Welcome to Reception class 18/19 website page. This year the children will focus on a range of themes to engage and inspire their learning.

Harry Potter Week!.

Reception’s Summer Learning Journey

The first week of term the children were looking at a Frog’s Life Cycle. In Reception we had tadpoles that the children could observe each day. We encouraged the children to observe the tadpoles and write sentences about what they could see. We have continued with our Singapore Maths theme and the children have looked at numbers to 10 and missing numbers.

The next week the children focused on different minibeasts. Both of the Reception went on a minibeast hunt to find different creatures in our forest area. The children created their own wormeries that they could take home and observe. In Maths the children focused on counting objects.

This week the children focused on animals and their different habitats. They really took an interest to this theme and loved learning about the different animals and where they live. This information helped the children write a fact file of an animal of their choice. In other areas the children made their own animal habitat and really enjoyed playing with the different habitats that where set up in the small world area within class. In Maths this week the children focused on finding one more and one less of different numbers.

In the fifth week the children looked at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children began by reading the story and acting it out using their role play skills. The children then retold the story in their books practising capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. In maths the children looked at number bonds to different numbers.

The final week of the term was looking at farm animals. The children learnt about different farm animals and what it is like to live on the farm. In Literacy the children wrote a letter to ‘Farmer Jack’ to talk about what they have learnt and to ask him questions about what happens on his farm. In Maths the children continued to look at number bonds and then making number stories. The children also used their creative skills to create their own farm animals mask.

In Summer 2 the children had a brilliant Harry Potter week were they could dress up in accessories, make potions, make wands and also imagine they are going to Hogwarts. The children wrote a brilliant piece of writing about what they did on Harry Potter Day and also instructions for their potions.

The children then moved onto looking at Pirates for two weeks. The children looked at famous pirates, created their own treasure maps with instructions and also wrote a message in a bottle to a Pirate. In Maths the children looked at using a number line to add two numbers together. The children used their creative skills to create treasure maps, pirate ships and dressed up as their favourite pirates. We also took part in Sports Day this week where the children ran a sprint race and a fun run.

The week after we focused on the story of Handa’s Surprise. The children tried lots of new types of fruit to see if they liked them. In Maths the children focused on subtracting two numbers. During this week we also went on a lovely trip to Croxteth Park where the children took part in lots of different activities.

The final two themes of term were focusing on seaside and summer. The children used the FANTASTIC symbols to write about what it is like at the seaside. They also looked at the season of Summer and some of the changes that we see. We compared this to Autumn, Winter and Spring. During the last two weeks we had lots of fun things such as a summer disco and the summer fair.

Reception’s Spring 1 Learning Journey

During the first week  of the half term the children looked at Transport. Mr Ashton realised that the children had a big interest in trains and cars so decided to focus on different types of transport and travelling. The children focused on writing a sentence about travelling in a type of transport. In Maths the children focused on adding two groups together. We used number lines to add two numbers together.

In the next two weeks of the half term the children focused on dinosaurs. The children learnt facts about different dinosaurs and also had a dinosaur enter our classroom and mess it all up! During these two weeks the children wrote about what happened in the classroom when the dinosaur visited and also created a fact file about dinosaurs, In Math the children have looked at one more and one less than a given number.  In the second week the children also focused on telling the time. They did very well at this and looked at telling the time when it was o'clock and half past. The children also made their own dinosaur fossil pictures using pasta shapes.

The next week we looked at Winter. The children went on a winter walk around the school and created their own snowman pictures using cotton wool and other materials. The children wrote about the different things they could see, feel, hear and smell on the Winter walk. This week was our 'Money, Money, Money' week so we had very interesting visits from Oscar's dad, Robyn's mum and Siena's Dad to tell us about the different jobs that they do. The children focused on recognising coins and adding two coins together to link with our money week. On the Friday of this week the children dressed up as what they would like to be when they are older. It was a lovely day and the children all looked fantastic. There is a picture of everybody dressed up below :).

The week after we carried on our Winter theme by learning about Arctic Animals. The children learnt facts about the animals and used the FANTASTIC symbols to write about the Arctic. In Math the children focused on subtraction for the first time, using a number line to subtract one number from another. During this week we also had our 'Messy Maths' workshop. I hope you enjoyed coming in and doing Math with the children.

In the final week of term we had a health and well being week. This linked in with our visit from Paralympian Anna Jackson who completed an exercise circuit with the children. Reception absolutely loved this and asked Mr Ashton if they could do exercise videos in class. During this week we looked at healthy eating, exercise, created a healthy meal and grouped which foods we thought were unhealthy. After completing assessment Mr Ashton decided to focus on one less of numbers between 10 and 20. During this week the children tasted new fruits and created their own fruit pictures.

During the first two weeks of term the children looked at Halloween and Bonfire night. The children were very excited to dress up in their Halloween costumes and go trick of treating. In these two weeks we wrote potions using rhyming words, that we then made in class. In Maths we also learnt about one more and one less, as well as measuring different objects.

The third week was anti-bullying week so we looked at the story of the Rainbow Fish. Our week was based around being good friends and being kind. We began to write sentences describing parts of the story. In Maths we practice adding two groups together to find the total.

The next week we looked at Old and New toys. The children really enjoyed this as we looked at toys they use, as well as toys that their parents used. The children felt and observed old and new toys, then discussed the materials and how they felt.

The next week we looked at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children made porridge and tried different toppings including blueberries, bananas and honey. The children wrote a recount of parts of the story. In Maths we discussed 3D shapes for the first time, looking at their names and their properties.

The next two weeks was when our Christmas started as it was the start of December. We had a lovely few weeks until the end of term. We did things like our school trip to Imagine That, our Christmas party, performed a nativity play, had Christmas dinner in the hall and made calendar/cards. We also learnt  about the Nativity story and wrote Letters to Santa. We also wrote about our trip to Imagine That. In Maths we created patterns using 2D shapes (Christmas presents).
