W/B 7th July 2014

This week the children have been creating plans to design their new classroom environment. They came up with lovely ideas and could use their geographical skills to create the plans. This week we also had a fantastic day at Blackpool. Year 1 and Year 2 visited the town for the day to continue learning about our Seaside topic. The first challenge for the class was on the coach on the way to see who could be the first to see the Blackpool Tower in the skyline. When we arrived the weather was beautiful and we had a walk up the pier. We then went to watch the circus at the Blackpool Tower. The children absolutely loved this part of the trip and couldn't stop talking about it afterwards. We got to watch performances by clowns, BMX bikers, acrobats, dancers, gymnasts and a very strong man! After the performance we had time to go on to the beach. The children went on a hunt for shells and explored in the rock pools. It was a fantastic day!!! On the way home we stopped off at a rock shop and brought home the special treat!

W/B 23rd June 2014

What a busy week we have had in Year 1, although it has been very exciting!!!!!! This week it was National Sports Week and therefore most of our lessons had a sports theme. We started off the week researching using the Internet to find the   different World Cup groups scores on the Fifa website. In Maths we then used these to create a table of scores and worked   out each of the teams points using the number of games each team won, drew and lost. The children loved this activity on     Monday, however were very sad when they couldn't improve the England's score after the England match this week! On Wednesday we had our Sports Day! Well done to all the children for their brilliant behaviour, involvement and team spirt! Congratulations to the green team who won this year. In class we have also  been looking at the different world flags and sorted them into different groups with different criteria. On Friday the children used their problem solving skills to work out all the different possibilities of creating a football kit using a set amount of colours. They then designed their own football kits. Well done to Aiden who won the competition for the best design.  Below are a selection of pictures from this weeks activities.

We have been looking at each others holiday booklets that the children made over the half term. The children discussed their favourite holidays and where they would like to go. We then used an atlas and google earth to find the destinations on a map. In numeracy we have been looking at time and solving time problems. The children looked at solving problems about finding out when their favourite TV programmes started, how long they were on for and therefore discussed what time would it finish!

The children have also had great fun practising for sports day! We have some fantastic runners in our class. I wonder which house colour will win our class events?

Welcome back everyone to the last half term of the year! Where has the time gone!!!!! Even though it has only been 3 days in school this week, there has been lots going on around school. In Literacy we have been doing lots of activities and games based around our phonics. The children are trying so hard and I can really see a great improvement! In Maths the children have been solving addition and subtraction problems. It is a great way for the children to use their maths knowledge to solve puzzles and problems. Well done Noah for completing a challenge math's problem.

In science we finished off our last lesson in our Space topic. The children investigated my question 'Why does an astronaut float?. They became little scientists and looked at the effect that forces have on different objects.

Today all the children had their class photograph taken. It was lovely to look at the pictures I took in September and see just how much they have changed and grown up! I think they are nearly ready for Year 2.

A huge well done to Harris for getting on top table this week for his brilliant manners around school.

Congratulations to our medal winners this week for always trying to keep safe!

First of all I would like to say a huge well done to all of Year 6 for trying so hard in their SAT's this week. You couldn't have tried harder. You should all be very proud of yourselves!! It was great to see you all smiling and enjoying your special treat.... a visit from the ice-cream man who came into school. It was a great treat for all the teacher's too!!!!!

Year 1 have had a lovely week. In Literacy we have been looking at fantasy stories involving aliens and monsters. We read two fantastic stories ' Here Come the Aliens' and ' Alien's Love Underpants'. The children compared the stories and created their own version of the story. We also got to watch some of the film Monster's Ink film and described the different characters in the story. On Friday we started to plan our own versions of an alien story. The children came up with some fantastic ideas!

Here is an example from one story plan: An alien spaceship lands on the school field and the aliens take year 1's class teddy 'Rainbow Bear'. Miss Jones saves the day by getting rainbow bear in exchange for being turned into an alien herself. Year 1 were from then taught by Miss Jones (the alien).

W/B 5th May 2014

Wow! What a busy week. Year 1 have been working so hard this week. In literacy we have continued our topic 'Fantasy Stories.' We read a fantastic book called The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It was about a little boy who really want to do spells but his master wouldn't let him. When the master was out of the spell lab the little boy made spells that went completely wrong and a magic broomstick came to life. The children drew fantastic pictures of the Sorcerer and came up with lots of adjectives to describe him. The children also described his lab using connectives and adjectives. It is lovely to see how much their writing has improved. They then created their own fantasy setting using figures and a variety of materials. In math's we have been looking at 10 more and 10 less and multiples of 10 to a two digit number. Luckly on a nice day this week we got to go outside and use the large numberline and hundred sqaure to demonstrate the additions.

In PE we have continued to look at basic catching and throwing skills with variety of different equipment. The children competed in a class compition in different challenging games. Well done to the green and yellow team who won the games in the lesson. More points will be added to your school colour team!!!!

On Thursday afternoon we had a visit from Tom, the school teddy bear. Mrs Holcroft told us that his favourite thing was to listen to stories. The children all decided they would like to read to Tom and the other class teddies (Rosie, Rainbow Bear and Sam). It was so lovely listening to the children explaining to Tom how you sound out the unknown words and explaining what has just happened in the story.

Reminders:

  • Due to SAT's next week there will be no morning clubs.
  • Can you please make sure the children only bring water into school in their water bottles.
  • Please can you make sure you try and read with your child every night for 5 -10 minutes and then sign their yellow reading record book. This will also allow for your child's book to be changed on a Thursday aswell as a Monday.

Hope the rain stays off and you all have a great weekend.

Year 1 Team.

W/B 28th April 2014

First of all thank you to everyone who sponsored the children to do sponsored dance this week. The children had great fun on Tuesday and completed the challenge by dancing for full half hour to their favourite songs!! I think I enjoyed it as much as the children did!! Please can I ask that you start collecting in any money and send it back into school as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!

The children have been so excited this week, as on Monday we started to learn about 'Fantasy Stories.' Everyday the children have been listening to stories and watching a variety of clips from films including Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter, The Borrowers, Aliens Love Underpants and many more. We have explored the different settings of these stories and discussed the different characters and magical objects used. The children loved a short video clip of the Chronicles of Narnia. Therefore they have asked if everyday they could listen to a chapter from the classic story book 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.' The children in their writing have described a setting they would like to write a fantasy story about and described their own magical object. On Thursday they also created their own fantasy settings using toy models and materials to create different landscapes.

In Math's this week we have been looking at 3d and 2d shapes. The children are fantastic at understanding shape properties and identifying them in the real world. The children absolutely loved playing the game Shape Who Wants to be A Millionaire as a whole class. We managed to win £500,000 in prize money! We are going to keep playing next week to try and reach the 1 million pound prize!

In ICT we have been learning about the internet and how to type in websites and use them to research a topic. Over the next 4 weeks the children are going to create a simple PowerPoint about the planets to link in with our topic Space. Each child has picked a planet to research, so they might want to do some of their own research at home and bring facts they find into school.

Can I just remind any children who haven't got their PE kits in school to bring them in next.

Can parents please make sure their child has their water bottles in school everyday. This is so the children can choose to have a drink whenever they like and not just at set times of the day.

I hope you have a fantastic bank holiday weekend everyone.

Year 1 Team.

W/B 21st April 2014

Welcome back everyone to the summer term! I hope you all had a great Easter break. It was lovely to hear about what the children have been up to during the holidays. Well done to all the children that turned up on Tuesday having wrote a holiday diary over the break. I am so proud of how hard you are working at home and in school! This term is quite a short one however it is very busy and there is a lot going on in school. First here are just a couple of reminders:

  • Multi skills club is on every Tuesday 3:30 until 4:30 for those children selected last term.
  • RM Maths is still on every Monday at 8:30. It is open to all children in Year 1.
  • Can you please make sure your child has brought their PE kits back into school after the holidays.

We got straight back into our learning when we came back. In Literacy we have continued to look at recounts which we started before the holidays. The children have been ordering personal events and writing their own recounts with time connectives and connectives. I was so pleased that the children all remembered their targets from last term and were trying to make their work even better!

In math's we have been looking at how to find the change from different amounts. The children then used their knowledge to solve money subtraction word problems. We also started our new topic......... Neil Armstrong and space. The children were so excited to learn about what we are going to be looking at over the next few weeks. They wrote brilliant questions that they would like to ask or find out about Neil and his journey. They were amazed when later in the day Neil Armstrong paid a visit to Grange Valley in his time machine to answer their questions. Encourage the children to do as much research as they can at home.

Keep watching the blog for weekly updates and any key information about the term.

Have a great weekend

Year 1 team.

 W/B 31st March 2014

I can’t believe it is the last week of the spring term!!! Where have those weeks gone. Year 1 have had a busy week. In Literacy we all planted cress seeds and then wrote a recount about what we had done. Hopefully when we come back they all will have fully grown. The next day the children looked at their work and discussed things they did well in their writing and also what they could have do better. The children were brilliant at finding the little errors and then rewrote their work to make it even more fabulous! Well done Year 1.

In maths we have been solving Easter word problems. The children are fantastic at this and all could pick out the key information and solve the problems. We have also been looking at making different totals with money. The children are still trying to understand this concept and so the homework over the Easter will help them to explore this further.

This week we also got the chance to visit the church and learn about the Easter Story. The children joined in an Easter egg hunt around the church. In every egg was a piece of a puzzle. When they had solved the puzzle the children noticed it was pictures that retold the Easter story. In the afternoon they also had great fun making a variety of crafts.

This week in our circle time the children discussed about what they would like to be when they grew up. We spoke about what they need to do to be able to follow their dreams. Here are a couple of examples of what the children said.

Kian –“ I would like to be an archaeologist. I love reading about Dinosaurs.”

Daniel P – “I would like to be a high school teacher. “

Owen S –“ I would like to be a Fireman and help other people.”

Joseph R –“ I would like to be a scientist. I really like trying to solve things.”

Megan S –“ I would like to be a vet.”

The children also discussed what they were proud about in each other. It was lovely to see the children praising each other for their achievements and giving each other encouragement to try and improve.

After all the hard work the children got to enjoy an Easter activity day on Friday. They took part in a math Easter egg hunt, designed their own Easter Eggs, made jointed Easter bunny’s and Easter poems/letters. We then got a chance to look at all the fabulous Egg creations for the whole school Design an Egg competition. The designs from all of the children were brilliant!!! Well done everyone.

The winner in Year 1 was Grace F for her Under the Sea Theme Egg.

Well done to all the bronze, silver and gold winners this term as well as the writers of the week.

We also had to say our goodbyes to the lovely Mrs Wilson. You will be greatly missed at Grange Valley. I hope all goes well with your new job, make sure you come back to say hello!

Have a great Easter everyone. Keep safe and I will see you all in the summer term!!

This week in Literacy we have continued to learn about non-fiction texts. We linked this into our topic Florence Nightingale and have now completed our own non-fiction books about Florence. The children have worked super hard and all their books include a title page, contents page, different fact pages with pictures and labels, a glossary, a index and a blurb. The children are so proud of their books they are going to be put on display in the classroom for all to see!!! Keep your eyes peeled!

In math’s we have been learning about how to record data in tables, charts and graphs. We have looked at Venn, Carroll, pictogram and bar charts. They children had great fun on Tuesday carrying out a class survey about our favourite sports and then created various graphs using ICT and drew their own pictograms.

In topic we have continued to look at Florence Nightingale. On Wednesday afternoon a time machine was found on our school field and the children really hoped that maybe Florence Nightingale had come to visited our school. They were so excited when she came into class later in the afternoon. They couldn’t wait to ask her questions about her life and what it is like in her time. Some of the children didn’t want to go home at home time as they had more questions they wanted to ask.

This week we have also been very busy being creative and little gardeners!!! Maybe you might get a special treat on Friday!

 Reminders

RM Maths club is at 8:30 please make sure you only drop your child off at this time as there is no staff to look after them until this time.

W/B 17th March 2014

What a lovely week we have had in Year 1. In Literacy we started the week with a two day story writing challenge with a fun superhero theme. The children listened and watched different stories about Superhero’s. They then designed their own superhero and baddy, thinking about their costumes and what special powers they would have. Once the characters had been decided we planned out our own stories thinking about what could happen in a beginning, middle and end. The children then got to write their stories and read them to the class. The best stories are going to be entered for a Superhero writing competition along with stories from other year groups. We have also continued to learn about non-fiction texts. The children have begun to make their own non-fiction book about Florence Nightingale. This week we have created our title pages including the author and illustrator and then wrote our first two fact pages. We will continue this next week. In numeracy we have been looking at partitioning of numbers. The children really struggled with this at the beginning of the week, but they have worked so hard that today we were discussing thousands and hundred column too!!! Well done. Next week we are going to be learning all about different graphs and how to draw them accurately.

To finish the week off to help support sports relief the children in Year 1 and Year 2 got together to complete a sports challenge in which they had to complete four activities (bean bag throwing, a relay, basketball shooting and a penalty shootout) Well done to all the colour teams for working together in each event. At the end of the afternoon the scores where in…………… In 4th place was the Blue team, in 3rd place was the Red team, in 2nd place was the Yellow team and 1st went to the Green team. W/B 24th February 2014

What a great start to the term we have had in Year 1. First of all we welcomed Mr Briody to our class, who is going to be supporting in Year 1 until late spring. He can already see how fantastic Year 1 is and how hard all the children work.

In Literacy we have been learning all about putting words in alphabetical order and learning how to use our class dictionaries. The children were very good at this and have learnt how to look at the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th letter to find the words. We have also been learning about positional language in our Math’s lessons and the children had great fun programing beebots to give directions and using a beebot computer programme in ICT.

We have also started our new topic ‘Florence Nightingale’. We read a book all about her and then the children told me about her life in our creative writing sessions. The children’s writing was brilliant and I was very proud of them! In particular we were concentrating on using connectives to extend our sentences.

Well done to the bronze, silver, gold and writer of the week winners and also to our new Year 1 football team!!! Lets hope we can always do our best in all the competitions. Training starts on Tuesday 4th 3:30 to 4:30pm.

The children have been working extremely hard this week, as we have been doing our termly assessments! We have been checking our progress in Phonics, Writing, Numeracy and Reading. Well done everyone for all your super hard work!!! New target sheets for Literacy and Numeracy will be sent home after the half term to show what the children will now be working towards. New spellings will also be put in the children’s reading record books.

Along with the assessments the children have been learning all about how to follow, give and write instructions in Literacy. To link into our topic “Fighting Fit” the children followed instructions to make fruit kebabs last week and brown bread this week. The children then wrote their own versions of the instructions including bullet pointed lists, numbered instructions and even imperative verbs!!!! Well done Year 1!

At the beginning of the week in ICT the children have been learning how to give simple oral instructions to make the class robot (me) move around a large floor grid. The children had great fun giving instructions and watching where the robot would go with what they had said. When the children made errors, instantly they were trying to figure out what went wrong and tried to change the instructions they gave. This is very early learning in showing the children how to debug a computer program. Later in the week the children then used these instructions to program a Beebot.

On Tuesday we had a visit from the school nurse, who came to speak to Year 1 about how to look after our bodies. She showed the children how to brush their teeth, wash their hands correctly and how to prevent headlice. The children were amazed to see the germs on the hand using a UV light.

W/B 27th January 2014

This week in Year 1 we have doing many different activities to join in with National Story Telling week. First of all Year 1 were so excited on Tuesday morning when all of Year 6 came into class. The Year 6 children wanted to write a story for each child based on what characters, setting, and genre of story they like to read. Year 1 had fantastic imaginations and ideas and certainly gave the Year 6’s a challenge to write a variety of stories from adventure to comedy stories, with some very vivid characters. The Year 6’s worked hard all week and came back into class to read their stories to their year 1 buddy on Thursday.  The stories were fantastic and the children loved hearing their ideas and what their characters did in the story!!!  The Year 6’s will be giving the children a copy of the stories next week for Year 1 to take home. Well done Year 6 and thank you for coming to visit Year 1!!!  This gave us a great opportunity in Year 1 to learn about how the Year 6’s wrote the stories by discussing that all stories have a beginning, middle and end and what needed to be in each part.

On Wednesday night it was lovely to see how many children came back for the Bedtime Stories event. The children first went into the hall to listen to a story read by Mrs Threlkeld and then came back to class to hear more stories while we all sat in a circle around lanterns on cushions and blankets  and enjoyed hot chocolate and biscuits!!!

The children are trying so hard with their reading challenge, to read as many books as they can in a month! The children are collecting lots of stamps in their reading passports! Well done to Georgia for coming in  nearly every day this week having read a new book at home and making me a book review to tell me all about it!!! This months challenge ends tomorrow so the children with the most stamps in their reading passport will get a certificate and a prize. February’s challenge will start from Monday.

Remember you can get a stamp in your reading passport if

  • You read your school book 3 times in a week and you have the signatures in your reading records
  • You bring a book in from home and can tell me what it was about.
  • You read your school library book  and tell me what it is about or what you found out if it was a non-fiction book and then swap it for the next week.

In Maths this week we have been learning about subtracting a 1 digit number from a two digit number. The children had great fun creating their own subtraction board games and dice games to create subtraction problems. The children even completed the challenge I set them on Thursday to solve subtraction word problems using the knowledge they had been learning in the week!! Well done Year 1 you have worked very hard.

In the afternoons we have been having lots of fun celebrating the Chinese New Year and continuing our Fighting Fit topic by learning about healthy eating. On Tuesday the children learnt about the Chinese Zodiac and the Year of the Horse by making crafts such as Chinese dragons and horse puppets.  Thank  you Grace for bringing in your Chinese dresses to show the class!

In topic we have been learning all about the different food groups and what makes a balanced diet. On Thursday we were all little chefs and started to learn about how to follow instructions by making healthy fruit kebabs and designing our own fruit smoothies! The children loved this activity, first making them and then of course their favourite bit, dipping them in yogurt and eating them!!! Thank you Daniel for bringing in the life size 3d body picture. When we opened it up the children all went “WOW” and loved looking at the muscles, bones and veins in our bodies!!

Hope you have a great weekend everyone. I hope the weather isn’t going to be as bad as it sounds. See you Monday

Year 1 team.

W/B 20th January 2014

This week the children have been learning all about healthy eating, the importance of a balanced diet and the different food groups. In art the children created a balanced meal by cutting out food shapes from coloured paper to represent each of the food groups and stuck them to paper plates to create a balance meal. The children were also able to help me sort my weekly food shop into the different food groups to make sure that I was having a balanced diet. During snack time the children commented on milk and fruit they were having and how important is it they have it everyday.

This week in Literacy were have started to learn about Traditional Tales. The story we focused on this week was 'The Three Little Pigs'. The children acted out the story using masks and puppets, focusing on expression in their voices and the correct order of the story. Well done to all groups it is hard to follow a play script and perform in front of the class! Later in the week the children retold the story of the Three Little Pigs using time connectives and created wanted posters to help find the big bad wolf which including a character description and thinking of some fantastic rewards. Keep an eye out for our new display outside the classroom.

In numeracy the children have been learning about adding two numbers together using objects and numberlines. Earlier in the week we had a pirate themed lesson and helped the pirate to count how many jewels and coins he had in his treasure chest. The children also played addition games and helped each other to solve word problems. It was lovely to see the children using the classroom environment and displays to solve the problems independently and helping each other when they were stuck.

Next week is National Storytelling Week, therefore the homework this week involves reading the traditional tale (in their homework book) with your child and discussing the story to find out what happens in the beginning, middle and end.

Reminders:

RM Maths Club is on Monday at 8:30am. Well done to all the children who have been attending the last few weeks. I have seen your passports with your scores and you are getting better every week!!!!

To link in with National Storytelling week on Wednesday 29th January children are invited to come back to school at 6pm-7pm for the ‘Bed Time Story Experience’. Children should come to school dressed in their pyjamas and bring a cuddly toy. They will listen to a number of stories and have a lovely hot chocolate.

Starting next week all the children will be involved in a reading challenge until April. Each child has a reading passport in school. The children will get stamps in their passports if they show they have been doing any kind of reading. The children can get stamps for the challenge by:

  • showing they have read their school book at least three times a week in their reading record books which are sent home.
  • they change their library book every Friday and can tell me what they book was about from the previous week.
  • they bring in any additional books they have read at home and can tell me what it is about or an interesting fact if it is a non-fiction book. The children will bring any books home the same day.

Can you please make sure your child has a spare pair of underwear left in their book bag or PE bag, just in case of any accidents.

Have a great weekend everyone! See you on Monday

Year 1 team.

W/B 13th January 2014

This week I am so proud of the children for how hard they have worked and the quality of the work that they have produced. It is lovely to see how much the children are improving in their writing. This week we have been little poets and created our own sense poem about sounds we hear in school and when we're in bed at night. The children wrote fabulous poems with rhyming words, punctuation and adjectives!! Our new topic "Fighting Fit" linked in with our writing and involved having an exploring afternoon using our different senses. The activities included a blindfold taste testing challenge, a smelling challenge, a feel box challenge and a sound quiz! The children came up with fantastic adjectives when only using one sense at a time.

In numeracy this week the children have been learning to write numbers in both words and figures and finding 1/10 more or less than a given number. It was a great opportunity for the children to use the sounds they have been learning in phonics to help spell the words. In PE this week we watched a variety clips from the London Olympics, in particular the gymnastics. The children loved watching the clips and discussing the routines and shapes they made with their bodies. We then went into the hall and learnt about different balances and ways to travel across the floor just like the gymnasts in the clips.

This week we had to say goodbye to Tom (the school sports specialist) who left Grange Valley today to go on his travels around the world. The children have certainly enjoyed his lessons and he has  helped to create great enthusiasm in the children for sports and games. From all in Year 1 we hope you have a great time Tom and can't wait to see the pictures with our school bear on your travels.

Reminders: RM Math's club for Year 1 is on Monday at 8:30am (All children are welcome to just turn up on the morning)

Can you please make sure you write in your child's reading record book each night when you read with them. Thank you.

Hope you all have a great weekend

W/B 06th January 2014

Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had a fantastic break and a great New Year!! In year 1 we have got straight back into our learning. In maths we have been looking at doubling numbers to 10 and some children were even doubling two digit numbers beyond 20! We have also been looking at counting in 2's. We learnt a song about Noah's ark and the animals to help count forwards and backwards in 2's. In literacy we started looking at poetry and how we can use our senses to help include interesting adjectives in our writing.  The children wrote some of their own poems about different smells that remind them of certain people or places. As you can imagine there was some funny responses particulary about me!!!!!! Our new topic this term is fighting fit and the children have started to look at our skeletons and bones. They made joined skeletons and labelled the different parts ready for a new classroom display!

Reminder: Year 1 RM Maths club is on 8:30 Monday morning for anyone wanting to come.

Please can you make sure you child has their PE kit in next week.

If your child has got a place on the multi skills club starting Tuesday they will have been given a letter to take home tonight to confirm.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and see you next week.

W/B 9th December 2013

What a fantastic week!!!!!!! It has been extremely busy and I think we are all ready for a relaxing weekend. We started off the week going to the Theatre Royal to watch the pantomime “Peter Pan’. The children had a fantastic time and joined in with the booing at grumpy Capitan Hook and the singing of the songs! Here are some of the comments from the children.

This is awesome Miss Jones!’

“I think it must be magic, how are they flying on the stage?”

“Can we come again next week maybe another story will be on?”

After visiting the theatre we got some inspiration to become little actors ourselves as we have performed our Christmas Nativity four times to the rest of the school, parents and grandparents. I am so proud of all the children, they have worked very hard to learn all the dances, songs and lines.  I think I can say we must have the best dancing animals, shepherds and angels in St Helens, not forgetting the kings, Innkeeper and Mary and Joseph!  It is very difficult to stand up in front of a large group of people but you were all amazing!!!!!

Later in the week we watched a lovely Christmas puppet show with the whole school and back in class we completed lots of Christmas themed activities from matching crackers to make number bonds, looking at Christmas present wrapped up to decide their 3d shape, writting letters to Santa and invitations for our class party, all this around making calendars for 2014.

Finally to finish off this fantastic week we had our class Christmas party with a very special visitor……….. I wonder who it was? The children were extremely excited and I am sure they will sleep well tonight.

Have a great weekend everyone and see you all next week!

Year 1 team.

W/B 2nd December 2013

Christmas is definitely here and in Year 1 we have had a lovely week starting to celebrate. We began the week off with the Christmas Tree lighting followed by the Christmas Fair. It was lovely to how many people came to watch the children singing Christmas carols and to see the children's delight when a special surprise visitor arrived. This year’s Christmas Fair was very successful so thank you to everyone who came and helped!

In literacy we have been reading the fabulous story ‘The Gruffalo’ and focused on writing character descriptions with lots of adjectives and writing a book review. In numeracy we have been learning about the days of the week and the seasons of the year. The children learnt a song to the Adam’s family tune to help remind them of the order.

Through out the week the children have all took turns to decorate the classroom and the two class Christmas trees. The children have also been playing Santa and his little helpers in our Santa’s workshop. In the workshop they have been learning about 3d shapes by looking at the shapes of different presents and labeling them.

 W/B 25th November 2013.

Is it really the last week in November??????

That can only mean one thing in Year 1………..let the count down to Christmas begin!!!!

First of all can I say a massive thank-you to all the children that have brought in items for the Christmas Fayre and spare Christmas decorations for school. Another thank you to all the children that have brought in their extra clothing needed for the Christmas Nativity.  The children will be doing dress rehearsals all next week so can you please make sure your child has what they need. This can be found on the letter that was sent home with your child’s part in the play.

In Literacy this week the children have been writing their own repeating stories.  They have been trying very hard to include the joined up letters we have been learning in their writing. The children have had a number of sessions this week on their target spellings and they have done very well. Please keep learning how to read and spell the words in the front of your reading record books.  These will be updated very soon and new spellings put in your books.  In numeracy the children have been learning to measure using non-standard units such as hands and cubes. The children have been measuring their height and lengths of classroom objects. They also had a class challenge to get into height order within a set amount of time, comparing who was taller or smaller.

We have been continuing to practice the Christmas Nativity this week and the children are doing very well. A letter was sent home on Wednesday about the times of the shows. Also this week, Year 1 got to work with Year 2 on an art project. The children had to create their own versions of famous artwork by  artist Jean Miro. The Year 2 children helped the Year 1’s to think of designs taking inspiration from the artists work and together they made their own versions using a variety of different medias.

Reminder: Don’t forgot the Grange Valley Christmas Tree Lighting on Monday 2nd December at 2pm then to be followed by the Christmas Fayre at 3:30pm.  As the children will be outside for some time to sing our carols and watch the lighting of the tree, can you please make sure they all come in suitable clothing. (Hats, scarfs, gloves etc) Thank you.

Have a great weekend everyone. My weekend is certainly planned as it is tradition in my house to have the Christmas tree up by the December 1st!!

See you Monday!

Year 1 Team

W/B 18th November 2013.

What a busy but fun week it has been in Year 1. In literacy we have been looking at repeating stories. We read some lovely stories called 'Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do You See?', 'Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?' and 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.' The children then wrote their own versions of some of the stories, concentrating on the punctuation we needed to put in. In numeracy we have been looking at recognising coins and making totals using different coin amounts. The children did find this tricky so we will be looking at it again next week. The homework this weekend should help to reinforce what we have been learning.

Also this week we have started to practice our Christmas Nativity and the children are doing fantastic in rehearsals. All children should keep practising the songs at home and those children that have lines need to keep saying them loud and clear.

To continue our topic 'Toys' the children have been looking at old and new teddy bears and how they are made. The children got the chance to make two new teddy bears for our class and all had a go at stuffing the bears and thinking of ideas for names. They decided they should be called Rosie and Rainbow Bear. Rainbow bear is now going to be going with Year 1 everywhere!!!!! One child each week will be chosen to take Rainbow Bear home for the weekend and join in any activities you will be doing as a family. The children can then be as creative as they like and make a page in his adventure book  about what he has been up to! It is a fantastic way to get the children to enjoy writing.

We finished off the week with a trip to the Museum of Liverpool with Rainbow Bear. The children had a fantastic day and even enjoyed the drive to the museum. The children were asking questions about what the wind turbines were that they saw at the docks, the different ships in the docks and we even got to see Goodison Park!!! At the museum the children got to explore Little Liverpool an interactive museum for children, they also went on a toys of the past hunt around the museum and were given a guided session from museum staff about materials that old and new toys are made from and then got a chance to play with a variety of old toys. The day was finished off with the children starting a sing song on the way home with Yellow Submarine and Ferry across the Mersey which they had heard through out the day!!!! It was a fantastic day and below are some of the pictures.

Reminder: On Monday it is non uniform day for just Year 1 children as they missed out on Friday. In exchange can you please bring in items for the Christmas Fair. Thank you!

Have a great week everyone

 W/B 11th November 2013

It has been a lovely week in Year 1! At the beginning of the week we had a Remembrance Day assembly with the whole school and the children were explaining to me what the day was all about when we got back to class. In Literacy we have been looking at a lovely story called 'The Midnight Man.' The children have wrote some lovely pieces of writing to describe the main character. Well done Year 1 very proud of you all! Linked into the story we have also been making our own dream catchers to go outside the classroom. In numeracy we have been continuing to look at 2d and 3d shapes and went on a hunt to find them in the school. In our topic we hot seated Mrs Gribbon about the toys she had when she was a little girl. The children were very surprise that at Christmas she got only one special present and there were no computerised games. We finished the week off with a fun filled Children in Need day! You all looked great in your own hero costumes.

Happy Birthday to Josh this week. Have a great weekend.

Year 1 team.

W/B 04th November 2013

Wow it has been a busy week in Year 1! In numeracy we have been looking at repeating patterns and 2d/3d shapes. The children created their own necklaces with a pattern and made shape pictures and 3d models. We also learnt a very catchy song called Farmer Pete to help us with our number bonds to 10! The children loved it and seem to be picking up the concept much quicker… keep practising.

In literacy we have been learning to write poems. This week we wrote about fireworks and bonfires. I can’t believe some of the writing the children produced, make sure you come and have a look at our display outside Year 1. We linked this in with ICT and created our own firework pictures using different tools on a painting package. We have also made own our rockets in our art lessons.

The children have also been helping out to build a learning tree in the entrance area of school. They had great fun getting messy with the paper mache. Hopefully soon it will be covered with all our achievements in school. Keep watching it grow!!!!!

And finally….

Happy Birthday to Kian who celebrates his 6th birthday tomorrow!!!

I look forward to seeing you all at parents evening next week. The children all came home with appointment times in the book bags today. I have tried to accommodate your requests as much as possible.

There are still some children who haven’t returned their trip reply slip as to whether you would like them to come on the trip. Can you please make sure this comes in next week. I can give you a new letter if you need one. Thank you

Have a great weekend

WB 28th October 2013

What a fun first week back it has been in Year 1! We started off the week in literacy looking at counting poems.  The children thought about all the different things that reminded them about Halloween and used adjectives to describe them. Later in the week we used these to write our own Halloween counting poems.  We also read the story Room on the Broom and wrote our own versions of the story. We continued the Halloween theme in our numeracy lessons looking at doubling pumpkins and witches to 10 and addition facts to 10. In PE we created a short Ghostbusters dance thinking about different ways to move and changing the speed and height of our movements.

We can’t forget the KS1 Ugly Bug Disco! It was lovely to see how excited the children were. We have some brilliant dancers! There was even a guest appearance from a well know pop group!

Later in the week the children continued to investigate materials in science and made clay pumpkins and decorated them ready for our new display.

Well done Year 1 you have worked very hard this week all your teachers are proud of you!!

Reminder: Year 1 can come into school at 8:30 on Monday mornings and use the ICT suite to go to RM Math’s Club. If the children come to the club they will get a certificate at the end of the term.  It is a great way to get the children to use their math’s knowledge and apply it to solve problems.

Have a great weekend

WB 28th October 2013

Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had a fabulous holiday and ready to start this exciting term! It certainly will be a busy term but there are lots of lovely things being planned for the school and Year 1.

Just a few quick reminders

and

On Friday there is an opportunity for parents of the Year 1 children to come into school and go into the schools ICT suite. It is a chance for you to sit with your child and allow them to show you the different computer programmes and websites they have access to at home. Year 1's meeting is on Friday 1st November at 2:45. Hope to see you then.

I will update you later in the week about all the activitites we have been doing in class.

Miss Jones

WB 14th October 2013

Year 1 has had a fantastic last week in school before the half term holiday. We started at the beginning of the week going for an autumn walk in our beautiful school grounds and woods. The children loved looking for conkers and collecting things to take back to class to put in the class discover tray. The walk was all about the children coming up with adjectives (this is our new word we have learnt this week) to describe the woods. It was to help us when we went back to class to write about a setting. The children wrote superb descriptions using all the items and adjectives we had discussed. I was so impressed with the children's work we decided to make a new display in the corridor outside our class. In the afternoon the children used to discovery tray with all the items to create some fantastic pastels pictures. We have some great little artists in the class.

The children worked extremely hard as the week when on we look at writing other setting descriptions for me to see just how well the children have developed since they started in September. We also completed lots of practical fun math's activities; I can already see some very hard little workers.

The children all have target cards  while they work at tables ask your child what their next targets are so you can help them to develop at home. I will send out a letter soon for your child's next steps towards reaching their next level.

To finish off the week we got to go on a trip to the church and watched the Year 3 and Year 4 harvest assembly. In school the children have been learning all about baptism and churches. At the church the children got to role play a baptism and see the font, christening gowns and talk about the religious symbols. When the children returned to school they were talking about their exciting trip and have asked to go back at Christmas. The harvest assembly was fantastic, well done to Year 3 and 4. The children really enjoyed it and came back into class singing the songs and asking more questions about harvest.

Have a well deserved break everyone and see you in a weeks time. Ready for my favourite but very busy term and of course the run up to Christmas.

Year 1 team.

WB: 7th October 2013

What an exciting day it has been in Year 1! We've had a very special visitor!!

Knock, Knock! Who could it be? ...

It was Leo the Lion who popped into our class to play with us. He was a very hungry and cheeky lion, he came just at the right time when the children were about to have their snack. The hungry lion ate all the children's fruit and drank all their milk, he even drank Mrs White's coffee!!!! The children had to go and tell Mrs Gribben that the naughty lion had eaten all their snack and could they please have more.

Doesn't it sound like a book we have recently read in school .... The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Only this could be 'The Lion Who Came to Snack!' Maybe we could write our own stories.

The children absolutely loved this morning, their faces lit up as the lion knocked on the door. They couldn't wait to tell other people who had been into class. Here are some of the comments.

"He is a very cheeky lion Miss Jones, maybe we should hide your sweetie jar!" Alexia

"This is just like the story the Tiger Who Came to Tea. The characters in that story were Sophie, Daddy and Mummy and the Lion and year 1 could be the characters in our story!!" Georgia

" Is Leo the Lion coming back in again!! James

In literacy we will be writing some captions for some of the pictures we took from the day and we will be writing our own version of the Tiger Who Came to Tea story by Judith Kerr.

In topic we have been learning all about houses and the children have designed their own dream home and labelled them with key vocabulary (terraced, semi-detached, detached). Mrs Holcroft will be picking the best designs on Friday, the best will win team points for their team.

Well done Year 1 for working so hard this week!

Year 1 team

WB: 30th September 2013

First of all well done to Elicia for winning the gold medal in ice skating!!! We are all proud of you for trying so hard in the competition.

Well done to all the stars of the days and the merit award winners!

This week in Year 1 we have been learning about labels, list and captions in our Literacy lessons. We started off the week drawing pictures of monsters and labelled them using adjectives to really describe what the monsters features were like. The children were fantastic at sounding out unfamiliar words. Keep up it Year 1! We then went on in small groups drawing around each other on large pieces of paper and labelling our bodies. In the home role play area the children used post it notes to label the drawers and cupboards of the kitchen. We then created shopping lists for a tea party which linked in with the story “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” last week. On Friday we will start caption writing and go around school taking pictures to create a school guided book with captions to go under the pictures.

In Numeracy the children have been working very hard to find 1 more and 1 less than a given number and then using it and applying it to answer simple word problems and write number sentences . I was so impressed to see the children turning over their number squares and trying to solve it themselves before they used the support of the maths equipment.

In science we have continued to be looking at materials. This week the children were given a collection of fabrics. They had to use some of their senses to describe the different types. They came up with some super describing words. The children then loved getting the magnifying glasses out and seeing more closely how some of them looked and could tell how they were made.

This week I have put in the children’s homework books, usernames and passwords for the new maths activity resource “The Zone”. The children can log on at home and play the maths games, which I have set for them. The children will collect rewards, the more times they play the games, and I get to see how the children are doing when I log on. Lets get playing!!! Keep using the education city for literacy and phonics. The Zone Website

Reminder: There was a good turn out for Zumba this week, It is certianly a fun way to get fit. Hope to see you there next week.

Keep reading and practising the spellings in the front of the children’s reading books.

It is lovely to see the children bring in their extra homework and spelling practise from home this week! Any children who bring in their spelling practice homework can have extra team points for their team!!!

Have a great weekend!

Year 1 team.

WB: 23rd September

Happy Birthday to Grace and Daniel who celebrated their 6th birthday this week!

Congratulations to all the stars of the days this week and the gold, silver and bronze award winners for "listening to others."

It has been a busy week in Year 1. We started the week in Literacy reading the story 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. The children created their own titles for a similar story by using the initial sounds in words. The ideas were brilliant, here are some:

The Cat Who Came to Cuddle

The Rabbit Who Came to Rock

The Snake Who Came to Snacktime.

In our new classroom home area the children had great fun retelling the story through role play and we created invitations to invite other animals to our own class tea party.

In Science we made collages using different materials. The children came up with great describing words for all the different types and we created a new display for the classroom.

We have continued our topic homes and houses. Some children modelled the difference between semi-detached, detached and terrace houses at the front of the class to help with our understanding of the types of homes. We also loved looking at different styles of homes around the world.

Reminder: A Zumba class is being held at the school on Tuesday evenings at 5pm. It was great fun this week! I hope to see you all there next week!

Can you please make sure all the children's clothes have their names in so that theycan be easily returned if found in school.

WB: Monday 16th September

Congratulations to all the stars of the days this week and the gold, silver and bronze award winners for "keeping on going even when it's hard"

Congratulations to Lloyd for getting his rugby medal! Well done, keep it up!!!

First of all I want to say a huge welcome to our new member of the class, Charlie! I am so proud of the children for making him feel so welcome, they have loved meeting him and having a new friend.

This week we got to read one of my favourite books 'Dogger' and now it seems that all the children agree with me. The children really enjoyed listening to the story of the little brown teddy who gets lost at the school summer fair. In our writing we wrote about a time when we have lost a toy and how we felt at the time. The children's writing was fantastic!!!! As we have started to learn how to write in cursive the children are trying hard to show it in their writing.

We started our phonics sessions this week recapping all the sounds we learnt last year and then introducing some new ones. We have painted pictures of different aliens and given them names. These will help to decide if a word is an alien word or real word!! Keep practising the key words at home. If the children bring in their spelling practise from home they will get a special sticker from me!!!

On Thursday for our Science topic 'Materials' we went on a hunt around the school looking for objects made from different materials. The children had great fun deciding what the objects were made from, some cause quite a discussion! (Paper!)

Thank you to all the parents to attended the welcome meeting on Monday! It was lovely to meet you all.

Reminder: It is photographs tomorrow in school!

Enjoy the weekend.

Congratulations to all the star of the days this week and the gold, silver and bronze award winners for the merit of "following the rules."

Well done everyone! The first week of the school year has come to an end and what a busy week it has been. At the beginning of the week the class listened to the story "This is the Bear." They loved this story about a little boy who lost his special bear. The children created lost posters to help find the bear, coming up with some fantastic describing words. Later in the week all the children brought in their own special bears to describe and write about. We also started to learn a new way to write our letters, ready for when we do joined up writing in Year 2. I can't believe how fantastic the children's handwriting was. The new letters we have learnt this week are c, a, o, d with a lead in (a woosh) and a lead out (a kick). Keep practising!!!

The children also got to attend their very first hymn practice with the whole school. We have some beautiful singers in Year 1 and the children loved learning the new songs.

We have also started our new topic "Houses and Homes" and as a class we decided what we would like to learn about the different buildings. The children now have a construction area and home corner area in class to help with the learning of a variety of buildings, the purposes and what they are made from.

Later in the week we will be celebrating Roald Dahl day 2013 with lots of different activities in class and looking at some of the fabulous books he wrote.

Here are some pictures from the week.

WB: Monday 2nd September

Welcome back!!!! I hope you all had a lovely summer holiday. It has been lovely to meet my new class and see them enjoying their new classroom. We have had a good few days getting to know each other and doing lots of creative activities. Here are a few pictures of what we have been up to.

We had a chance to discuss what makes a happy classroom and the children came up with a great set of classroom rules with rewards and consequences. Here are some of the rules the children gave

Owen said "make people smile by being kind"

Charlie said "sit nicely on the carpet"

Daniel said " always try at my work, even if it is hard"

Here are some pictures of what else we have been getting up to.

Reminder: Reading books will be sent home from next week. Please make sure the children bring them in everyday in their book bag. Water bottles will also be sent home every night. Can you please wash and refill them and bring them in the next day.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Can all children have their PE kits in from home next week.

Keep checking the blog every week to see what we have been up to in Year 1!
