Welcome to Mrs Dolman's Year 1 Blog

Week beginning 17th July 2017

Well done to all of Year 1 who have worked extremely hard this year!!!!

However a special congratulations goes to two little girls who have been noticed for particularly achievements whilst in Year 1.

Olivia -Mae for achieving the outstanding progress award.

Hollie for achieving the merit award.

Congratulations to both girls!

Where has this year gone!!

Just a quick note to say I have absolutely loved teaching this class. The children are all fantastic friends, who look after each other and have made me smile everyday. They have worked extremely hard and I couldn't have asked for anymore from them. Hopefully you can now see all their wonderful work in their books. I am really going to miss them but I will love watching them grow as they move through the years! Thank you to all parents and grandparents for your support this year!

Finally thank you so much for the kind words, beautiful flowers, thoughtful gifts and adorable baby gifts!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer break and hopefully I'll see you and the children around school for a couple of weeks in September before I start my maternity leave.

Mrs Mavers has asked that if over the summer it is possible for the children to collect buttons for a project in the autumn term. Can we please also ensure the children have official book bags and not their own bags in school.

Take care
Mrs Dolman

French Assembly

The children have been learning French for the last 5 weeks with Mrs Folwer. To show off all their new knowledge the children told the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in French to the whole school and parents. They have also learnt a days of the week song and head, shoulders, knees and toes in French. Well done Year 1 for working so hard.

French Day

In the morning the children researched all about France and found out about the flag, where it is in the world, famous landmarks and about food and drink. They then created a fact file to use in a tourist office trying to encourage people to go on holiday to France and what they would see. I set the children a challenge to recreate the Eiffel Tower using straws. They really thought about the detail in the structure and included as many elements as they could in their design. For our snack we also tasted pain au chocolat  and croissants.

In Maths we have been learning about positional language to describe objects and have discuss whole, half and three quarter turns. In English we have been trying to improve our vocabulary in our writing. The children have been concentrating on improving a basic adjective and adding adverbs to our writing.

Sadly next week is the last week of the school year! If you children still hasn't brought in a strong carrier bag please can they make sure they do next week as the children will be bringing home their work.

This week the children listened to the story The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch after learning about lighthouses and the seaside in our Geography lessons. The children wrote speech bubbles for the characters at different parts of the story and wrote a letter to Mr Grinling in response to receiving a letter from him. The children have also wrote their second pen pal letters to their friends in Spain telling them all about our Spanish week last week.

In maths the children have been learning about mass and how to weigh and compare objects using non standard units. We have looked at how scales work and how we can compare the weights. This weeks homework is linked to this unit.

On Tuesday we visited Christ Church and listened to Jesus's miracle stories. The children made friendships band and puppets and had to give them away to their friends in class. The children really enjoy going to church and this was another lovely afternoon for them.

On Thursday the children had completed their art work for a whole school project which is to be presented at the town hall. We read the story The Rainbow Fish and learnt the motto from the story to always to kind, respectful and always share with others. We designed 4 pieces of class art work linked to the story. We used different art techniques to make the pictures including painting with flour, inking, tissue paper and using sand) The art will be sent to the town school for a whole school art exhibition.  Parents could view the art work on Thursday if they wished to.

The children learnt how to say numbers 1-5, 6 basic colours and hello and goodbye in Spanish as well as learning a Spanish song. The children picked it up extremely quick. In our Geography lesson we wrote travel guides about Spain including key facts like the capital city, football teams, weather, location and reason for it being a holiday destination.

On Monday the children were so excited to talk to their pen pals friends in Spain via Skype. The children asked them basic questions in Spanish and they asked us questions in English. The children sang songs to each other in the languages and shared their favourite story books. The children loved this activity.

In PE the children learnt how to do flamenco and salsa dancing, as well as the cha cha. It was brilliant to see the children counting the beats in 3 and showing the strong flamenco facial expressions.

In our English lessons the children wrote sets of instructions about how to make paella and potatas bravas using all the key features.

The children completed their 20 minutes fidget spinning sponsored event on Thursday. Please can any sponsor money be returned to school as soon as possible. Thank you for your support.

The last week of this half term has been fantastic!

We of course had sports day on Thursday, which was a great day. Thank you to everyone who came and supported the school. Well done to blue team for being the overall winners, although it was very close this year. It was lovely to see the children participating in all the sports and helping their friends along in other teams. I know the children enjoyed it but it looked like the mums and dads who took part in the races enjoyed it just as much!!!

On Friday to continue our topic work about plants, the children recreated their own versions  of Vincent Van Gogh's famous Sunflowers using paints, oil pastels, chalks and pencils.

Have a great week off everyone. Hopefully enjoying more sunshine!

See you all soon.

On Friday we received a letter back from Captain Hook who is still refusing to bring the class bear back and now has taken the gold coins the class made for him last week. The children wrote back to Captain Hook demonstrating all their learning of using prefixes, exclamation marks, question marks, capital letters for names, places and start of sentences to support their assessments and meeting their next steps.

In Maths this week we have been learning about time. So far we have looked at reading and drawing o'clock and half past times on an analogue clock. This is linked to the homework this week. Please make sure when the children are drawing the times they think about the size of the hands and where the hour hand would be when drawing half past times. Next week we will continue to look at time, discussing durations and time vocabulary.

In Science this week the children learnt about different types of trees, focusing on naming evergreen and deciduous trees. They went on a hunt in the grounds to spot the trees we have in our grounds and collected various leaves to compare back in class.

In Geography the children are nearly completing our topic 'What would travelling Ted like about our local area?' This week we discussed what features they like about our town, what they don't really like and what we could improve. The children came up with some fantastic ideas they like the variety of shops, good parks and activity centres available. They also thought really hard about ways we could improve the area such as reducing the speed limits so cars don't drive as fast (Michael), setting up a museum about the local history of the area (Skye) removing the graffiti that can be seen in parks and on buildings (Chloe) more dog waste bins (Lois) The children then wrote letters to the council about what they like and would like to see change.

The children are doing fantastic with improving their phonics knowledge, ready for the screening. Please keep continuing to support them at home.

It has been a very busy week in school this week with the Year 6 SAT's. The Year 1 children have been brilliant making sure they were being quiet around school and coping with the changes to the class timetable. Well done Year 1 for being so supportive and a huge congratulations to all the Year 6 children who have worked so hard all year and tried their best in the tests!!!

In English this week the children were very upset to find the class bear had gone missing with a letter from Captain Hook in its place. The children all week have been leaving traps on the field, writing letters to ask him questions about what he had done and  to bring it back. The children also made gold coins to leave out as an exchange. Hopefully on Monday we should hear back from him. The golden coins have been left out tonight!!!! On Friday the children wrote their own pirate stories about Captain Hook and his crew.

In Maths we have been learning about how numbers are made, by concentrating on tens and ones in a number. The children used this knowledge to order numbers to 100 based on how many 10's it had in it.  In Computing we have continued to develop our games by using more advanced algorithms to make the characters in the game move. The children were all set challenges to complete and improve their game.

Next week

We will be practising for sports day, going on a hunt around the school grounds, finding out if Captain Hook brings our bear back and learning about time.

Reminders

There are quite a few children coming to school with very large and ornate bows and bobbles in their hair. This is not appropriate for school uniform and we would appreciate children wearing more sedate accessories in school colours. Please save your larger, colourful items for the weekend. Thank you for your cooperation.

Fidget Spinners. We are happy for children to play with Fidget Spinners in school, but ONLY at break and lunch times while they are outdoors and at their own risk. We cannot be held responsible if any are lost or broken while on school premises. However, Mrs Holcroft will consider a ban if they become a problem in any way whatsoever. So please follow the rules.

It has been a short but busy week in Year 1. In English this week the children have been writing their own fantasy stories. After reading the story Aliens Love Underpants the children created their own characters about funny items that they might like. We wrote our stories using slow write. This is where the children are given a challenge to include in each sentence to help support the children in making more detailed sentences.

In Maths this week we have been learning about 1/2 and 1/4's. The children first had to 1/2 and 1/4 shapes and find out how many ways they could do it. We then concentrated on colouring in a 1/2 or 1/4 of a shape in a picture. At the end of the week we then started to look at splitting numbers. The homework this week is linked to this.

In Geography we have been looking at our photographs we took on our local walk to identify different types of homes. We discussed the types of homes the children live in and the children had to learn the important task of memorising their address.

In our computing lessons we have been using a programme called Scratch to help support the children in learning about programming and algorithms. The children had to create a background and characters for their game and then create a programme to make the characters move and complete a series of actions. The children have loved learning about this topic.

Just an update about our plants we are growing in class, they are growing amazing well. The children are continuing to care for them and observe the changes regularly.

The children held a debate about which was their favourite story and why. On Friday we watch clips of the film Monster Ink and the children focused on writing questions pretending they were the monsters and thought about questions they would ask when they met the children.

In Maths this week we have been learning about multiplication and division. The children were working out how to share a number between different amounts, also how to solve problems quickly involving counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Please keep practising counting in 5’s at home. Later in the week we started our new topic fractions. We have looked at how we half shapes. The homework set this week is based on this and then how to half numbers.

In Geography this week we went on our local walk. The children were given locations on a map and had to tell the teachers how to get there using a map and compass. Last week we had learnt about physical and human features so the children had to look out for as many of these as they could. See pictures above.

In Science we have continued to look after our plants. They are growing extremely fast. This week we looked at what is important to help plants grow. Next week we will be doing lots of artwork using plants.

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a lovely break.

We have read lots of stories this week. Our new topic this term is 'Fantasy Stories.' We have been learning about the fantasy world that Lucy in the Narnia story goes to. We have read descriptions about the magical forest that Alice in Wonderland had to travel through and read one of my favourite books The Sorcerers Apprentice. The children have wrote about magical objects in the stories and fantasy settings using adjectives and a variety of punctuation. The children's handwriting was fantastic and their phonics knowledge is certainly improving their spellings.

On Tuesday the children started our new Science topic 'What do plants need to survive?' The children explored different equipment we could use to plant our own beans and created an experiment. They planted their beans and will be looking after them through the summer, checking them every week to monitor their growth.

In Geography we have started our new topic ' What would Travelling Ted like about our town?' The children have been learning about what physical and human features we might find in our local area. Next week we will be going on our local walk to see if we can spot any of them.

In Maths this week we have been looking at multiplication and how to solve multiplication word problems. The children looked at how many groups and how many items were in each group to help to count quickly in 2s,5s, 10s or create an addition for any other numbers. This weeks homework is focusing on solving multiplication.

We have received a presentation from our link school in Spain. It shows the children pictures and explanations about what their school is like and what their school day looks like. This week we have started to create our own one. The children have been busy going around school and collecting photographs, as well as creating slide for the PowerPoint in our computing sessions. Keep check back and I will post the presentations for you all to have a look at.

Dates

Thursday 27th April - The children will be going on the local walk. Please make sure the children have a coat for this day.

Phonics screening is at the beginning of the next half term. Please keep practising the sounds and using the resource pack given at the phonics meeting to support your child.

In Year 1 we have certainly had a busy but fun week.

In Maths we had an Easter egg hunt but the children had to solve the additions and subtractions and the word problems in order to receive the prizes! See picture below.

On Thursday we visited the local church to learn about the Easter story. The children completed crafts, learnt about the story through the story telling activities, went on a Easter egg hunt and had a sing along with the new minister.

In Art we have been completing our Mondrian paintings. They look fantastic! Check out our new classroom display next time you pop in.

Of course it wouldn't be Easter week without some Easter crafts. The children have created spring daffodils, Easter baskets, and Easter cards. The children have been collecting mini chocolate eggs for good manners and good work all week ready to go in their Easter baskets.

On Friday the children had their final Easter challenge a spoon and Easter egg run.

Thank you to everyone who I saw on parents evening. It was lovely to chat about your child's progress as they are now 1/2 way through Y1.

This week in writing we have been learning to write funny poems. On Monday we used the suffix ed to write in the past tense about what our friends could do. E.g Jack jumped and joked. We then looked at expanding the phrases using 'and' to add more detail. On Friday we wrote our final drafts of the poem using the spellings we have been learning this week (the days of the week).

In Maths we have been learning about how to solve addition and subtraction word problems. The homework this week is linked to word problems.

It was an exciting week last week as the children in our twinning school in Spain received our pen pal letters. Below is a link of the children's letters and the school have sent over a video of them opening the letters. Over the next few terms it is going to be a lovely connection with this school swapping PowerPoint's, Skye calls and hopefully more letters.

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a lovely holiday. The children have settled back in straight away for a busy week.

Our text this week is the fantastic story The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore. The children were amazed to read the story using the APP which when used with the book makes the pages come to life and pop out of the screen. After reading the story we decided to make our own pop up book to write our own stories. First the children enjoyed the DT sessions to make the pop up books. First they had to take great care in folding, cutting and joining paper together to make the book and the pop up mechanism. Next we used our creative write sessions to write our own stories about the favourite books we loved to read and the different imaginary worlds we can be taken to when reading.

In Maths we have been learning how to measure length and height using non-standard and standard units. The children had to measure the lengths and height of objects and then compare them using key vocabulary (longer, shorter, tallest, shortest, longest) The homework this week is linked to this learning.

We also introduced the new history topic for the term 'Why was Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake brave?' Each week the children will be learning about different explorers from the past. This week we looked at a variety of people who are significant in history and what made them significant (Queen, David Beckham, Florence Nightingale, Nelson Mandela etc. Next week we will be learning about Neil Armstrong and his mission to the moon. Linking this into our Science lesson learning about the planets.

What’s coming up next week – World book dress up day. Art work by Jackson Pollock. Science – Naming planets and making rockets.

Reminders/ Dates:

  • World Book Day – 3rd March. Children to dress up as characters from stories.

In Math’s we continued to explore shapes. This week we looked at continuing patterns, the children had to decide whether the pattern was changing by colour, shape or both and then continue the pattern.

On Tuesday the children visited Christ Church to continue their learning about Baptism. The children listened to the story of Jesus getting Baptised and then learnt about the ceremony, some children acted out the ceremony to baptise baby Emily (the doll). They then of course enjoyed completing their crafts with a drink and biscuit, kindly organised for us by Sandra. In our English lessons we then learnt about recounts and retold the trip to the church, focusing on using first, then, next, after and finally to help order our writing.

On our Science lessons the church had to help Ted the Bear make a new umbrella, but after exploring materials in previous lessons they need to find out the best material to make the umbrella. The children had great fun testing the materials before finally testing it on Ted. To the children’s great amazement they picked the correct materials and Ted didn’t get wet!!!

This week in English we have been writing our own version of the story the three little pigs. The children plan their stories with the new characters and ending to the story. This week was assessment week so the children have been trying so hard to get their learning rockets as great as they can be.

In Math’s we have been exploring shapes. On Monday we looked at 2d shapes and the properties. We then compared these with 3d shapes. We went on a hunt around school to locate as many shapes as we could and sorted shapes into groups of different criteria (shape, colour, properities) This week I have uploaded shape games on primary active learning website for extra homework support.

We have continued our learning about the Queen and this week we looked at her coronation. We watched the  video of coronation and created our own flags and crowns to recreate the coronation ceremony which we will be recording this next week.

In Science the children created their own investigations to explore the properties of different materials. They tested if they were waterproof, absorbent, bendy, hard, transparent etc and decided what equipment they would need to test them.

On Friday we celebrate young carers day by dressing up as what we would like to be when we grow up. We had a fabulous mix of jobs including doctors, nurses, police, trampoline instructor, builders, waitress, footballers, pop stars, you tubers and lots of teachers which was very funny to watch the children acting out the lessons I had taught in the day and writing the class register in golden time with each other.

World book day is on 3rd March. The week leading up to this if any parents or carers would like to come in year 1 to read your favourite book to the whole class, please let me know and we can arrange a time.

Dates:

31st January – Class trip to Christ Church (afternoon only)

This week in English we have been learning about non-fiction texts. Linking in with our history topic about kings and queens, the children have wrote their own non-fiction books about Queen Elizabeth 11. We have looked at all the features of the texts including picture, labels, facts, contents page, blurb and front covers. We focused on capital letters for names of people, places and at the start of sentences in our writing.

In Math’s we have been exploring different ways to add and subtract numbers within 20. We have learnt to add and subtract by counting on and back from the largest number. The other way is to make 10 first and add on the rest. The final ways is to add the ones and then add the 10 back on.

Below is an example of the different ways to explore at home with your child.

On Wednesday Year 1 visited the local library to listen to traditional stories from around the world. They enjoyed a hunt around the library looking for certain books to solve a word problem.

Year 1 attendance this week – 98%. Year 1 won this week attendance. Well done Year 1!

Welcome back everyone! Hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

What a great way to start the New Year by receiving our OFSTED report. The report is now available on the website for anyone to read. The children’s behaviour and their work is always fantastic and I am so glad that OFSTED agree. On Friday we had our celebration assembly and each class was given an outstanding class Oscar. After the assembly each child was given a balloon. All the children had wrote a message on a label explaining why our school is outstanding, along with a QR code to the OFSTED report and the school email address so that if anyone found our balloons they could get in touch. One of Year 1 balloons has been found in Bolton. The gentleman has kindly send in a picture, which the children loved to see in class!!!! Thank you Dave for your email.

This week in English we have been learning about instructions. We have been playing games to learn how to listen and follow instructions. We then read and followed set of written instructions to make rainbow kebabs. They were really yummy! Next week we will be following instructions to make rice crispy cakes and writing our own instructions in creative write.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking at ordering numbers and understanding the meaning of the numbers between 10-20 (e.g 11 is made up of 1 lot of 10 and 1 one). Please keep learning at home how to write numbers to 20 in words.

At home continue to support your child with their maths.

  1. Use objects to support their understanding.
  2. Encourage the children to draw the problem. Using pictures or dots on paper. Writing the symbols they would need + - = etc (This could be handed in with their homework for me to have a look at their understanding of the task)
  3. Encourage the children to explain to you how they have solved the problem using key vocabulary (plus, add, take away, subtract, equals, more, fewer, more, less, bigger, smaller, greater, smaller, altogether etc)
  4. Use number lines or hundred squares.

It has been a very busy 4 day week but looking forward to next week.

What’s coming up next week – Queen portraits, Making rice krispies, PE gymnastics learning from the London Olympics.

Well done Year 1!

This week in English we have been looking at features of letter writing. On Monday we wrote our letters to Santa and posted them to the North Pole. I think Santa is going to be very busy getting ready for Year 1. The children have asked for our class role play area to be turned into Santa's workshop, so home next week they will be able to help the elves get ready for Christmas. The focus was to include question marks in their writing and ask Santa any questions.

The children have been practising so hard for the production next week. I think you are all going to enjoy seeing the play and how amazing the children are learning all the songs and dances.

Performances

Year 1 attendance this week – 98% . Well done Year 1!

This week in English we linked our writing into our topic toys. We listened to the story The Teddy Robber. It was about a giant who takes teddies because he has lost his own. As it is anti-bullying week we talked about whether it was ok to take others things and make them feel sad and upset. The next day in class the children found very large footprints everywhere and the class teddies had disappeared. The children decided they wanted to make a wanted poster so everyone could help find the teddies. We used the prefix un in our writing and included the fantastics.

On Wednesday in SEAL time we talked about getting on and falling out the children talked about times when they had fell out with their friends, the feelings they had and what they could have done to solve them. It was so lovely to witness the children discussing ways deal with situations that might arise on the playground.

In our RE lessons the children have started to learn about Christmas is celebrated. This week we looked at how Christians celebrate Christmas.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking at subtracting numbers. The children have been counting back from the group number.

At home continue to support your child with their maths.

  1. Use objects to support their understanding.

This week we in English we have read a spooky story everyday. On Monday we read Room on the Broom. The children listened to the story and retold it verbally in groups. In our creative write sessions the children retold the story using time adverbials. Others books we enjoyed this week were Funnybones and Winnie the Witch. On Wednesday we created our own counting poems with bonfire night as the theme. The children created their own word banks of describing words. They then used these to create a counting poem focusing on the lay out and adjectives.

On Wednesday we listened to a safety talk by the local fire brigade about how to stay safe on bonfire night. We enjoy you all enjoy the fun of the night but remember to stay safe!

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking at finding missing numbers in additions to 10. The children at first found this concept difficult but looked for clues to solve them. It is vital that the children understand the meaning of the = sign.

E.g 5+3 = ?       or         3 + ? = 8        or          ? + 5 = 8       or         8 = ?+3.

Some children looked at different ways to balance the equation.

E.g   5 + 1 = 3 + 3

At home continue to support your child with their maths.

  1. Use objects to support their understanding.
  2. Encourage the children to draw the problem. Using pictures or dots on paper. Writing the symbols they would need + - = etc (This could be handed in with their homework for me to have a look at their understanding of the task)

  4. Use number lines or hundred squares.

In History this week we started our new topic ‘Is the wii more fun than grandma’s toys?’ (Toys of the Past) This week we discussed the children’ s favourite toys and looked at what they are made of and how they work. We discovered that most toys had sound or lights. Next week we will look at older toys and compare the difference.

In Science this week we have started our new topic ‘ How many senses do we have?’ (Animals including humans) We looked at the different parts of our bodies and what we need these body parts for. The children identified which body part you needed for each sense.

We also had our Halloween disco on Wednesday. The children (little monsters) had great fun.

What’s coming up next week – Role play toy shop, designing a new toy, senses investigation, toy collages in art.

This week we in English we have started learning about poetry. We looked at different types of poems and the features. The children were given a selection of counting poems. In groups they had to put a performance together to recite the poem. We were looking at using our phonics knowledge to read the poems, recite the words, use clear voices when sharing with the class and listening to others to work together.

On Wednesday we watched the Year 4 assembly all about the harvest celebration. We learnt so much! Back in class we learnt some harvest songs and wrote all about what harvest means to Christians and what harvest is about. Well done to some children who got to show their fantastic work to Mrs Threlkeld. She was so impressed she sent it to Sandra at the church to have a look. Well done year 1!

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking at addition numbers to 10. We have discussed the different vocabulary we could use for addition and looked at the meaning of the equals sign and that sometime sums might start with the answer and additions can be reversed. E.g 5+3 = 8 or 3 + 5 = 8 or 8 = 5+3.

At home continue to support your child with their maths.

  1. Use objects to support their understanding.
  2. Encourage the children to draw the problem. Using pictures or dots on paper. Writing the symbols they would need + - = etc (This could be handed in with their homework for me to have a look at their understanding of the task)

In Geography and Science this week we looked animals that live in cold places around the world. We explored how different animals cope with the winter or cold environment. (Hibernation, adaptation and migration) We used non-fiction book, leaflets and the internet to research animals that live in the Arctic and created a fact sheet.

This week, we completed our RE topic on Diwali. The children have really enjoyed learning about the festival of light. We have listened to and re-told the story of Rama and Sita, we have made Diva lamps from clay and painted them and thought about why light is so important to the Hindu religion. The children told me at the end of our topic that 'light wins over darkness as well as good over evil'. Well done Year One.

This week we in English we went on a sense walk in the forest. The children use their senses to describe a walk in the woods. Back in class the children wrote a setting description using all the fantastic describing words. This formed part of the children’s writing assessments. It will also be linked to next weeks text ‘The Gruffalo’ The homework this week in concentrating on capital letters and full stops in writing. The children need to be able to identify when a new sentences starts in a short piece of narrative.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking at number bonds to 10. We have also completed our maths assessments. The children couldn’t have tried any harder. We certainly have fantastic mathematicians in the class.

At home continue to support your child with their maths.

  1. Use objects to support their understanding.
  2. Encourage the children to draw the problem. Using pictures or dots on paper. Writing the symbols they would need + - = etc (This could be handed in with their homework for me to have a look at their understanding of the task)

Thank you to everyone who returned the sponsor form for the NSPCC challenge. We raised £236.50

This week we continued to use the stories ‘Whatever Next’ as the basis for our writing. This week we introduced the children to the FANTASTIC’s and how we can use these prompts to create wow pieces of writing. We looked at retelling the story as a whole class and included as many of the FANTASTIC’s as we could for example feelings and action words and describing using our senses. We then planned our own versions of the story about where Baby Bear goes on his next adventure. The children slowed their writing down by concentrating on a couple of wow sentences they could use in their stories. On Friday the children then wrote their own stories using the detailed sentences learnt that week.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking a number bonds to 10 and how we can use them in problems. The children had to explore how many combinations of splitting a number into 2 they could find. This week’s homework is based on number bonds. The diagram on the sheet provided is what the children have been used in school to explain the number bond.

Here are some top tips to support your child at home with mathematics homework.

In Computing this week the children have been learning key skills we need to help when using the computers. We learnt the difference between logging off and shutting down and explored the buttons such as minimize, close and how to move and resize a window.

What’s coming up next week – Everton Coaches, Senses walk in the school ground and why animals hibernate, autumn picture finger printing.

Reminders/ Dates:

  • Children have access to water at all times during the day, even if you have paid for them to have milk every day.
  • Homework must be returned by Thursday. Mrs Dolman and Mrs Steele

Happy Birthday to Katie!!! We all hope you enjoyed your birthday.

This week we read one of my favourite stories ‘Whatever Next’. We have been learning about how to write lists, labels and captions. The children labelled pictures from the story, went on a label hunt around the classroom and wrote lists about what they would take to the moon if they were Baby Bear. Later in the week we created a visitor’s guide to Grange Valley. We took pictures around our school and wrote captions underneath in a visitor’s guide. We have been concentrating on capital letters at the beginning of sentences. Please keep encouraging this at home.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we have been looking a 1 more and 1 less of a number to 10 and comparing and ordering numbers 10 using key vocabulary. The children were given a problem about a lego tower competition, some towers had 1 more and 1 less, could they help me find out who won and how many lego pieces where in each tower. Thank you to everyone who could attend the meeting on Thursday. If you couldn’t attend, here are some top tips to support your child at home with mathematics homework.

In Geography and Science this week we looked at how we find out about the weather. The children watched weather forecasts and used maps to locate cities in the UK on their own blank maps. They worked with a partner to plan and deliver their own weather forecast to be filmed. The children were so confident in their delivery and helped each other.

The children have completed their spelling challenge this week for the NSPCC. All week we have been looking at writing numbers to 10 in words. This is something that can continue to be learnt at home.

What’s coming up next week –Story of Whatever Next, creating their own stories about what could happen next, making season wheels, multi skills and a number bond hunt.

Reminders/ Dates:

  • Sponsor forms to come back into school.

Have a great weekend!

This week in English the children have looked at the stories ‘Dogger’ and ‘This is the Bear.’ We have been looking at describing words and discussing how we can make sentences more interesting. On Thursday we had our Teddy Bear Day. We wrote all about our favourite bears and created missing posters to help find Dogger in the story. The children have been trying so hard with cursive writing this week. Please keep encouraging it at home, especially in homework.

The children loved having the teddy bears in class on Thursday. Below are some pictures. They wanted to show their bears everything in the classroom. They completed writing about them, read stories to them, showed them how we complete our maths challenges in the maths area and kept them close during our computing sessions.

In our Singapore Maths sessions this week we looked at numbers to 10 in words (reading and writing). This is something which can be practised at home too. We also focused on patterns that help us when we count forwards and backwards. We started to problem solve by finding the missing numbers in patterns. The homework this week is linked to this. Please encourage the children to work out if the numbers are getting smaller and bigger and then finding 1 more or 1 less than the number given. A reminder that all parents are welcome to the Singapore Introduction Meeting to gather an understanding of how Maths is taught in class on 29th September.

In Geography and Science this week we continued our new topic ‘Where do the leaves go in Winter?’ During a discussion before you started learning about the seasons, the children asked to go on an autumn walk, so this week we got the chance. The children used their observations to record on charts and make drawings of what they found in the environment linked to autumn.

The children had an assembly by the NSPCC. They have all received a sticker for attending the assembly. Next week we will be taking part in a sponsored spelling test to raise money.

What’s coming up next week – Being a weather forecaster, Whatever Next story, making our own rockets and multi skills.

Reminders/ Dates:

  • Thursday 29th September - Singapore Maths Meeting.
  • Any important letters or reply slips to be handed to Mrs Steele in the morning. Thank you. Mrs Dolman

This week we celebrated 100 years of Roald Dahl!

This week to celebrate Roald Dahl the children have looked at the stories ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘The Crocodile- Dirty Beasts.’ We have been looking at simple sentences this week and what makes a good sentence. Creating a sentence before we write, putting spaces between words and full stops at the end. We wrote a poem about what we could see in Willy Wonker’s chocolate factory and wrote about the crocodile using descriptive language.

This week we had the first of our Singapore Maths sessions. The children were fantastic at settling into the new routines of maths lessons. They were given a problem about how to find out the missing numbers to 10 and had to explore how to solve it. The children were introduced to journaling and began to explain how they solve the problem through drawings and number patterns. All parents are welcome to the Singapore Introduction Meeting to gather an understanding of how Maths is taught in class on 29th September.

In Geography and Science this week we began our new topic ‘Where do the leaves go in Winter?’ We have looked at the different seasons and how the weather can change across them. We have created a season tree display in class. The children have started to record the weather on a daily basis and made our own weather equipment to use outside. We discussed the weather in the UK and investigated how to make a cloud and tornado in a jar to explain how they are created.

What’s coming up next week - Autumn walk, weather experiments, teddy bear day, multi skills and the story of Dogger.

Reminders/ Dates:

  • Thursday 22nd September – Children to bring in a teddy bear.
  • Thursday 29th September - Singapore Maths Meeting. Mrs Dolman

Happy Birthday to Jack R, Freya and Lois who celebrated their birthdays this week!

Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had an amazing break. It was so lovely to see all the children on Monday and hearing about their holidays. They seem to have grown up over the summer! All the children are settled into Year 1 extremely well and are getting used to their new classroom and routines.  In Year 1 we encourage the children to be very independent from looking after their own things to their own learning. There will be a welcome meet next week to discuss what to expect in Year 1. Reading books are beginning to be sent home this week, can you please ensure your child has their reading book in everyday.

Reminders:

  • Please can you ensure your child has their PE kits in school as soon as possible with their team colour plain t-shirt.
  • Earrings are not allowed in school and must be taken out for health and safety. If your child has had them pierced over the holidays and they need a couple more weeks to heal, they must wear plasters over the earrings until they are able to be taken out.
  • Your child's name should be on all their uniform, particularly the jumpers and cardigans so they are misplaced.

Dates:

  • Tuesday 13th September  - Roald Dahl dress up day.
  • Tuesday 13th September - Roald Dahl story time  (3pm to 3:30)
  • Thursday 15th September - Year 1 welcome meeting.
