.......................................................................................................END OF TERM................................................................................................

Thursday 19th December 2013

Well, we have finally reached the end of term and the end of my first year as Head of Grange Valley! It has been a wonderful and very busy term full of laughter and Christmas cheer! I would like to say a BIG thank you to all the children, staff and parents who have supported me throughout the year, I have had a steep learning curve, met some great people and fallen in love with the GV community!!

As promised please find photographs of the Christmas X Factor below!

I hope all our families have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, See you all in 2014!

Wednesday 18th December 2013

What a fantastic day!! Nursery had their Christmas party and Mrs Denton came to see the children, Mrs Denton will return to work in January, we can't wait to have her back. Christmas dinner was lovely the children and staff had great fun together!

KS2 performed their X Factor show twice today and it was amazing!! Well done children I think you're all stars!! I promise to post lots of photographs tomorrow. Tomorrow is the last day and we will be having a whole school assembly to remind us about the true meaning of Christmas.

Tuesday 17th December 2013

This afternoon we have had the KS2 party! All the children have had a great time playing party games and tucking into party food! Tomorrow will be yet another busy day with the Christmas dinner and the 'Grange Valley's X Factor' performance.

Monday 16th December 2013

Only 3 more days to go until the end of term and we've had yet another lovely day at Grange Valley! Reception and Year 2 went to Christ Church for their Christmas experiences and 'Lamb Nativity'.

I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all at Christ Church for making us all feel so welcome and making so much effort with the children.

Year 1 will be going to Christ Church tomorrow morning!

At 11 o'clock our youngest children in the Nursery performed their Christmas songs for their parents. All the children were involved and sang beautifully. It's not easy to get lots of 3 year olds to perform in front of a crowd but the children were super!!!

Friday 13th December 2013

A very exciting party day for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2! The children enjoyed the dancing, food and visit from Santa, I hope they are not too hyperactive for you tonight, hopefully with all the excitement of today they might sleep!

Best joke of the day, pulled from one of the crackers in Year 1 - What is Mum and Dad's favourite carol?   Silent Night!

Thursday 12th December 2013

What a lovely afternoon! Reception, Year1 and Year 2 gave their best performance yet as they performed their version of the Christmas story! (more photographs to follow!)

Mrs Threlkeld, Mrs Gabbitas and Miss Abbott took the choir to Haydock Youth and Community Centre. The children were once again fantastic and a credit to our school.  The children were invited along with local residents, members of the Youth Service, Community Police, students from Haydock High, local Councillors and the Mayor.  We would very much like to thank Ian Jones, chair of Haydock Community Group for inviting us  and everyone involved for their hospitality.  The children chattered all the way back to school, excited to open their little gifts!

Wednesday 11th December 2013

Today has been yet another busy day!

Year 6 and Year 4 went to Christ Church for their Christmas experience, all staff and children had a wonderful time and wanted to thank the members of the church for organising such a fantastic event!

Nursery have been busy practising their Christmas sing along for Reception and their siblings. The children can't wait to perform for their parents on Monday 16th at 11am!

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 performed their second Christmas Play for  Toddlers, Grandparents, Mrs Fowler and Mrs Murphy. It was, yet again, fantastic! Well done Children.

Update on our tree: Mrs Threlkeld has been painting away and it is beginning to look more like a tree!

Tuesday 10th December 2013

This morning, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 performed, their first Christmas play, 'Born in a Barn' for our Nursery children, Year 5, Year 6 and Reception parents. It was amazing, the children sang and performed beautifully and even managed to bring a tear to my eye!!

Monday 9th December 2013

The children, in years 1 to 6, had so much fun today at the pantomime! "OH YES THEY DID"!

Friday 6th December 2013

It's th end of another busy week, where is the time going? We have 1 week and 4 very busy days left. At the moment I'm sat listening to KS2 singing their heart out practising for the X Factor show, which will be held on Wednesday 18th December at 6pm. You will all be in for a treat!!

Have a great weekend!

Thursday 5th December 2013

Wind, wind, wind is the theme of today! We have shortened all playtimes today to ensure our children are safe and calm, because as we know the wind whips children up into a frenzy! Hope you all had a safe journey home!

Wednesday 4th December 2013

This afternoon, our KS2 Choir went out of school to sing for the residents at 'Heyeswood'. The children had a lovely time meeting all the lovely ladies and gentlemen who live there!

Thank you to all our parents who managed to have a clear out at home and fill lots of  'Blue Bags' for us to weigh in. This  helps us raise money for the children in our school and all your contributions are gratefully received! When we know how much is raised we will let you know.

Tuesday 3rd December 2013

Today I had the pleasure of visiting Santa's Workshop in Y1.  It was very interesting to see how Santa and his elves make their toys!

Monday 2nd December 2013

What a lovely start to the Christmas season! Thank you to all our Parents and Grandparents who came to watch our first ever 'Tree Lighting' event and to the Christmas fair, that followed. All the staff and children had a magical time especially when Santa turned up! (Photographs now on our Home page!)

Friday 29th November 2013

Trees have been the theme of the day! Our indoor 'Grange Valley Learning Tree' has developed and now looks more like a tree with a brown trunk. Staff and children have been busy painting! Our new outdoor Christmas tree, as you may have noticed (or not) is still not in situ, as I have sent 2 scrawny twigs back! Fingers crossed the Local Authority will find us an appropriate tree over the weekend and ready for Tree Lighting on Monday! (if all else fails we will be singing to a 2ft conifer with a very unhappy Headteacher!!!)

Thursday 28th November 2013

We are all getting very excited for Christmas! This morning the whole school went outside to see if we could all fit around our new Christmas tree (which hopefully is coming tomorrow!). We can't wait to sing Christmas songs and see the lights being switched on. Please come and join us from 2pm on Monday, it should be a special day! and don't forget the PTFA Christmas fair will run straight after the lighting of the tree.

Wednesday 27th November 2013

Judo seems to be a great hit with the children, they were having great fun this evening. We have also had the electrics sorted today ready for the arrival of our  own outdoor  Christmas tree, we are all getting very excited now!

Tuesday 26th November 2013

I had a lovely chat to children today, as I took a walk outdoors at lunch time, the children were all playing really well together and enjoying the weather at the moment!  I am beginning to get excited now for Christmas as the school gets ready for all our Christmas events! Don't forget it is our Tree Lighting on Monday 2nd December at 2pm followed by our Christmas Fayre!  If you can help at all please call in and let us know we would be most grateful.  We are also looking for good quality nearly new toys for our toy stall!

Monday 25th November 2013

Happy Monday!

A big thank you to all the members of the PTFA, Parents and Staff who came to the Race Night on Friday. It was a lovely evening and we managed to raise £15 more than last year!

Thursday 21st November 2013

Yet another busy day at Grange Valley, groups of children have been busy helping us make the branches for our 'Learning Tree'. I can't wait to see the finished product! Don't forget own clothes tomorrow!

Wednesday 20th November 2013

"Thank goodness!" Our ICT problems, seem to, have all been solved I can't believe how much we rely on computers, emails and the internet!

Y6 took part in a Climbing Tournament today at Haydock High and WON! Well done children!

Tuesday 19th November 2013

Today I visited craft club with Miss Preston at lunch time, the children were very busy working on branches for our Grange Valley Tree. We are having problems uploading photographs at the moment so as soon as we can photographs will follow!

Monday 18th November 2013

This morning our school Governors came into school to take part in a 'learning walk'. The Governors managed to visit every classroom and speak to staff, children and the school council. All governors were impressed with the lovely school atmosphere and with how our children were happy, confident and independent learners! Photographs to follow...

Friday 15th November 2013

Today we have enjoyed coming into school dressed as our Super Hero, everyone looked fabulous in order to raise money for Children in Need! The children have had assembly this morning to make them aware of the reason we raise money for this charity and had fun identifying their teacher's favourite hero! They then returned to class for lots of Pudsey challenges and learning activities, see class blogs for more photos and information.

Thursday 14th November 2013

A big thank you to all our parents who attended Parents' Evening this week, we had a fantastic turn out and lots of positive comments. Thank you also to those parents who contributed to the development of our tree, photographs to follow!

Wednesday 13th November 2013

Today our thoughts and prayers are with the Roby family.

Tuesday 12th November 2013

How exciting, four girls from Year 6 were chosen to participate in a girls cricket coaching session led by England Cricket Captain Charlotte Edwards and Danielle, both part of the Ashes winning side in 2013. The opportunity became available through the ‘Chance to Shine Ambassadors Programme’. Fay, Molly, Allana and Shannon had a great time and were a little star struck when they met Charlotte and Danielle!

The girls were really excited to bring back all that they had learned and will now use their skills to coach others both during class sport sessions and during playground leader games.

Monday 11th November 2013

Today is Armistice Day, a day in which we honoured members of the armed forces who died in both World Wars and in all conflicts since. This morning, year 6 led a fantastic assembly in honour of the day and at 11 o'clock we all fell silent. We talked about World War 1 and World War 2 and why we remember the soldiers with the symbol of the Poppy. Did you know that there is a right and wrong way of wearing your poppy? Apparently, the leaf of the poppy must point in the same direction as if it was a hand on the clock pointing at 11 o'clock.

After school all week we have the book fayre in the hall with some fantastic titles and gifts for Christmas!

Friday 8th November 2013

Where has the week gone? Children and staff have worked so hard this week to try and get ready for Parents Evening next week. Individual times and dates should have gone out with the children today. We are all looking forward to see you and celebrating your child's hard work this term!

Next week will be busy! The whole school is working on the story and animation of 'The Midnight  Man'. I can't wait to see what the children will be doing and hopefully they will all be coming home and telling you about it! We also have the book fair on next week and Children in Need on Friday!

Thursday 7th November 2013

Sorry for the late night blog but our school computer server decided to stop working today (which made us all a little fed up!) I promise I will post a better blog entry tomorrow!

Wednesday 6th November 2013

We have an exciting development in the entrance area! This afternoon, Year 5 have started our 'Grange Valley Learning Tree'. All children (and as many parents /carers as we can involve) will be part of building our tree. It might be a good idea if children could bring in an old, over-sized shirt to protect their uniform whilst helping make the tree!

I will keep you informed about the 'growth' of our tree and hopefully when it is finished the tree will display lots of things that we learn daily at Grange Valley.

Tuesday 5th November 2013

Bonfire night is finally here, many of our children are very excited, if you are having a party/bonfire/fireworks please enjoy yourself and keep safe!

HISTORY - In 1605, thirteen men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Britain's most notorious traitor. On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.

We can remember this historical event with a rhyme!

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.

By god's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

Monday 4th November 2013

This week’s merit is 'I can co-operate with others in work and play'. The children had a wonderful assembly with Mrs Threlkeld this morning and now all staff are on the lookout for children who really can co-operate. Merits will be given out during Friday's assembly!

Friday 1st November 2013

During assembly today the Fire Service spoke to the children about fire safety, if you are visiting a bonfire and watching fireworks over the next few days please have lots of fun but stay very SAFE!

More on my mystery Invitation! ... Well, we have a very sneaky Year 5!! At 2:30 today I went to their class to look at their amazing maths work (on invite) only to find that they had been planning a surprise birthday party for me! Very overwhelming Thank you Year 5! Thank you also to Year 1 and their amazing card!!

11:51 - Exciting! I have just received an invitation from Year 5. They have asked me to go and see their amazing maths work at 2:30 today. I will take my ipad so that I can update you later...

Thursday 31st October 2013

Happy Halloween everyone! It has been a busy day for our Early Years children! The Nursery children came in to school in fancy dress and had the most amazing party day, while the Reception children 'accidentally' turned me into a frog!!! Luckily they knew a great spell to turn me back!

Wednesday 30th October 2013

What a great day! The children (and staff) enjoyed last night’s spooky disco so much that most of the classes have been very creative and weaved it into their learning! Year 5 have finished off their symmetrical pumpkins and Year 1 now have an amazing 'Room on The Broom' display area. Tomorrow, Year 6 are writing friendship potions.

Information about parents evening will be out by the end of the week.

Tuesday 29th October 2013

A fantastic time had by all at the Ugly Bug Balls, this evening!!

Monday 28th October 2013

Welcome back to all our children and families! The horrible wet, winter weather was, however, very unwelcome! The rain has left a huge lake in the middle of our playground which has meant the children could not play out, even when the rain had stopped.

This morning we had a very exciting and informative assembly delivered by Peter Blood (Judo Coach). Peter showed the children some of the games played at Judo club and talked to them about the disciplined sport. We are starting a new Judo club next week, which excited all the children. Children in year 1, 2, & 3 will bring a letter home tonight; places are limited so if you are keen please return the letter ASAP. For those year groups and individuals who do not get a place we will run the club again.

This afternoon I have had some very spooky visitors!! Reception parents and children have been busy over the half term making spooky decorations for the reception classroom. Fabulous!

.......................................................................................................HALF TERM BREAK........................................................................................................................

Friday 18th October 2013

What a fantastic end the half term!

Spirits have been high in all classes, children and staff have worked incredibly hard and deserve a short break! This morning in Reception the children made some delicious carrot soup, Chloe and Megan brought me some to try, yum yum!

Year 2 have raised a staggering £50 from their cake sale! The money will be added to the children's playground and equipment fund.

 HARVEST

At the end the day the whole school were treated to a fantastic Harvest Assembly from Year 3 and 4.

Thursday 17th October 2013

Some of the children in year 2 have organised a cake sale for tomorrow afternoon (Friday 18th). The children will be selling cakes during afternoon break, each cake will cost 20p. If any parents want to donate cakes I'm sure year 2 would be very grateful!

Yesterday, Year 6 and Reception worked together planting daffodils for the 'Marie Curie Mini Pots of Care' fundraising event.

Wednesday 16th October 2013

Tuesday 15th October 2013

There are lots going on in school today! On a walk around this morning it was lovely to see all the classes engrossed in their learning, this is what I saw...

In Nursery the children have painted a GIANT red tractor for a display. The children couldn't wait to show me!

In Reception the children were working hard to sequence the story of 'The Little Red Hen'. Matthew was so proud of his work!

In Year 1 Libby couldn’t wait to show me her Target book, she has worked so hard with her handwriting style.

In Year 2 the children were learning about speech marks, I was so impressed with how much they have progressed in their learning. Ethan and Callum couldn't wait to read out their super sentences!

In Year 3 and 4 the children were practicing their assembly; the singing is amazing and sent a chill up my spin as I walked through the hall! I can’t wait to watch their assembly on Friday!

In Year 5 the children were busy working on their maths. They were so engrossed that they didn't notice me when I walked through the door!

In Year 6 Miss Pritchard was delivering some helpful tips on exam techniques, tips that Year 6 will need for their SATs next year!

Monday 14th October 2013

During assembly today we discussed 'What Grange Valley meant to us!' the children came up with some lovely ideas! We also talked about our mission statement or motto (as the children called it). The children knew the meaning behind 'Inspire to guide, challenge and achieve' we enjoyed talking about it and also liked the idea of blogging our 'pupil voice' in some way. Any suggestions welcome!

This afternoon Year 3 went on an Autumn walk to gather some inspiration for their Autumn poems.

Friday 11th October 2013

Well the cold weather has finally hit us! There are lots of lovely coloured leaves falling off the trees and the children have been outside studying the change in the season. I hope all our families have a lovely weekend!

Thursday 10th October 2013

What started as a very cold and wintery day soon turned into a warm sunny day perfect for gardening! I spent all dinnertime with huge group of children, from a variety of classes, digging and watering the garden. Tranquil to say the least!

Afterschool club have also been busy, tonight, making and decorating biscuits! I hope Mrs Campbell and Mrs Taylor saved one for me!

Finally, A big thank you and congratulations to Miss Pritchard, Mrs Steel and all our gardeners for achieving a Level 1 award from the Royal Horticultural Society. They achieved this level for knowing and demonstrating the importance of plants in our lives. Mrs Steel is sure we will achieve Level 2 very soon! watch this space...

Wednesday 9th October 2013

Year 1 have had a visitor! The children were so excited when a Lion knocked on their classroom door. The Lion was great fun but also quite naughty, as he ate Year 1’s entire snack! Year 1 told me that they were now going to become 'little' authors and write about the Lions visit, just like Judith Kerr did when she wrote the well-known and much loved story, The Tiger Who came to Tea.

Tuesday 8th October 2013

Bronze kitemark for PE and School Sport!

We have been awarded a nationally recognised kitemark award for provision of PE and School Sport.  There are three levels available, Bronze, Silver and Gold, Grange Valley has proudly achieved the Bronze award.  We have been recognised not only for our developing curriculum provision but also for the growing number of competitions we have entered this year. A big thank you to Miss Prescott for all her hard work!

Monday 7th October 2013

What a lovely day for gardening! Lots of the children got 'stuck in' today clearing leaves and weeding the beds. I was very impressed with how they worked together and were so willing to work hard. Gardening club seems to be attracting lots of children during playtimes and lunch times. Photographs of the fun will follow!

Friday 4th October 2013

Despite the weather we've had a lovely afternoon! Three children from Years 4, 5 and 6 where invited in to Mrs Thrlkeld's room for a 'work sharing' tea party! The children enjoyed a cup of tea and a cake whilst sharing their work with each other. Harry enjoyed looking at and discussing Jarod's Henry VIII work, whilst Eleanor felt very proud when she shared her fantastic handwriting styles with the boys! We can't wait for next week's afternoon tea I wonder who is going to be invited?

Thursday 3rd October 2013

"Now it's time for me to go and have a lie down!"

Monday 30th September 2013

Mrs Threlkeld took assembly this morning and looked at what a wonderful world we all live in and discussed what can happen when we forget to look after our world!  Year 5 came to visit this afternoon to show some fantastic work they had produced linked to this theme, have a look at the posters they have made to help us all to look after our playground! Thank you Year 5! Our merit award this week will go to someone who is helping to improve the world around them.

A big thank you to Mrs Allen for the fantastic coffee morning!

Thursday 26th September 2013

Today Mrs Abbott and Miss Anslow brought some of the Nursery children on a 'little' visit to my office! They had such fun looking around at all the files, books, teddies and toys that keep me company!

Don't forget that tomorrow Mrs Allen and the toddler mums are hosting a coffee morning in support of the Macmillan charity. All welcome from approximately 9:00 till 10:30. Thursday 19th September 2013

Fact of the day...The Beatles 1966 hit ‘Yesterday’ has been covered more times than any other song ever written. However, the song’s original title was ‘Scrambled Eggs’, which doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Wednesday 18th September 2013

Don't forget the photographer will be in school this Friday 20th September, to take portrait photographs for Reception, KS1 and KS2. The photographer will return later in the year to take Nursery photographs when the children have settled in.  However, if you would like your Nursery child to be photographed with an older brother or sister in school, please bring them to the Infant Hall at 8.45 a.m.

Tuesday 17th September 2013

Early morning rise with our fantastic Breakfast Club! The children in Breakfast Club have had great fun this morning  playing lego, board games, reading, relaxing and of course eating a variety of breakfast snacks. Monday 16th September 2013

'Wet and wild' is the only way I can describe today!! Thank you to all the Year 1 and Year 2 parents who braved the weather to come in and meet their child's class teacher, I hope you found it very informative.

Friday 13th September 2013

Today has been Roald Dahl Day and Mrs Threlkeld popped into Y5 to listen to some very funny revolting rhymes this afternoon.  The children have had great fun writing them.  I have enjoyed chatting to parents at home time today and saying hello to some of our past pupils who looked very smart in their new  high school uniforms!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION- We have been experiencing technical difficulties today and have not been able to email the school newsletter as we usually do. The newsletter can be found via this website through the Newsletter tab on the side or you can nip into school on Monday for a paper copy. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Thursday 12th September 2013

I observed some lovely science work today in Y4, the children were really enjoying themselves, looking at, comparing and grouping animals.

When I popped into Y5, I was taken back in time! I observed Queen Victoria's Coronation!  This stimulated some fantastic newspaper reports of the event!

Wednesday 11th September 2013

What a wet and miserable day it is today, winter is defiantly on its way! On a walk around school this morning it was lovely to see all the children working so hard. As a whole school we have been looking at our handwriting style and how we can help the children begin to join their letters. It is early days but the children love it. When they can write with joins, consistently, the children will be able to have a pen and a pen licence!

Tuesday 10th September 2013

Today during a walk around school I enjoyed listening to Y5 take part in a guided reading session, they seemed to be really enjoying our new books!  Some of Y6 told me that they had great fun swimming, for the first time this year, they were really well behaved and a credit to our school. Foundation stage are settling in really well and we are loooking forward to having all our Reception children in full time as from tomorrow!

Monday 9th September 2013

We had a lovely assembly this morning partly delivered by Mr Pollard the Headteacher of Haydock High School. Mr Pollard talked to the children about choices and how important it was to choose the right secondary school! Mr Pollard brought along 3 past Grange Valley pupils Luke in Year 7, Daniel in Year 8 and Cara in Year 11. The pupils told our children all about 'life' at Haydock High!

Haydock are holding an open evening on Thursday 26th September, 5.30pm – 8.00pm to provide everyone with an opportunity to visit the school, meet the teaching staff & view activity showcases. Click on the Haydock High badge and follow the link for more information!

During assembly we also showcased our class charters. Each class have come up with a set of agreed rules, rewards and consequences. The class charters are displayed in all classes so we all know the rules to follow and the rewards we can expect when we are good! Our Class Charters are displayed below.

Friday 6th September 2013

Well, where has the week gone? It has been a great first week back and I'm so proud of all the children for settling back into school. The children have worked hard and deserve a restful weekend! I hope the weather doesn't spoil your weekend plans, I think I may get out my winter 'woolies'!!

On Monday we have a special assembly delivered by Mr Pollard the Headteacher of Haydock High School.

Thursday 5th September 2013

I've just had some 'little' visitors!

Wednesday 4th September 2013

A very warm welcome back to all our children and families and an extra big warm welcome to our new additions! It was lovely to see all the children this morning they looked so smart in their new uniforms. The children couldn’t wait to tell me all about their holiday adventures!

All children seemed to have settled in well to their new classes and love the changes that have happened during the summer holidays.

During the summer holiday Mrs Murphy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, who they have called Susanna. Welcome to the world and a huge congratulations from all at GV!

During assembly this morning we talked about how proud we all are of our lovely school. We likened our school to a lovely 'fruit summer pudding'! The building is like the bread that forms the outside of the pudding and the children, staff, governors and parents are the lovely different fruits that filled the centre. We decided that all 'Summer Puddings' needed sugar just like we need lots of love to share around in school, to make it the best place possible! We also decided that we are the BEST school in St Helens, because of the people in it!

Finally here is a sneak preview of our new website due to go live shortly...
