Welcome to Miss Daniels Reception Blog

W/B 1.7.2017

As I write our final blog post of this academic year, I cannot believe how the time has flown by. It only seems like yesterday when the children were coming in eager to start their first year of school. It has been an incredible year thanks to the wonderful children that we have had the pleasure to teach. We are so proud of the progress the children have made this year both academically and personally.

We would like to award our Star of the Year to Kacey! Kacey is a perfect member of the class who always tries her best, is a brilliant friend to everyone and we are proud of how much she has achieved this year. Well done Kacey!

This week we have looked through the children's Learning Journeys, Wonderful Writing and Magic Maths books. The children loved being able to see how much they have progressed since the start of the year. We were all reminded of the great fun and experiences we have had in Reception.

On our final day of term we enjoyed a final celebration assembly, were we said goodbye to our Year 6 children as they get ready to start their journey in high school. We also celebrated to special achievements for Reception as Pearl was awarded the Merit Award for the school year and Tayo received an award for Outstanding progress across the year.

We enjoyed some yummy treats and made our own candy floss in the afternoon as we spoke about our favourite times in Reception.

We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our heart for your kind gifts and messages in cards. We will miss all the children so much and we wish them all the luck in the world for their future in Year 1.

Have a wonderful Summer break and stay safe.

Love Miss Daniels, Mrs Mather and Miss Boardman xx

This week Reception enjoyed watching the Year 6 performance of the Lion King. They already cannot wait to be in year 6 so they can perform in front of the whole school. We enjoyed singing along to the songs and having a little dance. Our favourite is 'Hakuna Matata' which means no worries, we have had this phrase as our class motto for the last couple of weeks.

Thursday was a whole school french day. The children enjoyed a session with Mrs Fowler learning how to speak French and we enjoyed delicious french treats for our snack such as; croissants, crepes, pain au chocolate and cinamon swirls. We also watched Year 1 children perform Goldilocks and the Three Bears in French which was fantastic!

Class Attendance this Week:

We have been celebrating different cultures from all around the world this week in school. Reception chose to learn all about the country of Kenya. We have learnt lots of information this week, about what fruits are grown in Kenya, what animals are from Kenya and how to speak African. Can you say hello in afrikaans? We began the week with a fantastic dance session with Emma, who shown us some traditional african dance moves and let us listen to some music. See the class dojo for a video of the children dancing.

On Tuesday, we made smoothies from the fruit that comes from Kenya. We looked at apples, pears, mango, watermelon, avacado, oranges, bananas and we also used strawberries as its our favourite fruit as a class. Each of the children chose a smoothie that they would like to make; the most popular was strawberry and watermelon. The children used their own knifes to cut the fruit, and each of them discussed how to stay safe when using sharp equipment. We placed the ice, fruit, yogurt and milk into the blender to mix it all up then enjoyed our ice cold smoothies on a very hot afternoon.

The children also decorated Kenyan flag and transformed our classroom into a Kenyan restaurant on Friday afternoon. The children had so much fun listening to African music and tasting lots of different fruits. We are glad to see that we have such a healthy class.

This week has been Arts Week across school. Each year group has created a piece of art work to fit in with the themes of respect, equality, trust, politeness, tolerance, listening and kindness. Reception decided to plant and make our own 'Friendship Flower.' The children painted their hands and mixed their colours together to show that we have made new friendships in Reception and that we are all part of one, big Reception family. The children really enjoyed making the large stem and leaves and planting it into a plant pot. Each classes art work is going to be displayed in the Town Hall for an exhibition; more information to follow.

We also enjoyed a fantastic trip out to Farmer Teds. The children were so well behaved, I am beyond proud of them all. We stroked guinea pigs and rabbits, looked at piglets, horses, llamas and reindeers. We groomed the ponies, played in the soft play area, and enjoyed a tractor ride all before our lunch. Then we had some free play on the outdoor play area, saw the reptiles and mini beasts, and watched the cow be milked. A very busy and fun day. Thank you to all of our parent helpers.

We started this term with our new theme 'Argh Pirates!' The children were eager to dress up with the role play outfits and act as pirates. We have learnt all about some famous pirates; Black Beard, William Kidd, Anne Bonney and Black Bart. All of the children have a keen interest in this topic, and I am excited to see how their learning develops. We have enjoyed looking at different treasure maps, reading clues, and making our own maps look old by soaking them with wet tea bags.

On Wednesday we continued with our Singapore Maths lessons to prepare the children for Year 1. The children love exploring their new maths problems and thinking of their own ideas for solving them. We work in partners to share our ideas, feed back to the rest of the class, and then document our learning in our Magic Maths books. We also had some visitors from another school come in to watch us, and they were amazed at how amazing our Reception children are, and the work that they are completing.

On Thursday we enjoyed taking part in the 'Born to Move' workshop. We learnt that we were born to move our bodies in lots of different ways, and that moving around and being active is what helps to keep us fit and healthy. The children had lots of fun and will be continuing with this for the next 5 weeks.

Reception have also been lucky enough to have a visit from some lovely owls this week. Our visitor told us all about the different owls, how some are nocturnal and what they like to eat. The children also had a stroke of one of the smaller owls if they wished to. We learnt that when we hear the sound 'twit twoo' we are actually hearing two owls, as one will say 'twit' and the other will reply 'twoo,' how interesting!

We started our week with a trip to Sankey Valley to go pond dipping with the park rangers. We are so proud of the children's behaviour and the park rangers commented on how engaged the children were with the activities. The children listened carefully to the instructions of how to use the nets, handle to pond creatures safely and make sure we were looking after the environment. It was such a brilliant morning, thank you to the Mums that came along to help.

The children also took part in their first Sports Day as a whole school. They were all so excited and had practiced hard for each of their races. They managed really well on such a hot afternoon. We enjoyed seeing some of our Reception parents taking part in the parents sprint and tug of war. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

This week we set our little frogs free in the pond at the back of our woodland area in school. The children have really enjoyed having the tadpoles in class and watching them as they transformed into froglets and then finally into frogs. Each day they have been eager to come into school to observe the changes happening in the tank. Reception have learnt all about the life cycle, and different habitats that they need to survive.

We have read the story Jack and the Beanstalk this week. The children are all confident in retelling the story in the correct order. We produced lovely writing, with some children retelling the entire story and writing up to six pages and some of us wrote about their favourite parts. The children enjoyed decorating their own beanstalks out of toilet roll tubes, they all look fantastic. We also enjoyed planting our own magic beans, but they don't need to go into the soil, they will grow with kitchen roll in a plastic cup! Hopefully we will have giant beanstalks soon.

This week, we have learnt about different animals and their habitats. We know that a habitat is an animals home and each animals lives in an environment that provides them with food and shelter. We enjoyed sorting activities and discussing which animals we would like to be and which habitat we would like to live in and why.

We went on a hunt around the woodland area to find different mini-beasts habitats. We looked under rocks, in the soil, inside logs and in the flowers and tree and we made a note of the creatures that we found. Have a look at the fun we had...

On Tuesday we developed our fine motor skills and practiced our sewing as we made our own frogs. The children had excellent concentration and patience as they threaded the wool around the frogs and placed the stuffing inside. We are very proud of how well the children did with this activity, I think we may have some future seamstress' and tailors in our midst.

Reception have been working with Mrs Fowler over the last few weeks to complete science experiments. Last week each of the children grew their own cress in cups of soil and then used them to make egg mayonaise and cress sandwiches. Each of the children peeled the boiled eggs and safely used the tools to cut and mash the eggs together. They used scissors to cut the cress and then mix all of the ingredients together. The children needed to work together and take turns to make their sandwiches. We are very proud of each of the children for trying the sandwiches, some of them found out they they really enjoyed egg mayo sandwiches.

We have also been practicing for Sports Day this week, the children are very excited to race with each other. Don't forget sports day is Thursday 25th May at 1:30pm.

This week, our learning has been based around plants and flowers. On Tuesday we went for a lovely walk around the school field to see how many different types of plants and flowers we could find. The children found lots of Daisies, Dandelions and Buttercups, we enjoyed holding the Buttercups under our chins to see if we all like butter! We gathered lots of them in and brought them into class to use in our Garden Centre role play.

We have also enjoyed looking at lots of different types of flowers. We now know what Tulips, Bluebells, Roses and Lillies look like. The children enjoyed passing them around the circle during carpet time and discussing how they smelt and looked. In our Literacy we have been learning the different parts of plants and flowers and how to label them. We have learnt which parts are the petals, stem, leaves and roots.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed planting some Marigolds in the tyres on our EYFS playground. The children got their hands dirty and enjoyed digging holes for the plants and making sure they were secure in the soil. As we planted the flowers, we discussed what plants need to help them grow. We have learnt that they needs, sun and water and special nutrients (which means food) from the soil. Hopefully the weather continues for you to do some gardening of your own this weekend.

On Friday, we enjoyed our PE session using the apparatus in the school hall. The children practiced their balancing as they moved along the benches, and the practiced their jumping skills from the tops of the apparatus. We spoke about how it is important to land properly when we jump to make sure we don't hurt ourselves. We jumped from some high points on the apparatus, and the children each encouraged each other to be brave. Fantastic team work Reception.

We began our week with a visit from Helen to complete a Dental Workshop. She told us all how to brush our teeth properly, each morning and each night for 2 minutes, to makes sure we have healthy teeth and gums. We completed lots of fun activities; we drew germs and dirt on pictures of teeth and then brushed them away with toothbrushes. We sorted foods into different categories, ones that are healthy for our teeth and ones that are unhealthy. We also used some real dental equipment to practice brushing the teeth on some teddies. The children had lots of fun, and got to try some delicious, fruity snacks of oranges, blueberries, cucumber and grapes.

This week we have began to complete Singapore Maths lessons. Singapore Maths is an approach to teaching maths that allows the children to think of their own methods and develops a deeper understanding of number. The children will take part in Singapore Maths when they are in Year 1 and progress through the rest of the school. The lessons allow the children to explore a problem together and think of their own solutions. We are amazed at how well they have done, and how their little minds have thought of mathematical methods independently. Well done Reception!

As we have been learning about min-beasts this week, we discovered that butterflies have symmetrical wings. In the creative area the children have painted symmetrical butterflies. The children painted a pattern on one side of their butterfly and folded it over to print the same pattern on the other side. We have learnt that symmetrical means something is the same on both sides.

On Friday, the children were so excited to make their wormeries. We used shovels and spades to dig in the soil to find worms. We filled our bottles with a layer of soil and then a layer of sand until it was full; this will allow us to see how the worms travel through the soil and the sand. The children had so much fun making them, and I am sure you will all find a place for them in your gardens at home!

We began our week with a lovely visit to Christ Church. The children learnt all about the true meaning of Easter and why we celebrate it. The children listened to the story of Jesus dieing on the cross on Good Friday and coming back to life on Easter Sunday. We learnt that we have Easter eggs to represent the cave/tomb that Jesus was put in when he died, before he came back to life.

The children have enjoyed learning all about Spring this week. We went for a walk around our school grounds, and down the lane at the side of school. We wore our high visibility jackets to keep us safe. On our walk we wrote down the different signs of Spring that we could see.

On Friday, we enjoyed an Easter egg hunt around the classroom. The children were so excited to hunt for there eggs, we haven't opened them yet, so we hope the Easter Bunny has left us a sweet treat inside.

We also had a visit from Natalie and Elaine who are our local Community Support Officers. The children wrote the own questions to ask, and listened carefully to what Natalie and Elaine had to say. We are very thankful for the hard work they do. They have asked us to say hello to them whenever we see them out and about.

In Maths, we have learnt how to share amounts equally into two groups. We shared the pears and carrots from our fruit basket. Once we had shared them out, we counted them to check that they were in equal amounts.

This week the children have loved learning about people who help us, particularly the police. Our role play area has turned into a police station, and the children have loved being able to act as Police Officers and help other people in our class.

We had a special visit from Willow's Auntie this week, who is a real police officer. She very kindly told us all about her job, and how the police are there to help us and keep us safe. She let us try on her uniform and look at each of the tools that she uses for her job, such as handcuffs, torches and police badges.

On Thursday, we all walked in to a crime scene in Reception! Some one had stolen Betsie and Bumble Bear from our classroom. Luckily the police had been able to capture pictures of the criminal for us to look at. We looked at the clues and wrote Wanted posters to help us find him. The children each dressed up in police officer uniforms and searched the school for them. We were overjoyed when we found them safely in Year 4 classroom.

The children also enjoyed exploring with the book fair this week. We discussed how we should look after our books, treat them with care and enjoy reading them and listening to stories.

This week we have read the story Whatever Next! Which is all about Baby Bear going to the moon in a space in a cardboard box. The children acted the story out using the role play masks and props, we focused on using expression for the different characters and retelling the story in the correct order. In our writing we looked at writing speech bubbles for the characters from the story and retelling it.

In Maths, we have learnt how to double numbers. We understand that doubling is adding the same number together. We used the play dough to double the amount of spots the ladybirds had and write the number sentence to go with them. Excellent work Reception.

We enjoyed a PE lesson with Miss White on Friday, we played a traffic light game and focused on the effects that exercise had on our hearts. We noticed that when we were exercising our hearts were beating very fast to pump the blood around our bodies to all of our muscles, and when we stopped it started to slow down.

This week in Literacy, we have read the Man on the Moon. We received a letter from Bob (the man on the moon) asking for our help. We wrote letters to tell him that it was the aliens making the mess on the moon, not the other astronauts. We also made telescopes to look up into space to find him, and a lot of the children saw him. Make sure you use your telescopes at night, when it will be easier to spot him.

In Maths, we have learning about Subtraction. The children understand that subtract means taking away and having a smaller amount. This week we practiced our subtraction by making planets in the play dough, jumping backwards on a number line, and also counting backwards in our head. We are so impressed with how well the children have understood this maths concept.

This week, we also celebrated Pancake Day! Year 3 held an assembly for the whole school to tell us all about Mardis Gras, which means 'Fat Tuesday.' In class each of the children flipped a pancake, with Mrs Mathers' special pancake making pan, and enjoyed a yummy, chocolate filled pancake.

We enjoyed a trip to Haydock Library on Wednesday. The children explored with different books, went on a character hunt, and listened to stories. Thank you to our helpers for walking with us

All of the children looked fabulous in their costumes for World Book Day! You all went to a great effort...

Welcome back ot the second half of the spring term. It is lovely to have the children back in school and eager to begin our new topic of Space and Aliens.

Well done to Star of the Week Finlay, for excelling in her writing this week. It has been amazing! Finlay wrote two descriptive sentences about the aliens underpants and she wrote in pre-cursive handwriting. Keep it up Finlay!

This week the children have enjoyed reading Aliens Love Underpants. We found it very funny to read, when it mentioned Granny's spotted bloomers! We went on an Underpants Hunt around the school hall, when we found the underpants we thought of describing words for them and most of us used them in sentences. Make sure you're checking your underwear draw for any aliens that may be hiding!

To follow on from reading Aliens Love Underpants the children designed their own underpants, knickers and bloomers to write describing sentences in their literacy books. It is fantastic to see the children applying what they are learning in phonics sessions into their writing.

Our Maths learning this week has been focused on money; we have learnt to recognise coins and understand their value. A Farm Shop has been set up in our Maths area for the children to develop their role play and language related to money. During our activities we added coins together to pay the shop keeper and some of us needed to work out the change.

This week the children have enjoyed learning about different types of transport and vehicles. On Monday, we went for a walk to the top of Grange Valley to see how many different types of transport we could find. We saw cars, vans, a motorbike and a bus. The friendly bus driver beeped at us and gave us all a wave. All of the children wore their high visibility jackets to make sure that the traffic could see us easily. We spoke about how to stay safe when crossing the roads. The children all understand that we need to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN!

On Tuesday, we celebrated Safer Internet Day as a whole school. This years theme was '#giveasmile.'  The aim was to make children aware that the pictures they post online should not reveal their identity or school in any way. As we know, taking selfies and using emoji's can be lots of fun, but we need to make sure that we are safe when we are doing it. Our library was turned into a 'Selfie Booth' for the children to take pictures using emoji's to cover their faces. Lyndsey came into Reception to read us a story 'Chicken Clickin', to remind us that we our mums and dads must know when we are using phones, tablets or computers to make sure that we are safe.

We enjoyed our Valentines Disco on Wednesday, the children danced their socks off, and they all looked wonderful!

We held our Messy Maths Workshop on Thursday, it was wonderful how many parents could come and join in the fun activities with us. The afternoon was designed to help you understand how we teach maths through play in Reception, and to give you some ideas for supporting your child's learning and development at home. Thank you to all who attended, we hope you enjoyed it as much as the children did.

This week we have enjoyed learning about the Arctic. We have looked the similarities and differences between here and the arctic, and learnt some names of Arctic animals. We received a very special postcard from Alfie in the Arctic and we worked hard to write sentences to tell him all about us and send a postcard back. Mrs Mather found some frozen hands on the playground with a special note from a Snow Queen. She told us that the hands were magical and when we touched them we would be transported to different magical places. The children produced some brilliant writing around this.

On Wednesday we enjoyed a fantastic trip to the World Museum in Liverpool. The children had a brilliant day, and their behaviour was brilliant. It was lovely to see them making links in their learning from our dinosaur topic. We were able to explore all of the different levels such as; aquarium, mini-beasts, dinosaurs, arctic, and the rain forest.

In Maths, we have explored with 3D shapes. We have learnt the names of a sphere, cube, cuboid, cone and cylinder. We played lots of games learning to describe the properties of the shapes, if they have corners, edges or faces. The children have been helping to build towers with the shapes. Excellent learning reception.

We started off this week, with a lovely winters walk on a cold and foggy morning. We took clipboards out with us to write down all of the signs of winter we could find, such as; bare trees, fog, frost, and rain. The difference in the children's writing from when we went on our Autumn walk is amazing!

The children decided to make bird feeders this week, to make sure the birds have enough food for the cold, winter months. We used lard, cheese, peanuts, seeds and raisins. It got very messy when we were mixing the ingredients together, and our hands felt very slimy and sticky. If you would like to make them at home for your garden all you need is a piece of string.

For our Literacy work this week, we became scientists. We wanted to find out the quickest way to melt ice. Each of the children wrote their own equipment list, prediction and results in their science booklet. We decided to complete our experiment with the sun, radiator, hot water, a hairdryer and warm hands. Ask the children which one melted the ice the fastest.

Our Maths learning this week has been subtraction. I am so impressed with how well the children have understood such a tricky concept. Well done Reception. We used cotton balls as our snowmen complete subtraction problems. We practiced saying and writing subtraction number sentences.

This week has been so busy with non stop fun, excitement and learning as always in Reception. This was our final week learning about Dinosaurs, and it was amazing! We started the week off becoming 'fossil hunters' and learning all about fossils and creating our own using salt dough. We left them all week to dry in the warm airing cupboard and painted them on Friday.

In Maths, we have been learning how to tell the time. We have been reading o'clock times, playing 'What time is it Mr Wolf?' and making our own watches. It was great to see so many children wearing their own watches from home this week; they were all eager to use them to see when it was dinner time!

On Wednesday, we could not believe our eyes when we came back into the Reception classroom after hymn practice. Our classroom was a mess, and we found enormous dinosaur footprints on the ground. The children become news reporters and wrote about what had happened to tell the rest of the school. I was so impressed with the writing the children produced. Luckily, Miss Daniels' iPad was left on record, and caught the whole thing on video. Have a look...

We also learnt about volcanoes this week, and the children created their own volcanic eruption with diet coke and mentos. The children had so much fun watching it explode out of the bottles. You can easily repeat this experiment at home by placing two mentos mints in a bottle of coke (diet works better.)

This week the children enjoyed dance lessons with Emma. They were happy to be taking part in it again this term. The children practiced moving around the hall in different ways with their bodies. On Friday we also enjoyed PE with Miss Daniels. We practiced balancing on equipment and travelling carefully across them.

We have been working hard all week to build our 'Dino World' out of junk modelling. We stuck boxes together and then covered it with newspaper and PVA glue to make it hard. The children then painted it and stuck leaves and twigs to it to bring it to life. It is all ready for our science investigation next week.

In Maths we have learnt about addition. We added two different groups together to find the total. We wanted to find out how many different ways we can make a total of ten which got the children thinking critically and independently. In our books we practiced writing addition calculations! The children have blown me away with how well they have understood this concept.

The children we excited to explore, learn and play in our new role play area which is a dinosaur museum. The children have enjoyed being archaeologists and digging for bones and fossils. We have also looked at different types of books, fiction and      non-fiction to help us with our work. The children understand that non-fiction books give us information and fiction books tell us a story.

We enjoyed a wonderful celebration assembly on Friday to celebrate being an OUTSTANDING  school in our recent OFSTED inspection. It was lovely to see how many parents/grandparents could join us for our Oscars Ceremony and releasing of our balloons. We hope our fantastic news travels far and wide!

We have had a lovely, busy last week of term in Reception. On Monday we were treated to watching the Key Stage 2 performance of the Polar Express. We were so excited to watch it, as a lot of the children had watched the film over the weekend. Nursery also invited us to watch their Christmas song-a-long, which was lots of fun. The children could remember doing theirs last year.

The highlight of the week was definitely our trip to Underwater Street in Liverpool. It is such a fantastic day out. The children loved taking part in decorating biscuits, decorations, watching science experiments, climbing walls and most importantly a visit from Father Christmas. We are so proud of the children's behaviour and how well they represented Grange Valley. Have a look at all the fun we had;

On Thursday we had our Christmas party with Year 1 and Year 2. We enjoyed a disco, party games, and lots of yummy party food. All of the children looked amazing in their party outfits. What a lovely way to end the final week before Christmas.

We would like to thank you all for your lovely cards and generous gifts, we appreciate it so much. We hope you all have a wonderful Christmas with your families, and come back to us safe and sound on Tuesday 3rd January.

This week started off with a visit to Christ Church with Sandra. We learnt about the true celebration of Christmas, and how Jesus was born to help us all. We also decorated our Christmas tree with the star decorations we had made in class.

We enjoyed our Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday afternoon. It was lovely to have the whole school together, singing Christmas carols, along with some parents and grandparents too. We had a special visit from Santa, which was so exciting. We're so glad that he could the time from his busy schedule.

This week we have performed our nativity 'Born in a Barn' for all of our parents and grandparents. We are so proud of the children for learning all of their songs and standing on the stage in front of all of those people. Well done children.

We enjoyed a yummy Christmas dinner this week. The children loved their food and enjoyed pulling crackers and wearing party hats and listening to the funny jokes inside them. What a lovely lunch time.

On Friday we enjoyed a special Christingle assembly by Sandra from Christ Church. We learnt that the orange represents the earth; the red ribbon represents that Jesus died for us on the cross; the sticks represent each of the four seasons; the sweets represent the wonderful things God has given us, and the candle is to represent the light that Jesus brought to the world. It was lovely to have so many parents and grandparents come into class to help make the Christingles. Don't forget to light them when you get home.

This week Reception have been getting very excited that Christmas is getting closer and closer. We looked through catalogues to chose the things they would like for Christmas. The children sounded out the names of the toys using their robot arms to write them down. They looked brilliant.

Father Christmas must have been watching us through his camera in our classroom, also on Wednesday we received a very special letter from Father Christmas! He asked us to write him individual letters to tell him what we want for Christmas. We also found a magic elf door in our classroom, with some elf dust left for us to make a Christmas wish on our playground. All week the elves have been getting up to mischief in our classroom, take a look...

We have also been very busy making our Christmas Cards, and Christmas tree decorations this week. We have snowmen cards and, and reindeer ornaments. The children have put lots of effort into making them, and I am sure you're all going to love them.

Reception have been bust using the iPad's to take pictures and use an app called 'Elf Booth.' We have made the pictures into key rings which you can purchase your child's elf picture at our Christmas Fair. They are adorable!

This week Reception have learnt all about different toys; old and new. In the creative area they all worked hard to design and build their own toys using the junk modelling and paints. As they built them, they discussed the different features of their toys and explained how they worked. Excellent work children.

Our role play area has changed into a toy shop. The children were so eager to use it, and it was fantastic to see how they were developing their language and vocabulary with each other, based on their own experiences. Whilst using the toy shop area the children have been able to learn all about money; pretending to buy things and asking how much things cost. We are encouraging the children to take turns in their play and listen to each others ideas.

Our Maths learning this week has been linked to money. We have looked at different coins, described them and learnt how to recognise them. We have played toy shop bingo with each other to recognise money written down, and match the amounts. The children them extended their learning independently in the toy shop role play.

Thank you to all of the parents who donated for our Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. They were collected on Thursday and Colin from the St Helens Rotary Club couldn't believe that we filled 80 shoe boxes! We have all helped to make a difference to 80 children this Christmas. This week is Anti-Bullying week and Reception have read the story The Rainbow Fish. The children have discussed how important it is to share, be kind to one another, and help each other when we are feeling sad. During the week our Rainbow Fish went missing from the classroom. Reception wanted to become Police Officers and Detectives to bring our Rainbow Fish back safely. The children wrote Wanted posters and stuck them up all around school for our friends and teachers to help us. Our wanted posters did the job, and we found our fish next to the fish tank in our library. The children think he swam away to be with his friends.

In Maths we have been learning about something very tricky...capacity! The children have blown me away with how well they have learnt about this topic. We have ordered containers from empty, half full and full, and practiced filling containers with sand, water and other classroom objects. The children learnt about containers having different capacities. We learnt that my Tesco shopping bag has a bigger capacity than my lunch bag as it can hold more inside of it. We tested our understanding by counting how many toys could fit into each bag. The children then extended their learning independently in provision.

We kick started the week with a dance lesson with Emma. As the children were so excited to talk about their Bonfire Night celebrations, the children learnt a dance to Katy Perry - Firework. The children we danced and jumped up and down like fireworks in the sky.

To continue with the children's interests of bonfire night, this week we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder Plot. The children were fascinated by the story and couldn't wait to act it out with each other. The children took on the roles of the characters and acted out a narrative with each other as a whole class, which then continued throughout the day as the children accessed continuous provision.

In Maths this week we have been learning how to measure different lengths and order things in order from smallest to longest. The children ordered pictures of rockets and extended their own learning in provision by measuring different objects with each other.

The children have made their own rockets and firework display pictures. Thank you for sending your junk modelling in. We created our firework pictures of mixing colours together to create new ones. The children created their rockets independently, and chose their resources themselves.

The children have had lots of time outside this week, and we also had lots of fun playing parachute games. Have a look at the slideshow to see the other things we have been learning and exploring with this week.

Have a good weekend

A big welcome back to the second half of the autumn term. It has been lovely to hear some of the fantastic things you have all been up to over the holidays. This week the children were very excited for Halloween, and they enjoyed celebrating it at our Ugly Bug disco. Their costumes were brilliant and they danced the afternoon away.

Our Literacy lessons have been linked to the children`s excitement of Halloween. The children thought of their own special potions to turn the teachers into frogs! They thought of lots of disgusting ingredients to go into them, and wrote them down a magical witch paper. A lot of us are now able to sound out and write CVC words, and some of us are beginning to write small captions.

In Maths we have practised counting out up to 20 objects and writing the numbers down. Most of us are confident with numbers to 10, we are now focusing on recognising and writing numbers to 20.

We had an important assembly this week from the local fire service. They told us how to stay afe on bonfire night, and to always be with an adult. Reception got to see thier fire engine on the school car park.

We have made our own spiders this week to go on the huge spider web that we have on our classroom window. Each of the spiders are very unique, with their googley eyes and legs. Some of them even have gel and flowers in their hair!

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe if you are celebrating Bonfire Night.

This week was our final dance lesson with Emma. The children have enjoyed listening to stories, and then turning them into dance with music. For the last few weeks the children have covered The Gruffalo, and We're going on a Bear Hunt. On Monday the children were making their way through the 'swishy-swashy grass' from the Bear Hunt. It looked like lots of fun, and the children really enjoyed it.

The children have also been busy in the creative area, making their own bears from Goldilocks. The children decided which bear they wanted to creative, and discussed why they where our favourite characters.

We have read the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears this week. The children enjoyed changing their voices and using expression for each of the different characters; Daddy Bear was our favourite. The children wanted to try some yummy porridge just like Goldilocks from the story. We discussed the ingredients and things we needed to make it, and we chose a lovely filling of either, banana, strawberries, nutella or syrup. The children all understood how to use the equipment safely, such as the microwave and knives. It was great to see how independent and sensible they could be. Our classroom smelt lovely!

We also enjoyed watching Year 4's Harvest assembly on Thursday. It was amazing to see how much food had been donated to the food bank from our children and families. Harvest is a time to be grateful and thankful for having food available to us when we need it. During circle time Reception have discussed how other children around the world are not as lucky as us and that it is important to offer help to other people.

In Maths we have looked at 2D shapes. We built the cottage from Goldilocks and discussed which shapes we were using for the different parts of the house. We are learning to discuss the properties of the shapes, e.g. how many corners and sides a shape has.

Have a lovely half term break, see you all on Monday 31st October

This week, the children have enjoyed learning all about Harvest. They have extended their learning and developed their understanding by accessing the activities in continuous provision. We explored with different foods that contain wheat...it got very messy!

In our Literacy lessons we have read the story 'Little Red Hen.' The children are able to tell the story independently from start to finish. We have enjoyed discussing the characters and acting out the story together. There are definitely some future actors in our midst.

We also had a trip to the Library on Wednesday afternoon. We listened to a story, sang nursery rhymes, had a number hunt, and explored with the different books available for us in our local library. The children had a lovely time, and it would be brilliant for you all to become a member of the library by taking out a library car. follow this link:

This week the children in Reception wanted to make a surprise for Ellis in our class. They decided to decorate his wheelchair, and make it into a 'super chair' which turns Ellis into a superhero when he sits in it. Ellis loved the surprise, and the children where so happy to see that Ellis liked it so much. What a kind and thoughtful class of children we have!

Reception made their own bread this week, just like the Little Red Hen from the story. We looked at our ingredients list, and the list of instructions to make the bread. We mixed the ingredients together and needed the bread with our hands. Our classroom smelt lovely, just like a bakers shop. It tasted yummy too.

Have a good weekend.

On Monday the children enjoyed a music lesson with Miss Prescott. They explored the sounds that different instruments make, and worked hard to make quiet sounds and loud sounds. They then worked in groups to perform music as the Grange Valley Band, playing their instruments together to create music.

On Tuesday we enjoyed an Autumn walk around our schools woodland area. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful area for the children to explore in. On our walk we kept our eyes peeled for signs of Autumn. The children made marks, drew pictures and sounded out some words of the things they could see. We collected lots of conkers, sticks, autumn leaves, acorns and conker husks. All of the items we collected have been in our Discovery area in class for the children to explore and expand their learning.

On Wednesday the children wanted to create their own hedgehog pictures. We were disappointed that we didn't find any on our Autumn walk, but when we read one of our information books, we learnt that hedgehogs are nocturnal which means they only come out at night time, and sleep all day. We painted our hedgehog pictures brown then collected more leaves to stick on to create their spikes. The look brilliant on our Autumn display.

In Maths on Thursday we were learning the days of the week. We discussed what days we come to school and which days are the weekend. We also spoke about different times of the day, and which things we do in the day time and night time, such as having breakfast and going to bed. We then decided to put our school day in order. The children were very good at this, as we complete our activity train each day as a whole class.

Have a great weekend

This week the children have really enjoyed exploring and playing in our new superhero station role play area, which includes a bat cave. The children have been able to act out narratives together and develop their language and imaginations. It has been lots of fun.

The children have enjoyed learning all about super powers this week. We have made our own superhero bracelets to give ourselves powers. We had fire, freezing, super fast and invisible powers. Reception is full of real super heroes.

In Maths we have been looking at different patterns and creating our own with different objects around the classroom and on the playground. The children are all able to describe what a pattern is, and some of us can make them with more than 3 different objects.

We continued with our dance lessons this week. The children listened to the story of the Gruffalo, and had to move their bodies like the animals from the story. They had lots of fun.

In Maths we have practiced counting out objects one at a time, and understanding that a number represents how many objects are in a group. We counted objects to 10 and 20 and selected the correct numeral for the amount of jungle animals we had.

Our creative activity this week was to create our own superhero masks, as we wanted to make ourselves a disguise. The children selected their own resources and each one is very unique.

This week we had our first PE lesson with school's dance teacher Emma. She was so impressed at how well the children could perform and move their bodies in different ways. We are encouraging the children to get undressed and changed independently, you can help us by working on this at home too.

On Tuesday, we celebrated Roald Dahl's 100th birthday, and each of the children in school dressed up as their favourite character from one of his amazing stories. The children all looked fantastic, and enjoyed talking about the characters they had came as. We also enjoyed story tiem at the end of the day with our parents. It was great to see how many of you came to join in with us.

This week, to escape the heat of the Reception classroom, we explored around our woodland, forest area. The children were collecting sticks and twigs to pretend making a camp fire, and we practiced our balancing skills, walking along the logs.

They have now completed their first week in Reception, and we can't believe how well they have settled into a new environment, with new teachers, and a very busy school routine. We are very proud of them all.
