Welcome to our Year 2 Blog!

Week beginning 18th July

What a fantastic year it has been. the children finished the year off with an incredible residential at Beeston. I'm sure the children couldn't wait to tell you all about it when they got home. I'm sure you would agree that the children have created some memories that will stay with them forever!

Click on the pictures below to see the gallery.

A big thank you for all your support over the year. It has been amazing to see how much the children have grown both academically and in confidence. I wish them all the best throughout their time in Year 3.

Mrs Mavers

Week beginning 4th July

In English the children used their senses to describe our woods. We were challenging each other to use adventurous vocabulary. As we were walking around with our partners listening, looking and feeling our surroundings we recorded all our wonderful ideas. As we were exploring the children discovered some rusty keys hidden at the bottom of a tree. The children were asking each other who they thought the keys belonged to and what they were doing in the woods. some children thought that the keys belonged to The Gruffalo and opened a secret door that led them to a dark tunnel back to school. Some children used the keys to open magical doors and it took them to another world. I was so impressed with the children's creativity. Back in the classroom the children were all eager to start writing about the mysterious keys. Mrs Threlkeld was so excited to hear about what we discovered in the woods. The children told her the keys were ancient. She then challenged the children to use this word in their writing and they did not disappoint. Well done Year 2.

In Maths we have finished looking at 3D shapes. We have been making patterns using the shapes and identify the missing shape in given patterns. the children had to justify their reasons. We even made up our own patterns. I challenged the children to find out what the 10th, 15th and 20th shape in their pattern would be and they had to explain how they worked it out.

Thank you to all the parents that came to our Beeston meeting on Monday. The children and staff are all so excited about this trip and the lovely memories we will be creating together.

Beeston - 18th July for 1 night

Mrs Mavers

Week beginning 27th June

This week in English the children have been reading 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch'. We talked about the sequence of events in the story and wrote a diary in role as Mr Grinling. We also read 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Rescue'. We became newspaper reporters and retold the event of Mr and Mrs Grinling rescuing a helpless Whale on the beach. The children are all beginning to include detail in their writing and a range of punctuation. They are most certainly ready for the challenge in Year 3!

In Maths we have continued to look at 3D shapes. this week we have worked in groups to classify the shapes and discussed the different ways we could do this, The children have also made structures using the shapes. They had to justify their reasons for using certain shapes and explain why they didn't use others. One group made a stable and told me that they selected a cone for the top because the corner and the curved face made it look like a roof. Another group made a table with cubes and cuboids for the legs. They said that they chose those shapes because they have flat faces. If they had used a sphere it would have collapsed because it has a curved face. Super reasoning this week Year 2!

The children came up with some creative story and I enjoyed reading them all. We had stories going to space and children having battles with star wars characters. Some children wrote about the shell turning them into beautiful mermaids. There was even a shell that could turn you into a dog. The children enjoy writing stories and showed off everything that they have learnt.

The children's stories involved the Queen getting an invitation to visit Grange Valley but she had a problem. She lost her favourite pair of knickers so what will she wear on her visit?

In Maths we have been using the inverse to check our calculations. The children are getting better at finding the answer and reasoning about it. We have discovered that its not just about getting the answer right but its about justifying our answers.

n Friday we had a lovely Garden Party. It was a shame about the weather but it certainly didn't dampen the children's spirits. We managed to get outside for some food and then we all gathered in the hall for a lovely sing along.

This week we have all enjoyed an art day. The children have been finding out about Vincent Van Gogh and created some of their own masterpieces.

The children worked together to research Van Gogh and find about his life and his famous artwork. Did you know that Van Gogh only sold one painting when he was alive. His paintings became famous after he died.

The children explored the colours used in his painting and talked about the mood and emotion that the paintings convey. We used this when creating our very own artwork.

Together we created a whole class painting of The Starry Night.

We also looked carefully at the bright yellow sunflowers

This week the children have had so much fun writing riddles. We have been research different fruits and vegetables and recording our findings in a mind map. Then we discussed which clues are the easiest and which might be more challenging for the reader. We have also been looking at different ways we could start our clues and tried to use a range of conjunctions to extend our ideas such as but, or, when, if. The children enjoyed reading their riddles to each other. I wonder if you can guess this one....

I hang on tall trees with small green leaves

I am bigger than a grape but smaller than a melon

There are many different kinds of me

I can be red or green

I have black pips inside me

People use me in their delicious pies

I begin with a and end with e

What am I?

In Maths this week we have been finding out about money. The children have been counting coins and notes and recording the amount of money. This is something you can support your child with at home. Week beginning 28th March

The children had so much fun writing their reports on being healthy that they decided to write a report on African Animals. The children took an interest in Africa when we have been exploring the world and the 7 continents. At the start of the week I set each table up with a focus on a different animal found in Africa. The children decided which animal they wanted to research- Zebras, Elephants, Crocodiles, Giraffes or Tigers. They used books, ipads and the class computers to research their chosen animals. They then used this information to write fabulous reports. They were so impressive that we decided to put them on display.

In Maths the children have been looking at rotating shapes quarter and half turns clockwise and anticlockwise. I was so impressed with how quickly the children understood this concept. We even used tracing paper to rotate shapes and draw them in their new places.

Over the holidays I have asked the children to find out about Neil Armstrong or Tim Peake as our Topic next term is Earth and Beyond. I look forward to forward to finding out what the children have discovered.

Have a lovely 2 weeks.

Mrs Mavers

Week beginning 21st March

This week in English the children have been using their Science knowledge to write a report about being healthy. First the children used books and Ipads to research and find out further information. We put key vocabulary in a mind map to help us when we came to write the report. The children made sure they used sub heading in their reports to group the information. I was very impressed with how much the children knew and how well they created their reports.

In Maths the children have continued to look at 2D shapes. Today the children looked at moving shapes on a grid using directional language. We challenged each other to find different possibilities.

On Wednesday the children had a visit from St John's ambulance. They told the children what to do in an emergency. The children were given paper phones which they used to practise calling 999. They talked about when they might need to call 999 and we talked about the questions they might get asked. I was very pleased with how grown up the children were when role playing and the questions that they were asking the team from St John's ambulance.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend.

Mrs Mavers

Week beginning 14th March

In Maths we have started to look at 2d shapes. The children are very good at naming common 2d shapes and identifying how many sides and vertices they have. We have even looked at whether a shape is symmetrical by identifying lines of symmetry. Using all this knowledge the children then sorted different shapes. They had to explain to each  other how they had sorted their shapes. I then challenged the children by showing them some grouped shapes but with the missing headings. They worked with their talking partners to discuss how they thought the shapes had been sorted. Very impressive Year 2!

Magical Maths Club

Professor Poopenshtinken, the mathematical genius, came back to visit us this week. He led an assembly for our children where he claimed to be the greatest mathematician ever. The Professor stunned our KS1 children by reading someone's mind. He was able to work out a number that they had calculated using his amazing tricks. With KS2 the Professor squared the numbers 55 and 106 instantly in his head. The children were mesmerised! He told all the children that he could teach them to do the same tricks using only the power of numbers.

The Professor's friends will be coming back to school after half term (on Mondays starting 22nd February) to run super fun Magical Maths Clubs. There are separate clubs for KS1 and KS2 and they will run for 5 consecutive weeks. PLEASE NOTE - The price is £31 not £37 as shown on the leaflet. This is because it is a 5 week club instead of 6 weeks. Call 01744 776110 or visit www.magicalmathsclub.com/haltonsthelensandwarrington to book. Professor Poopenshtinken has told me that a lot of people have booked already and places are going quickly so book now to avoid disappointment.

Week beginning 11th January

During PE this week the children have been practising their throwing and catching skills. As we got better and better we increased the distance to throw. The children also tried throwing and catching with different types of balls. We found the larger balls easier to catch. We discovered that it was important to look at the ball when catching.

On Wednesday we went on our local walk. The children all had a map to follow and a chart with different human and physical features to spot. The children could point out different types of houses and discuss what type of house they live in. I was so proud with how sensible the children were following the route. We even brushed up on our road safety.

We have been reading Funnybones by Alan Ahlberg this week. The children were loved these books so we decided to write our own stories about the rickety, not so scary skeletons. We had some very descriptive stories so we decided to create a Funnybones display to share with you all. This book also inspired us to look at different skeletons. The children explored skeletons of humans and other animals looking at the different bones that they have. They used these images to create our own skeletons.

Week beginning 4th January

Happy New Year!

The children have made a fantastic start to the new Year. We have been reading the Tiger Who Comes to Tea this week. The children discussed the characters in the story and given reasons for their actions. I have been impressed with the children's attitude to their writing as they can all explain what I am looking for in their writing. We have been focusing on adventurous vocabulary this week, making a word bank of all the exciting new words that we could use in our writing to make it interesting to read. We have found lots of exciting new words in our class stories. If you find any when reading with your child at home let me know and we can put it in our word catcher.

In Maths we have started to look at division. The children have been using counters to share given amounts equally and have all written the matching division equations. When discovered that dividing by 2 is the same as halving. If you would like to support your child at home, you could practise recalling halves of numbers up to 20.

In Geography this week we have been finding out about human and physical features in our town. The children used satellite images of Haydock to locate different human and physical features. Next week we will be going on a local walk, using maps and compasses. I wonder if the children will be able to identify some of the different human and physical features. We also be looking at the different homes that we live in. Why not discuss with your child what type of house they live in- detached, semi-detached, terraced, bungalow etc.

Have a lovely weekend

Week beginning 30th November

It is starting to feel and look more like Christmas in school this week. The children have been busy perfecting their Nativity ready to perform for you all next week. There will be 3 performances -

Tuesday 8th December – 9am for YR Parents,– 2.30 pm for Grandparents and Heyswood

  Thursday 10th December – 9am for Y1 and Y2 Parents

We have also decorated our magnificent tree. There is one in school and the other we will be able to see when we visit Christchurch.

Although it is beginning to feel more like Christmas we have been very busy with our Maths and English. In Maths we have been using our multiplications to come up with our own word problems. The children enjoyed challenging each other with their word problems and seeing if they came up with the right answer. In English we have read the story Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy. The children were all inspired by this book. We thought about all the things we would take to the moon if we went up in a rocket like baby Bear. The children used conjunctions to explain their reasons. We then planned our own story about going to the moon. The children thought hard about their beginning, middle and end as we used this to show off our progress in writing.

Have a lovely weekend

Week beginning 23rd November

What a week!

In maths this week the children have continued to count in steps of 2,5 and 10. We have been using objects to help us solve multiplication problems and exploring different ways of recording problems. We have used the signs x, + and = and we have also been thinking about what the signs mean.

We have been making Christingles and thinking about what the different parts represent.

We have also been practising for our Nativity- 'Wriggly Nativity'. The children have been working so hard and we can't wait for you to see it.

The children will be visiting Christchurch on Wednesday 16th December. We have been given the task to create decorations for a Christmas tree in the theme of 'Stable and Animals'.

Next week we will be exploring the 5 times tables. You can support you child be practicing this times tables at home.

In English we have been reading The Princess and the Frog. The children came up with exciting alternative ending for the story. We decided that when the Princess kissed the frog, she would turn into a slimy frog. We also write diaries in role as the Princess. The children have been showing off there knowledge of conjunctions and are much more confident when using apostrophes. We have also been working hard on our letter formation. Please keep practising this at home.

In Science this week we become force detectors. We worked in groups to find different forces around school. When we found the force we talked about the direction of the force.

Next week is 'walk to school week'. Please try and walk to school even if it is only part of the way.

Week beginning 9th November

This week we have been talking about Remembrance Day. The children created their own acrostic poem for Poppy and wrote a lovely piece of writing including lots of facts about Remembrance Day. The year 6 children put together a fantastic assembly for us all to watch. During this time we had our 2 minute silence.

In Science this week we have been talking about forces. The children explored different toys and discovered that they needed to use the forces push, pull or both to make something happen. The children worked well in groups to sort the toys into a Venn diagram.

On Tuesday it was 'Toothy Tuesday'. We talked about the importance of brushing our teeth. The children all received a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Thank you to all you all for attending Parents Evening. It was so nice to share your child's progress with you.

Week beginning 2nd November

I hope you all had a lovely half term break!

This week we have started to find out about Traditional Tales. The children worked in small groups to explore a selection of Traditional Tales. They discussed the good and the bad characters, the different settings and the similarities between the plots. They then shared their findings with the rest of the class.

In maths this week the children have continued to show of their mathematical skills. We have been learning all about subtraction. I have been particularly impressed with the way the children have explained how we subtract 2 digit numbers using tens and ones and even demonstrating this through the column method. The children enjoy using their resources to explore the different problems that they are presented with.

The children have been talking about how we can keep safe on Bonfire Night. The fire service came into school to tell the children all about the dangers. Please remember... If you are having or going to a bonfire party over the next few days -  enjoy but keep safe!

During our computing session the children used a Painting Programme to create lovely firework pictures. They selected a range of tools to create different effects such as spray, fill, draw.

We have also been busy making our Poppies for the Weeping Window that will be created in the hall.

Parents Evening- 12th November

Week beginning 19th October

We have had a lovely week as usual in Year 2 and we are all ready for a half term rest!

We finished the week off with a 1960's theme day. I was so impressed with the effort you all went to. The children all looked amazing. We had so much fun in the hall with Year 1 decorating biscuits, sewing flowers, playing twister and dancing to Beatles songs.

In dance this week the children polished off their dance to 'Hairspray'. It was that good I thought we should film it and share it with you all.

A selection of 8 boys were chosen to represent the school in a football tournament. The children managed to reach the final in the LA sports competition, at Ruskin Drive. The team Won 3 games, drew 2 and lost their last one (score 3-2) which was the final. Thank you to all the parents that went along to support the children.

Week beginning 12th October

In English this week we have been making our own information books about Pets. The children started by identifying the different features that we need to include such as a contents page, headings, facts, glossary, captions and labels. We then used books and Ipads to research information for our chosen pets. The children really enjoyed creating their own books and I was pleased with the way they discussed the different features that they had used.

In Maths this week we have started looking at subtraction. The children have been subtracting tens and ones in lots of different ways. I have asked them all to practise counting forwards and backwards in 10's from any given number.

The nurse came to visit us this week. She told why it is important to wash are hands. We washed are hands and used a special gel to show us if we had washed our hands properly. The children could see the germs under a uv light. The children will have the opportunity to get their flu vaccine in school next half term. The nurse talked to the children about the flu and how we can stop spreading germs. Remember catch it, bin it, kill it. A letter will go out next week regarding the flu vaccination.

In Science we have been making shakers. The children decided on what filling they would like to put in their shaker to make the best sound. This created a nice discussion about the different sounds that we were able to make. The children have decided that they would like to investigate the different sounds that we can make next week.

1960's day- Thursday 22nd October

Week beginning 5th October

We had an amazing day in Liverpool yesterday and I was very impressed with the children's behaviour. When we arrived at Liverpool we walked to 'The Beatles Story', where the children went to a discovery zone. In there we dressed up in 1960's costumes, looked at old vinyl records, played some Beatles songs on a large floor piano and sang 'Yellow Submarine'.

After the discovery zone we had an audio tour around the museum. We found out lots of facts about the Beatles and we all enjoyed looking at the wonderful artefacts.

After lunch we watched Fab 4OD, a short film all about the Beatles. We had water sprayed at us and bubbles blowing in the air. Oh and the chairs tipped back- Mrs Mavers didn't like this bit!

                                                                                      What a fab day!

Week beginning 28th September

In English this week we have been reading the story Oscar got the Blame by Tony Ross. The children have really enjoyed reading this book. It was Oscar's friend Billy who brought mud into the house, dressed the dog in Dad's clothes and put frogs in Granny's slippers - so why did Oscar get the blame? No one ever seemed to be able to see Billy - except Oscar, of course! The children worked in groups to come up with different things that Billy could do to get Oscar in trouble. The children thought that Billy could put spiders in the bath or worms in dad's dinner. We used these ideas to write our own stories. The children have worked hard to remember capital letters for the start of sentences and for names. We have also been working hard on using the correct pencil grip and producing tall, small and lazy letters.

In maths the children have been adding 1 digit numbers and tens. We had the pleasure of our Governors coming to see our maths this week and the were very impressed to see how much the children are enjoying their maths. We have been working hard to explain our methods this week and asking each other how they worked it out. Well done Year 2!

In science this week we have been talking about how we can hear the sounds around us. We found out that if we covered our ears the sound became quieter. We also discovered that we don't need to see the source of the sound in order to hear it. We have been labelling parts of the ear including the ear-drum, outer ear and the auditory canal.

Year 1/2 Trip - Beatles Story- Thursday 8th October

Year 2 Team

Week beginning 21st September

This week we have been finding out about nouns and adjectives and using them in our writing. The children are getting much better at locating nouns and adjectives in our class books. Try asking you child to find an adjective or a noun in their reading books at home. We have also been collecting amazing words in our word catcher. These are adventurous words that we are going to try and put in our own writing to make it even better. So far the children have collected - mysterious, petrified, magnificent and glistening.

In maths this week we have been exploring number patterns. We have particularly looked at numbers going up and down in 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's. The children have worked hard at this as usual. I gave them a challenging number pattern similar to this one -      16,  18, 23, 25, 30, 32, _____ , _____ . Ask your child if they can tell you this missing two numbers.

In Science we have continued to look at sounds around us. The children were given a selection of musical instruments to explore and discuss how they can make a sound. We found out that we needed to bang, pluck, blow or shake the instruments. The children then investigated how they could make the sounds louder or quieter.

In Topic we had a class debate. Well the children became judges from the 'X Factor'. We watched performances from one direction and the Beatles. The judges then commented on who they think would have won the X Factor and why. We have some very strict judges in our class. Simon Cowell better watch out!

Year 1/2 Trip - Beatles Story- Thursday 8th October

Year 2 Team

Week beginning 14th September

This week the children have had a lovely discussion about how they can reach their potential this year. They talked about who can help them and how they can 'Reach for the Stars'. I an really looking forward to seeing how much the children progress this year.

In English we have been reading our class novel 'The Enormous crocodile'. The children worked together in groups to think of the fifth new trick for the crocodile. One group said that the crocodile went to the woods and pretended to be a log. When the children go to sit on the log he will eat them up. Luckily, a kind monkey will come along and save the children. There were so many interesting and entertaining tricks. Well done Year 2.

In Maths the children have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones. They were then set a challenge to find other ways of splitting the numbers. This was a challenging task but the children all persevered and they all were able to talk through their findings.

A big thank you to all those parents that came along to the Year Ahead Meeting. It was so nice to meet you all and discuss how we can support your child this year.

Year 2 Residential

As mentioned at the year ahead meeting, we will be taking the children on a 1 night residential to Beeston. This will take place on Monday 18th July. We strongly believe that this will increase their self-confidence, social and independence skills. This overnight trip will furnish the children with memories that will stay with them for years to come! I will send a letter out with further information within the next few weeks and a meeting will be arranged nearer the time to go through the arrangements and answer any questions you may have.

Year 2 Team

Where has the week gone?

In English we have been reading 'Peace at Last'. The children have enjoyed retelling the story using time adverbials. We also thought of lots of questions to ask Mr Bear about his eventful night. The children were able to use a range of question words and we all remembered to use a question mark.

In Maths the children have been using their knowledge of place value to order and compare numbers. I have been very impressed with the children's mathematical reasoning. They were able to tell me how many tens and ones were in given 2 digit numbers and could justify the order they put them in. Wow! We have also been working on our number formation. This is something you can support your child with at home.

Today the children chose a library book to take home. It is important that all children read for enjoyment and they are all looking forward to sharing their books with you.

Welcome to Year 2!

We have had a fantastic start to the new academic year. The children have really settled in well and we have enjoyed getting to know each other. The children have been so excited to find out about our new learning challenges. We have our Year Ahead Meeting on Thursday 17th September at 5:30pm for you all to come along, meet myself and the Year 2 team and find out what we will be learning, expectations and your chance to ask any questions you may have.

This week we have been busy finding out about two very famous artists, Mondrian and Monet. The children have created work in the style of these artists. We have definitely got some budding artists in this class!

The children have been showing off their writing skills and I am very impressed. Before the Summer holidays we had a visit from the author of Pugalugs. The children enjoyed reading this story and we decided to write a description of Pugalugs using lots of adjectives. Take a look at our wonderful writing.
