive texts. We also found out what modal verbs are and how we can use these to alter the reader's perception of things! We created some fantastic snappy slogans and rewrote texts to make them more persuasive. Next week, we are learning about cohesive devices and we are going to write our own persuasive argument, using quotes to prove our points. I can't wait to read your writing!

We have started our new topic'Magnificent Mountains.' WOW! I love all of your home learning projects! It is clear that so much hard work and effort went into them over half term and they are now proudly displayed on our Topic wall. These projects have already created lots of excitement and curiosity about our new topic which is brilliant to see!

In Art, our new topic is about wild life and nature. We started off this unit by sketching feathers with chalk. This was a lovely therapeutic session where we really showed off our sketching skills.

Our new class book is 'Wonder' by J Palacio. We are exploring this text through Guided Writing and PEE time and we are also reading it every afternoon. The children love the story so far and are interested to see how August, the main character, gets on on his first day in Mainstream School. It is so lovely to see everyone excited about a book and begging me to read it at the end of every day!

Lots of fun was had at our Halloween Disco and everyone looked fantastic and very spooky! We had a very important visit from the Fire Service, who reminded us about how important it is to stay safe during Bonfire weekend. Have fun but stay safe!

Well done to the children who represented our school in the Athletics Competition this week. We are very proud of you! Pictures are below.

Attendance:  99% this week! Our best yet and best in the school this week!

I can't believe I'm writing our last blog of the first half term! This term has flown by!

In English this week, we wrote our own poems. We took inspiration from many different poets and poems to write our own. We completed a poetry workshop and realised that you can write a poem out of anything! At the end of the week, once our poems were perfect, we performed them aloud to the class. Wow! We really have some talented writers and performers. Your poems were beautiful and funny Year 5!

In Maths, we consolidated and refined formal methods for addition and subtraction. We are now really secure with these basics and next half term, we will be moving on to Whole Numbers: Multiplication and Division. Get practicing your times tables as this will really help us next half term!

We finished off our Maya unit and next half term, we are moving on to Magnificent Mountains! Your half term homework is to complete a home learning task all about Mountains. Some of you have told me some of your fantastic plans for your projects and I am so excited to see them!

Our week finished with another transition session at Haydock High. The children's behaviour was outstanding, as always, and they really made me proud.

Have a fantastic half term Year 5. Have a good rest, ready for another brilliant half term full of progress, learning and fun!

It’s been a brilliant week in Year 5 this week!

We have completed a number of assessments this week, which have allowed the children to show off the progress that they have made so far in Year 5. The children completed a writing assessment and really wowed me with their vocabulary, punctuation, embedded relative clauses, subordinate clauses and much more! I am so proud of their progress and their attitude towards Creative Writing. Well done Year 5! The children also completed their first Year 5 Half Termly Spelling Test. They rose to the challenge fantastically. Keep up the hard work as every half term we aim to beat the score from the half term before! The children really showed off their arithmetic skills and it is clear that they are more secure with metal and formal methods of addition and subtraction.

In English this week, we have started to explore Slam Poetry. We have learnt that a poetry ‘slam’ is a competition where poets perform their own poetry. The competition is judged by judges and the audience show their reactions very vocally! We have explored and discussed poems and next week, we will be writing our own ready for a Poetry Slam.

In Topic, we learnt all about the importance of corn and cocoa in the Early Maya Civilization. We held a debate discussing which was the most useful to Mayans. Ask your child a fact about corn or cocoa and they will wow you!

We had a great cricket session with Tim, Chris' Coach, where we focussed on our bowling skills. Tim spotted some children who really impressed him! Well done Year 5.

We loved our trip to Crucial Crew this week! We had a fantastic afternoon where we learnt lots of important lessons for life. We learnt how to react sensibly and appropriately in case of an emergency, how to avoid being a victim of crime and make a contribution to crime prevention and our own personal health. There are lots of pictures of our day below.

Attendance: Year 5 had 98% attendance this week! A big improvement on last week!

We've had another great week in Year 5!

The most exciting part of our week was definitely going to Haydock High School as part of our transition towards high school. We enjoyed an English session with the staff and we are really looking forward to continuing these sessions! During our Guided Writing session, we did a FANTASTIC Hunt in a section of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.' Ask your child what this is all about - they will really impress you!

In English, the children wrote a fantastic set of instructions, telling people how to capture a dragon! They worked so hard to include semi-colons, brackets, a range of adverbials and Year 5/6 words. All of our hard work is paying off as you are producing fantastic writing!

In Maths, we have been consolidating our column addition and subtraction skills. We still need some work on this, particularly with subtraction, so we are continuing this next week.

In Art this week, we improved our mask design ready for our final design next week. In Topic, we learnt all about the Maya writing system and the codices that they use! We were amazed with how clever the Mayans actually were!

The children really impressed me with their Comprehension test scores as part of our assessments. Wow! It is clear that our PEE and Guided Reading sessions are really helping us!

Attendance: Year 5 had 92% attendance this week! It's not our best!

Keep up the good work Year 5!

What a lovely week we have had!

This week, in English, we have moved on to instructional texts. So far, we have identified the features of different instructional texts and learnt how to use colons and semi-colons correctly in bullet point lists. We also learnt how to vary adverbial phrases to give more information to the reader. On Tuesday afternoon, it was our Guided Writing session. During our session, we took part in 'slow writing.' This is where the teacher tells us what every sentence in our writing should consist of. For example, in Sentence 1, you will include a relative embedded clause. This made the children think carefully about what they were writing and the effect that it has on the reader. The children loved this and felt like their writing improved immediately!

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Singapore Workshop on Tuesday! It was a great session, where the children were introduced to addition with numbers up to 1000 000. This provided our foundations for our learning in the week and the children are really improving with this skill. We are hoping to do lots more parents sessions following the success of them throughout the school. You can see pictures of our session below (click on the images to make them bigger).

In Computing this week, we created a splat game with two sprites and gave each sprite different algorithms. Next week, we will be creating algorithms where our sprite will change costumes! In Art, we designed our mask using alternative materials. We have some very talented artists in our class!

We had another great cricket session with Chris. The children worked on their striking skills and are really improving!

The children are doing brilliantly in their weekly spelling tests, with over 2 thirds of the class getting above 80% so far! Keep it up! I am very impressed!

Attendance: Year 5 had 94% attendance this week! Let's try to do better next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 5 Team.

We've had another fantastic week in Year 5! The weeks are already flying by!

In Maths this week, we were posed with a problem. A journalist had written that there were approximately 76 000 people at Old Trafford Football Ground. Year 5 needed to work out he said around and where they had got that number from! We then realised that the journalist had rounded to the nearest 10 000 and this was a good way to show people approximately how many people were there! This kicked off our rounding for the week and Year 5 have done a wonderful job of rounding to the nearest 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000. Some children even used bar charts to show their understanding of place value and rounding and provide a visual help for others! Next week, we are moving on to addition and subtraction.

In English, we learnt how to include relative embedded clauses in our writing, starting with relative pronouns. We also learnt how to use subordinating conjunctions to create subordinate clauses in our writing The children came up with brilliant sentences and are using these to embellish their writing already! We did a fantastic redraft of our writing and it is clear to see the progress that the children are making already! Well done Year 5!

In Science, we used sieves to look at dissolving materials and working Scientifically, trying to find an answer to our questions after making predictions. It was great fun!

The children had another brilliant Cricket session and are still working on their fielding and striking skills. Chris, the Coach, was really impressed with some of our catching! We also had a lovely Art lesson where we designed our Maya mask. We learnt about different religions views of Peace and enjoyed created posters to demonstrate these.

We also had some visitors from the NSPCC in school on Friday, where we took part in a workshop and an assembly. We learnt all about the different kinds of abuse and about children's rights to stay safe. We debated different situations and decided what is appropriate and what isn't. We also learnt that we can contact Childline on 0800 11 11. Childline is free and doesn't come up on your bill and you can ring no matter how big or small your worry is! We are looking forward to raising money for this cause in the upcoming weeks.

I am looking forward to seeing Parents/ Carers at the Singapore Maths lesson next Tuesday 27.9.2016 at 9am. It will be a great opportunity to see the approach in school and how your child is learning key Maths concepts.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 5 Team

Attendance: Year 5 had 99% attendance this week! Let's try to get to 100% next week!

What a wonderful second week we've had!

This week, it has been Roald Dahl Week! We celebrated Roald Dahl's 100th birthday by dressing up as the many wonderful characters in his books! Our costumes were fantastic and we had a brilliant day! Thank you parents for your hard work and effort in making the children look so great!

We also had our Roald Dahl Story Time with parents on Thursday. This was a lovely session, where the children were able to read to their families and enjoy reading some Roald Dahl books for pleasure. Thank you parents for your involvement.

This week, in Maths, we have continued to explore Place Value. We have looked at number patterns and continued to use number disks to strengthen our place value knowledge. Next week, we will explore rounding numbers to the nearest 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000. I'm looking forward to seeing how much the children can impress me!

In Topic, we learnt all about the Maya Gods and Religions. We learnt that Mayans believed that Gods had good sides and bad sides, as some Gods can create earthquakes and floods. We then created our own Gods, which was great fun! Our Art topic also links with Maya and we explored different Maya mask designs. Next week, we will be designing our own.

We had our cricket session with Chris, the cricket coach, this week. We worked on our throwing and catching skills and the children are really looking forward to improving their technique.

In Computing, we created two new levels for our game. We then learnt how to create an algorithm which enabled the level to move on once the sprite touched a certain part of our screen. This was tricky but we are working more on this next week!

Well done for another fantastic week Year 5!

Have a lovely weekend,

Welcome back everybody!

We have had a fantastic start to Year 5! All children have been in school, looking beautiful and with exceptional behavior! The children love their new classroom and feel very comfortable in it! It is lovely to get to work with the children again and they are really rising to the expectations of Year 5!

This week, we have made a super start to the Year 5 Maths Curriculum. We have been learning how to read and represent numbers up to 100 000. We are getting used to using the number disks to represent such big numbers and state what each digit stands for. It is a little more tricky to write the number down and it is easy to forget the 'and' and the 'thousand' so we are working on that more in the upcoming weeks! Well done for a fantastic effort.

In English, we have started to explore our new text Kipling's Jungle Book. It is a classic text, so it is a little more challenging because of some of the archaic language and ambitious vocabulary. Year 5 have took to this brilliantly, however, and are really enjoyed learning more about the text! We have explored the text using PEE techniques and asked our own comprehension questions. We have also revised the rules for punctuating speech correctly.

In Guided Writing, we dug deeper into our class novel Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This was a really effective session where all the children were challenged and really enjoyed quality teaching in writing, through the help of an adult at every table.

We have started our Science topic, Materials and their Properties. We conducted an absorbency experiment, recording our results accurately. We also started our new Maya topic and explored this through Art also. We are looking forward to finding out more about the Mayans!

In Computing, we started our Scratch Developing Games unit. We discussed the components that make a great game and next, we will begin to create our own games.

We voted for the children who we thought would best represent our class as the School Councillors. Each candidate stood in front of the class and stated why they thought they would be the best for the job. We then voted anonymously, as is done in a polling station. Well done to Ryan and Bethany, who won. We are sure that you will do a great job!

Well done everybody for a fantastic first week in Year 5! I am really looking forward to this year!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Kelly and the Year 5 Team
